Nalanda (IAST: Nālandā; /naːlən̪d̪aː/) was an acclaimed Mahavihara, a large Buddhist monastery in the ancient kingdom of Magadha (modern-day Bihar) in India. The site is located about 95 kilometres southeast of Patna near the town of Bihar Sharif, and was a centre of learning from the fifth century CE to c. 1200 CE.
The highly formalized methods of Vedic learning helped inspire the establishment of large teaching institutions such as Taxila, Nalanda, and Vikramashila which are often characterised as India's early universities. Nalanda flourished under the patronage of the Gupta Empire in the 5th and 6th centuries and later under Harsha, the emperor of Kannauj. The liberal cultural traditions inherited from the Gupta age resulted in a period of growth and prosperity until the ninth century. The subsequent centuries were a time of gradual decline, a period during which the tantric developments of Buddhism became most pronounced in eastern India under the Pala Empire.
At its peak, the school attracted scholars and students from near and far with some travelling all the way from Tibet, China, Korea, and Central Asia. Archaeological evidence also notes contact with the Shailendra dynasty of Indonesia, one of whose kings built a monastery in the complex.
Located 55 miles from Patna in Bihar, Nalanda was the largest residential centre of learning in the world with a nine-storeyed library. The monasteries are built in old Kushan architectural style, in a row of cells around a courtyard. It was the Buddhist centre of learning from 427 to 1197 CE partly under the Pala Empire. It is believed that Buddha visited Nalanda during his last tour through Magadha, and it was there that Sariputta uttered his lion's roar, affirming his faith in the Buddha. University of Nalanda was established in 450 CE under the patronage of the Gupta emperors, notably Kumara Gupta. Nava Nalanda Mahavihara is devoted to the study and research in Pali Literature and Buddhism.

Nalanda was a huge Buddhist University and place of worship. Some people estimate that 10,000 students could be attending it. At it's peak it attracted people from far away as Tibet, China, Korea and Turkey. Then in 1200 AD the Monastery was destroyed by an army of Muslims. What makes Nalanda an interesting place is that only a few large universities existed before Nalanda was destroyed according to some historians. This would be Oxford in the UK, Al Azhar in Cairo and Bologna in Italy. Here is some video of Nalanda, and if you enjoyed this video plea...

Hoje eu tive medo
Sensível demais, você me deixou e agora
Como dominar as emoções?

Chamo por teu nome em transmissão de pensamento
Longe a tua casa, vejo a luz do quarto acesa
Não tem nada que não vaze, que segure essa represa
