Political scientists have long wondered whether civic participation can have spillover effects -- that is, whether civic participation in one particular domain of public life can lead to more participation in other areas. This book argues that participation can indeed be generative. New participants in participatory governance initiatives can acquire new skills, apply them to new areas of their lives, and join new organizations, even in very poor regions. The evidence is based on a large survey -- among the broadest in its class -- of participants in community-managed schools (CMS) in rural Honduras and Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, together with case studies and historical institutional analysis. This study is thus more optimistic about the promise of participation than other studies. While it recognizes that participatory arenas are often constrained by features of program design, local context, and national political problems, this book shows that participation is not a dead-end affair. Participation can breed new and unexpected forms of civicness, even in the most unlikely settings.

Political scientists have long wondered whether civic participation can have spillover effects -- that is, whether civic participation in one particular domain of public life can lead to more participation in other areas. This book argues that participation can indeed be generative. New participants in participatory governance initiatives can acquire new skills, apply them to new areas of their lives, and join new organizations, even in very poor regions. The evidence is based on a large survey -- among the broadest in its class -- of participants in community-managed schools (CMS) in rural Honduras and Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, together with case studies and historical institutional analysis. This study is thus more optimistic about the promise of participation than other studies. While it recognizes that participatory arenas are often constrained by features of program design, local context, and national political problems, this book shows that participation is not a dead-end affair. Participation can breed new and unexpected forms of civicness, even in the most unlikely settings.

A historic shift has occurred in the organizational structures through which the lower classes in Latin America express voice and find political representation. With the political and economic reforms of the 1980s and 1990s, networks of community-based associations and nongovernmental organizations replaced party-affiliated labor unions as the predominant organizations to which the lower classes turned. This volume examines the new interest regime in Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Venezuela through two extensive surveysone of individuals and one of associationsundertaken in those nations capital cities. Contrary to common perceptions, the new interest regime is neither a vibrant, autonomous civil society nor a set of weak, atomized organizations. Participation in associations is generally high, compared to direct action as a strategy for pursuing collective interests, and associations more frequently coordinate and engage the state than has sometimes been assumed. However, various forms of interaction with the state pose a classic trade-off between representation and state control, and the new interest regime is marked by representational distortion, in that the lower classes are less likely to use the new structures than the middle classes. Within these general patterns, distinct national models are emerging. This volume represents the most ambitious and systematic effort to date to examine individual participation and associational life in Latin America and to carry out a cross-national analysis of new forms of political representation.

The independent electronic platform USM, in collaboration with Greek artists, creates the project & digital music compilation “Electronic Seikilos”.
This project intends to promote Greek artists and feature the contemporary Greek electronic scene. USM aspires to highlight the research for electronic music, in an attempt to study and present sounds and melodies, composed by known- or not- artists. Simultaneously, this action will function as a stimulus for younger artists who want to come in touch with electronic music.
The first collection will be comprised by 12 tracks, by 12 Greek artists, and it will be accompanied by audiovisual material, documentary, workshops as well as interviews by the artists.
The name of the collection is inspired by the ancient Greek synthesis of the track “Seikilos epitaph”, which is saved till nowdays. It is an hymn whose lyrics suggest an exceptional stand towards life.
