Incredibly lovely, and talented Ida gives a serious lesson to those wonderful, but still wannabes, who would attempt to slap! No lady in filmdom, that I've witnessed, has ever even dared Ida's supreme slap scene as witnessed here. It's fun to sound like a Carnival Barker: Watch her as she slaps this miscreant 6 times in a row! OK, maybe Joan Crawford came close, and so did Olivia de Havilland. Still, you gotta love Ida's fervor here! Also, it's usually woman on woman violence. Here Ida does superbly at slapping a man!

Pianist Giovanni Guidi and trombonist Gianluca Petrella, key figures in what some are hailing as a “golden age” of Italian jazz, found their strong improvisational rapport inside Enrico Rava’s band (see for instance the 2010 ECM album Tribe) and, keen to play more, formed a duo, giving many concerts in which they are intermittently joined by guests. For this studio recording, producer Manfred Eicher brought the duo together with US drummer Gerald Cleaver and French clarinetist Louis Sclavis, for an outgoing set of music which includes lyrical free improvising and tunes composed by Giovanni and Gianluca. The piece called “Gato!” tips the hat to Mr Barbieri, and title track “Ida Lupino” serves double duty as a salute to composer Carla Bley in her 80th year (Petrella once played in a big band under Carla’s direction) and as a tribute to Paul Bley, who popularized the tune and influenced so many improvisers (not least Giovanni Guidi).

La grande nebbia (The Bigamist) è un film del 1953, diretto dalla regista statunitense Ida Lupino.
La grande nebbia è l'unico dei suoi sei film di cui Ida Lupino, una delle poche dive americane ad essere stata dietro la macchina da presa (una "vera pioniera" secondo la definizione di Martin Scorsese), è anche interprete. Fu girato con un budget molto ridotto, causa la cattiva situazione finanziaria della The Filmmakers, la casa produttrice fondata nel 1949 col secondo marito Collier Young - produttore del film e recente sposo dell'altra protagonista, Joan Fontaine - che aveva dovuto accettare le severe condizioni poste dalla RKO.
Nei suoi film Ida Lupino metteva in discussione "...il ruolo passivo, puramente decorativo della donna nelle produzioni hollywoodiane." In La grande nebbia, come per lo stupro di "La preda della belva", la violenza dei genitori in "Non abbandonarmi", la poliomielite della protagonista di "Never Fear", un trauma - nella forma della rivelazione della bigamia del marito - "...cala all'improvviso sulle protagoniste, sconvolgendo "... la loro vita ovattata e borghese...e costringendole ad affrontare dolore e disperazione".
Si trattava di temi decisamente "...senza precedenti nel cinema americano di allora, affrontati con "...chiarezza assoluta... con la stessa mescolanza di precisione e profonda compassione di cui aveva dato prova come attrice"
Trama
Nell'impossibilità di avere un figlio proprio, i coniugi Graham si rivolgono a Jordan, funzionario responsabile per le pratiche di adozione. Messo sull'avviso da alcuni atteggiamenti reticenti del marito, questi, durante una trasferta a Los Angeles, svolge delle indagini su Harry Graham, costretto dalla propria attività commerciale, a soggiornare di frequente nella città. E grande è la sua sorpresa nello scoprire che, col nome di Harrison, egli è sposato a Phyllis Martin, da cui ha avuto un figlio.
Messo alle strette, Harry gli narra delle circostanze che lo hanno portato alla bigamia. A seguito della notizia della sterilità della moglie Eve, i rapporti tra i due si erano fatti sempre più freddi e circoscritti alla comune attività lavorativa, cui la donna aveva rivolto con determinazione le proprie energie. Nel corso di una gita guidata a Hollywood, alla ricerca di un diversivo alla solitudine nella grande metropoli, Harry aveva conosciuto Phyllis. Durante le trasferte di Harry, la relazione fra i due si era rinsaldata, complice l'estraneità della moglie assorbita dagli affari. Poi, Eve, a seguito della morte del padre si era trasformata. Tornata ad essere affettuosa col marito, come nei primi tempi della loro unione, aveva espresso il desiderio di adottare un figlio, eventualità che in precedenza aveva sempre escluso. Così i due si erano rivolti a Jordan.
Di passaggio a Los Angeles, Harry aveva deciso di passare a salutare, per un'ultima volta Phyllis, scoprendo che era incinta di un figlio, concepito una sera in cui, insieme, avevano festeggiato il compleanno dell'uomo. Benché Phyllis, determinata a portare a termine la gravidanza, non avesse avanzato alcuna pretesa, lui, per dare un nome ed una sicurezza al figlio, aveva insistito perché si sposassero.
Jordan lascia la casa in preda a sentimenti contrastanti: dovrebbe denunciare l'uomo, ma al contempo prova per lui comprensione e solidarietà. È lo stesso Harry ad autodenunciarsi. La sentenza sarà mite, ma, in un finale aperto, mentre le due donne lasciano l'aula del tribunale, resta sospeso l'interrogativo del giudice: "Credo che l'imputato abbia realmente amato entrambe queste donne. Forse non avrebbe potuto fare a meno di nessuna delle due. E ho la dolorosa impressione che ormai le abbia perse entrambe..."

Ida Lupino
Ida Lupino (4 February 1918 – 3 August 1995) was an Anglo-American film actress, singer, director and producer, a pioneer among women filmmakers. In her forty-eight-year career, she appeared in fifty-nine films and directed seven others, mostly in the United States, where she became a citizen in 1948. She co-wrote and co-produced some of her own films as well. She appeared in serial television programmes fifty-eight times and directed fifty other episodes. Additionally, she contributed as a writer to five films and four TV episodes.
Early life and family
Lupino was born in Herne Hill, London, to actress Connie O'Shea (also known as Connie Emerald) and music hall entertainer Stanley Lupino, a member of the theatrical Lupino family. Lupino's birth year is 1918 and not 1914 as some biographies have claimed. Her sister, Rita (born 1920), became an actress and dancer.

Incredibly lovely, and talented Ida gives a serious lesson to those wonderful, but still wannabes, who would attempt to slap! No lady in filmdom, that I've witnessed, has ever even dared Ida's supreme slap scene as witnessed here. It's fun to sound like a Carnival Barker: Watch her as she slaps this miscreant 6 times in a row! OK, maybe Joan Crawford came close, and so did Olivia de Havilland. The piece called “Gato!” tips the hat to Mr Barbieri, and title track “Ida Lupino” serves double duty as a salute to composer Carla Bley in her 80th year (Petrella once played in a big band under Carla’s direction) and as a tribute to Paul Bley, who popularized the tune and influenced so many improvisers (not least Giovanni Guidi).

La grande nebbia è l'unico dei suoi sei film di cui Ida Lupino, una delle poche dive americane ad essere stata dietro la macchina da presa (una "vera pioniera" secondo la definizione di Martin Scorsese), è anche interprete. Fu girato con un budget molto ridotto, causa la cattiva situazione finanziaria della The Filmmakers, la casa produttrice fondata nel 1949 col secondo marito Collier Young - produttore del film e recente sposo dell'altra protagonista, Joan Fontaine - che aveva dovuto accettare le severe condizioni poste dalla RKO.
Nei suoi film Ida Lupino metteva in discussione "...il ruolo passivo, puramente decorativo della donna nelle produzioni hollywoodiane." In La grande nebbia, come per lo stupro di "La preda della belva", la violenza dei genitori in "Non abbandonarmi", la poliomielite della protagonista di "Never Fear", un trauma - nella forma della rivelazione della bigamia del marito - "...cala all'improvviso sulle protagoniste, sconvolgendo "... la loro vita ovattata e borghese...e costringendole ad affrontare dolore e disperazione".
Si trattava di temi decisamente "...senza precedenti nel cinema americano di allora, affrontati con "...chiarezza assoluta... con la stessa mescolanza di precisione e profonda compassione di cui aveva dato prova come attrice"
Trama
Nell'impossibilità di avere un figlio proprio, i coniugi Graham si rivolgono a Jordan, funzionario responsabile per le pratiche di adozione. Messo sull'avviso da alcuni atteggiamenti reticenti del marito, questi, durante una trasferta a Los Angeles, svolge delle indagini su Harry Graham, costretto dalla propria attività commerciale, a soggiornare di frequente nella città. E grande è la sua sorpresa nello scoprire che, col nome di Harrison, egli è sposato a Phyllis Martin, da cui ha avuto un figlio.
Messo alle strette, Harry gli narra delle circostanze che lo hanno portato alla bigamia. A seguito della notizia della sterilità della moglie Eve, i rapporti tra i due si erano fatti sempre più freddi e circoscritti alla comune attività lavorativa, cui la donna aveva rivolto con determinazione le proprie energie. Nel corso di una gita guidata a Hollywood, alla ricerca di un diversivo alla solitudine nella grande metropoli, Harry aveva conosciuto Phyllis. Durante le trasferte di Harry, la relazione fra i due si era rinsaldata, complice l'estraneità della moglie assorbita dagli affari. Poi, Eve, a seguito della morte del padre si era trasformata. Tornata ad essere affettuosa col marito, come nei primi tempi della loro unione, aveva espresso il desiderio di adottare un figlio, eventualità che in precedenza aveva sempre escluso. Così i due si erano rivolti a Jordan.
Di passaggio a Los Angeles, Harry aveva deciso di passare a salutare, per un'ultima volta Phyllis, scoprendo che era incinta di un figlio, concepito una sera in cui, insieme, avevano festeggiato il compleanno dell'uomo. Benché Phyllis, determinata a portare a termine la gravidanza, non avesse avanzato alcuna pretesa, lui, per dare un nome ed una sicurezza al figlio, aveva insistito perché si sposassero.
Jordan lascia la casa in preda a sentimenti contrastanti: dovrebbe denunciare l'uomo, ma al contempo prova per lui comprensione e solidarietà. È lo stesso Harry ad autodenunciarsi. La sentenza sarà mite, ma, in un finale aperto, mentre le due donne lasciano l'aula del tribunale, resta sospeso l'interrogativo del giudice: "Credo che l'imputato abbia realmente amato entrambe queste donne. Forse non avrebbe potuto fare a meno di nessuna delle due. E ho la dolorosa impressione che ormai le abbia perse entrambe..."

La grande nebbia (The Bigamist) è un film del 1953, diretto dalla regista statunitense Ida Lupino.
La grande nebbia è l'unico dei suoi sei film di cui Ida Lupino, una delle poche dive americane ad essere stata dietro la macchina da presa (una "vera pioniera" secondo la definizione di Martin Scorsese), è anche interprete. Fu girato con un budget molto ridotto, causa la cattiva situazione finanziaria della The Filmmakers, la casa produttrice fondata nel 1949 col secondo marito Collier Young - produttore del film e recente sposo dell'altra protagonista, Joan Fontaine - che aveva dovuto accettare le severe condizioni poste dalla RKO.
Nei suoi film Ida Lupino metteva in discussione "...il ruolo passivo, puramente decorativo della donna nelle produzioni hollywoodiane." In La grande nebbia, come per lo stupro di "La preda della belva", la violenza dei genitori in "Non abbandonarmi", la poliomielite della protagonista di "Never Fear", un trauma - nella forma della rivelazione della bigamia del marito - "...cala all'improvviso sulle protagoniste, sconvolgendo "... la loro vita ovattata e borghese...e costringendole ad affrontare dolore e disperazione".
Si trattava di temi decisamente "...senza precedenti nel cinema americano di allora, affrontati con "...chiarezza assoluta... con la stessa mescolanza di precisione e profonda compassione di cui aveva dato prova come attrice"
Trama
Nell'impossibilità di avere un figlio proprio, i coniugi Graham si rivolgono a Jordan, funzionario responsabile per le pratiche di adozione. Messo sull'avviso da alcuni atteggiamenti reticenti del marito, questi, durante una trasferta a Los Angeles, svolge delle indagini su Harry Graham, costretto dalla propria attività commerciale, a soggiornare di frequente nella città. E grande è la sua sorpresa nello scoprire che, col nome di Harrison, egli è sposato a Phyllis Martin, da cui ha avuto un figlio.
Messo alle strette, Harry gli narra delle circostanze che lo hanno portato alla bigamia. A seguito della notizia della sterilità della moglie Eve, i rapporti tra i due si erano fatti sempre più freddi e circoscritti alla comune attività lavorativa, cui la donna aveva rivolto con determinazione le proprie energie. Nel corso di una gita guidata a Hollywood, alla ricerca di un diversivo alla solitudine nella grande metropoli, Harry aveva conosciuto Phyllis. La sentenza sarà mite, ma, in un finale aperto, mentre le due donne lasciano l'aula del tribunale, resta sospeso l'interrogativo del giudice: "Credo che l'imputato abbia realmente amato entrambe queste donne. La grande nebbia (The Bigamist) è un film del 1953, diretto dalla regista statunitense Ida Lupino.
La grande nebbia è l'unico dei suoi sei film di cui Ida Lupino, una delle poche dive americane ad essere stata dietro la macchina da presa (una "vera pioniera" secondo la definizione di Martin Scorsese), è anche interprete. Fu girato con un budget molto ridotto, causa la cattiva situazione finanziaria della The Filmmakers, la casa produttrice fondata nel 1949 col secondo marito Collier Young - produttore del film e recente sposo dell'altra protagonista, Joan Fontaine - che aveva dovuto accettare le severe condizioni poste dalla RKO.
Nei suoi film Ida Lupino metteva in discussione "...il ruolo passivo, puramente decorativo della donna nelle produzioni hollywoodiane." In La grande nebbia, come per lo stupro di "La preda della belva", la violenza dei genitori in "Non abbandonarmi", la poliomielite della protagonista di "Never Fear", un trauma - nella forma della rivelazione della bigamia del marito - "...cala all'improvviso sulle protagoniste, sconvolgendo "... la loro vita ovattata e borghese...e costringendole ad affrontare dolore e disperazione".
Si trattava di temi decisamente "...senza precedenti nel cinema americano di allora, affrontati con "...chiarezza assoluta... con la stessa mescolanza di precisione e profonda compassione di cui aveva dato prova come attrice"
Trama
Nell'impossibilità di avere un figlio proprio, i coniugi Graham si rivolgono a Jordan, funzionario responsabile per le pratiche di adozione. Messo sull'avviso da alcuni atteggiamenti reticenti del marito, questi, durante una trasferta a Los Angeles, svolge delle indagini su Harry Graham, costretto dalla propria attività commerciale, a soggiornare di frequente nella città. E grande è la sua sorpresa nello scoprire che, col nome di Harrison, egli è sposato a Phyllis Martin, da cui ha avuto un figlio.
Messo alle strette, Harry gli narra delle circostanze che lo hanno portato alla bigamia. A seguito della notizia della sterilità della moglie Eve, i rapporti tra i due si erano fatti sempre più freddi e circoscritti alla comune attività lavorativa, cui la donna aveva rivolto con determinazione le proprie energie. Nel corso di una gita guidata a Hollywood, alla ricerca di un diversivo alla solitudine nella grande metropoli, Harry aveva conosciuto Phyllis.
