On October, 21, 2015, Scott Aaronson delivered his IST Lecture on “Computational Complexity and Fundamental Physics” in the Raiffeisen Lecture Hall. He is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received various awards in the past, including the Alan T. Waterman Award of the National Science Foundation. He talked about how computational complexity theory provided us new insights into the nature of physical law. With his primary research interest in quantum computing and computational complexity theory, he gave his personal view of quantum computing's key ideas, status, and prospects, placing the attempt to build practical quantum computers in the broader context of the quest to understand the ultimate physical limits of computation.

In the near future, it will likely become possible to perform special-purpose quantum computations that, while not immediately useful for anything, are plausibly hard to simulate using a classical computer. These "quantum supremacy experiments" would be a scientific milestone---decisively answering quantum computing skeptics, while casting doubt on one of the foundational tenets of computer science, the Extended Church-Turing Thesis. At the same time, these experiments also raise fascinating questions for computational complexity theorists: for example, on what grounds should we believe that a given quantum system really is hard to simulate classically?
Does classical simulation become easier as a quantum system becomes noisier? and how do we verify the results of such an experiment? In this lecture, I'll discuss recent results and open problems about these questions, using three proposed "quantum supremacy experiments" as examples: BosonSampling, IQP / commuting Hamiltonians, and random quantum circuits.

Scott Aaronson, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, delivered his inaugural lecture entitled "Quantum Computing and the Limits of the Efficiently Computable".
Mr Aaronson discusses what can and can't be feasibly computed according to physical law. He argues that this is a fundamental question, not only for mathematics and computer science, but also for physics; and that the infeasibility of certain computational problems (such as NP-complete problems) could plausibly be taken as a physical principle, analogous to the Second Law or the impossibility of superluminal signalling.
He first explains the basics of computational complexity, including the infamous P versus NP problem and the Extended Church-Turing Thesis. Then he discusses quantum computers: what they are, whether they can be scalably built, and what's known today about their capabilities and limitations. Lastly, he touches on speculative models of computation that would go even beyond quantum computers, using (for example) closed timelike curves or nonlinearities in the Schrodinger equation.
Mr Aaronson emphasises that, even if "intractable" computations occur in a particular description of a physical system, what really matters is whether those computations have observable consequences.

He received his PhD in computer science from University of California, Berkeley and did postdocs at the Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Waterloo.

In the near future, it will likely become possible to perform special-purpose quantum computations that, while not immediately useful for anything, are plausibly hard to simulate using a classical computer. These "quantum supremacy experiments" would be a scientific milestone---decisively answering quantum computing skeptics, while casting doubt on one of the foundational tenets of computer science, the Extended Church-Turing Thesis. At the same time, these experiments also raise fascinating questions for computational complexity theorists: for example, on what grounds should we believe that a given quantum system really is hard to simulate classically?
Does classical simulation become easier as a quantum system becomes noisier? and how do we verify the results of such an experiment? In this lecture, I'll discuss recent results and open problems about these questions, using three proposed "quantum supremacy experiments" as examples: BosonSampling, IQP / commuting Hamiltonians, and random quantum circuits.
