The Battle of the Bulge was Hitler’s final throw of the dice. With Germany in retreat across all fronts and a worsening situation at home, Hitler hoped to force the Western Allies out of the war before turning his full attention to the Soviet Union. Just as they had done in 1940, German tanks were to smash through Allied lines in the Ardennes forest and head for the coast, in this case, the vital Allied port of Antwerp. Germany amassed over 300,000 men, 2,100 tanks and assault guns, and around 1,900 artillery pieces for an attack on just 80,000 unprepared American soldiers.
But it wasn't 1940 anymore and the circumstances surrounding this attack were completely different. Even the men who planned the offensive didn't believe it would work. To succeed it required complete surprise, poor weather, a rapid advance, and the capture of Allied fuel to facilitate it all. Without any one of those things the entire plan could all fall apart.
The attack began at 5:30 am on 16 December 1944, but problems quickly emerged. Dogged American resistance slowed up the German advance allowing Allied reinforcements to flow in. Though there were only 80,000 Allied troops in the Ardennes at the start of the battle, there were over 500,000 by Christmas eve. By then the poor weather had started to clear and the Allies were able to play their trump card, destroying the German forces from the air. German forces did create a bulge in the Allied line, from which the battle gets its name, but by the end of January that bulge was closed.
In the end, the Ardennes Offensive shorted the war and essentially ended Germany’s ability to resist both in both the east and west. When the Soviets launched their winter offensive in January, they swept aside German resistance and advance 300 miles closer to Germany in a matter of weeks. Two months later, the Allies would do the same crossing the Rhine into Germany itself. Soon the war in Europe would be over.

Bulge (astronomy)
In astronomy, a bulge is a tightly packed group of stars within a larger formation. The term almost exclusively refers to the central group of stars found in most spiral galaxies (see galactic spheroid). Bulges were historically thought to be elliptical galaxies that happened to have a disk of stars around them, but high-resolution images using the Hubble Space Telescope have revealed that many bulges lie at the heart of a spiral galaxy. It is now thought that there are at least two types of bulges: bulges that are like ellipticals and bulges that are like spiral galaxies.
Classical bulges
Bulges that have properties similar to those of elliptical galaxies are often called classical bulges due to their similarity to the historic view of bulges. These bulges are composed primarily of stars that are older, Population II stars, and hence have a reddish hue (see stellar evolution). These stars are also in orbits that are essentially random compared to the plane of the galaxy, giving the bulge a distinct spherical form. Due to the lack of dust and gasses, bulges tend to have almost no star formation. The distribution of light is described by de Vaucouleurs' law.

Equatorial bulge
An equatorial bulge is a difference between the equatorial and polar diameters of a planet, due to the centrifugal force of its rotation. A rotating body tends to form an oblate spheroid rather than a sphere. The Earth has an equatorial bulge of 42.77 km (26.58 mi): that is, its diameter measured across the equatorial plane (12,756.27 km (7,926.38 mi)) is 42.77 km more than that measured between the poles (12,713.56 km (7,899.84 mi)). An observer standing at sea level on either pole, therefore, is 21.36 km closer to Earth's centrepoint than if standing at sea level on the equator. The value of Earth's radius may be approximated by the average of these radii.
An often-cited result of Earth's equatorial bulge is that the highest point on Earth, measured from the center outwards, is the peak of Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador, rather than Mount Everest. But since the ocean, like the Earth and the atmosphere, bulges, Chimborazo is not as high above sea level as Everest is.

Doctors is a British medical soap opera which first broadcast in the United Kingdom on BBC One on 26 March 2000. Set in the fictional Midlands town of Letherbridge, defined as being in the city of Birmingham, the soap follows the staff of a doctor's surgery, and their families.
History
Doctors is produced by BBC Birmingham and is screened on BBC One, with the first episode broadcast on 26 March 2000. It was created by Chris Murray, with Mal Young developing it and Carson Black the original producer. The show has been shown at lunchtime since its inception, originally at 12.30pm as a lead-in to the BBC's One O'Clock News. After it was temporarily moved to allow for extended news coverage of the 11 September 2001 attacks, its regular slot changed to 2:10 pm, following directly after Neighbours, after ratings rose to a 25% audience share. When the BBC lost Neighbours to Channel 5 in January 2008, it moved into the Australian soap's old slot of 1:45pm. For a brief trial period in Summer 2000, selected episodes from the first series were shown on Fridays at 7 pm and from 16 February 2009, the show began transmitting in high definition on BBC HD at 4:00pm the same day.

In the end, the Ardennes Offensive shorted the war and essentially ended Germany’s ability to resist both in both the east and west. When the Soviets launched their winter offensive in January, they swept aside German resistance and advance 300 miles closer to Germany in a matter of weeks. Two months later, the Allies would do the same crossing the Rhine into Germany itself. Soon the war in Europe would be over.

Hubble solves the mystery bulge at the center of the Milky Way Our supermassive black hole has been on a diet for millions of years… but when did it last splurge? The Milky Way appears as a relatively flat structure when viewed along its plane in visible light. Gamma-ray emission, however, paints a different picture: two huge structures billowing outward from the galaxy’s bulge like an enormous hourglass. Named the Fermi Bubbles, these structures are the result of the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole gorging itself on interstellar gas in the past. Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), astronomers have now determined just when these structured formed.

Teach Astronomy - Galactic Bulge
http://www.teachastronomy.com/ The third component of the Milky Way is the bulge of our galaxy. This concentration of stars is centered on the galactic center but is much smaller than the halo. The stars in the bulge are mostly old and red, but many are younger than the halo stars with ages of only a few billion years. The bulge is best seen with infrared observations that can penetrate the obscuring dust that lies in the plane of the disk of our galaxy.

The Milky Way appears as a relatively flat structure when viewed along its plane in visible light. Gamma-ray emission, however, paints a different picture: two huge structures billowing outward from the galaxy’s bulge like an enormous hourglass. Named the Fermi Bubbles, these structures are the result of the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole gorging itself on interstellar gas in the past. The Battle of the Bulge was Hitler’s final throw of the dice. With Germany in retreat across all fronts and a worsening situation at home, Hitler hoped to force the Western Allies out of the war before turning his full attention to the Soviet Union. Just as they had done in 1940, German tanks were to smash through Allied lines in the Ardennes forest and head for the coast, in this case, the vital Allied port of Antwerp. Germany amassed over 300,000 men, 2,100 tanks and assault guns, and around 1,900 artillery pieces for an attack on just 80,000 unprepared American soldiers.
But it wasn't 1940 anymore and the circumstances surrounding this attack were completely different. Even the men who planned the offensive didn't believe it would work. To succeed it required complete surprise, poor weather, a rapid advance, and the capture of Allied fuel to facilitate it all. Without any one of those things the entire plan could all fall apart.
The attack began at 5:30 am on 16 December 1944, but problems quickly emerged. Dogged American resistance slowed up the German advance allowing Allied reinforcements to flow in. Though there were only 80,000 Allied troops in the Ardennes at the start of the battle, there were over 500,000 by Christmas eve. By then the poor weather had started to clear and the Allies were able to play their trump card, destroying the German forces from the air. German forces did create a bulge in the Allied line, from which the battle gets its name, but by the end of January that bulge was closed.
In the end, the Ardennes Offensive shorted the war and essentially ended Germany’s ability to resist both in both the east and west. When the Soviets launched their winter offensive in January, they swept aside German resistance and advance 300 miles closer to Germany in a matter of weeks. Two months later, the Allies would do the same crossing the Rhine into Germany itself. Soon the war in Europe would be over.

Our supermassive black hole has been on a diet for millions of years… but when did it last splurge?
The Milky Way appears as a relatively flat structure when viewed along its plane in visible light. Gamma-ray emission, however, paints a different picture: two huge structures billowing outward from the galaxy’s bulge like an enormous hourglass. Named the Fermi Bubbles, these structures are the result of the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole gorging itself on interstellar gas in the past. Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), astronomers have now determined just when these structured formed.

In astronomy, a bulge is a tightly packed group of stars within a larger formation. The term almost exclusively refers to the central group of stars found in most spiral galaxies (see galactic spheroid). Bulges were historically thought to be elliptical galaxies that happened to have a disk of stars around them, but high-resolution images using the Hubble Space Telescope have revealed that many bulges lie at the heart of a spiral galaxy. It is now thought that there are at least two types of bulges: bulges that are like ellipticals and bulges that are like spiral galaxies.
