Mitchell Parish (July 10, 1900 – March 31, 1993) was an American lyricist.
Parish was born Michael Hyman Pashelinsky to a Jewish family in Lithuania. His family emigrated to the United States, arriving on February 3, 1901 on the SS Dresden when he was less than a year old. They settled first in Louisiana where his paternal grandmother had relatives, but later moved to New York City.
By the late 1920s Parish was a well-regarded Tin Pan Alley lyricist in New York City.
His best-known works include the lyrics to songs such as "Star Dust," "Sweet Lorraine," "Deep Purple," "Stars Fell on Alabama," "Sophisticated Lady," the translation to English lyrics of "Volare," "Moonlight Serenade," "Mr. Ghost Goes to Town," "Sleigh Ride," "One Morning in May," and "Louisiana Fairy Tale," which was the first theme song used in the PBS Production of This Old House.
Besides providing the lyrics to Hoagy Carmichael's "Star Dust," the two collaborated on standards such as "Riverboat Shuffle" and "One Morning in May."

"Stairway to the Stars" is a popular song composed and written in 1934 by Matty Malneck and Frank Signorelli, with lyrics by Mitchell Parish. "At Mister Kelly's" is a 1957 live album by American jazz singer Sarah Vaughan, recorded at Mister Kelly's jazz club in Chicago. The Allmusic review by John Bush awarded the album four and a half stars and said that At Mister Kelly's captures Vaughan at her "best and most relaxed", stating that "her unerring sense of rhythm carries her through every song on this set, whether the occasion calls for playfulness and wit ("Thou Swell," "Honeysuckle Rose") or a world-wise melancholia ("Willow Weep for Me")". Bush also praises Jimmy Jones and Roy Haynes. Sarah's accompanied by Jimmy Jones (piano), Richard Davis (bass) & Roy Haynes (drums). Recorded in C...

So near, yet we're so far apart, Here I'll stand till I have won her heart; Go to my loved one, SERENATA, and say: "When you're in love, love finds a way." Tin Pan Alley lyricist Mitchell Parish is best-remembered for adding words to popular tunes originally marketed as instrumentals (Star Dust, Moonlight Serenade, Sophisticated Lady, etc.). I tied on my boots and strapped on my bracelet
to go out and meet some new faces.
Went to the store to buy some dark gin,
and now I know my night's ready to begin.
A dozen friends in my big 'ol car,
my '62 Buick can't take us too far.
Out for the night, it'll be so rude,
gotta hold us down before the night is through.
In Grand Rapids, there's nothing to do.
When you're down it's the same way too.
Gotta get up, do the best that you can.
To be a fool, is to be a man.
Well I went to the party with the big 'ol keg.
They said the way I drank, they thought I had a hollow leg.
Standing around, starting to groove,
with my beer in hand I think I'll plot my next move.
I spot a pretty girl giving me a wink
trying to catch my eye, or so I think.
Such a fool I am, should not have overlooked
that her eyes were only clouded by the smoke.
Well I went to Denny's to buy me some food,
said it's the only place that can put me in the mood.
I order my fries and always complain,
but the way they taste I think I'd rather eat them plain.
But I'm still with my friends, still having fun
talking shit while the night is still young.
But I bet they watch me drink as much as I'm able,
I know they'll laugh when they find me passed out on the table.
