This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Jim talks about his vision of transformation for development, drawing on his personal experience as an activist and an AIDs researcher. He shares why ending poverty is possible in our lifetimes and concludes that the poor will not always be with us.
Jim Yong Kim, M.D., Ph.D. is the President of the World Bank Group. Soon after he became president in July 2012, the organization established two goals: ending extreme poverty
by 2030 and boosting shared prosperity for the bottom 40 percent of the population in developing countries. Kim’s career has been focused on health, education, and delivering services to the poor. Before joining the World Bank, he served as Presi- dent of Dartmouth College and held professorships at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. From 2003–2005, as Director of the World Health Organization’s HIV/AIDS Department, he led the “3 by 5” initiative, the first-ev- er global goal for AIDS treatment, which helped to expand AIDS treatment in developing countries. In 1987, Kim co-founded Partners In Health, a non-profit medical organization now working in poor communities on four continents. Trained as
a physician and an anthropologist, he has received several awards, including a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, and rec- ognitions such as one of America’s “25 Best Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report, and in 2006 TIME magazine named him as one of its “100 Most Influential People in the World.”

Britain's exit from the European Union has led to "economic uncertainty which is not good but India seems to be doing quite well," World Bank President Jim Yong Kim has told NDTV in his first comments since Brexit.
In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Dr Kim, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier today in Delhi, said he was concerned by the uncertainty in the world economy. "The uncertainty has led to fluctuations in currency, we see that UK has been downgraded two notches by one of the ratings agencies and this is very serious...to go down two notches at the same time. I am concerned, but unfortunately, right now we don't know which direction it's going to go."
He also cautioned countries on turning "inward", saying multilateralism is critical. "Multilateralism is one of the great hopes for peace and prosperity. If you want to tackle inequality, you cannot have closed borders," he said.
Dr Kim, however, held out hope for India, predicting "slightly higher growth" next year. He said: "India seems to be doing quite well. India has been growing rapidly. Its connections to UK is of course very strong but economically there was a one-day blip in the stock market but then now things have now seemed to calmed down. So it is good news for India."
Asked on GDP numbers, which some economists have questioned, Dr Kim said: "We are as close to these numbers as anyone and this is not an exact science, and there is no physics in this. There are many people who question China's growth numbers. There are many people who question everybody's growth numbers. This is not a mathematical, scientific, exact snapshot. It is taking many indicators and then in a consistent way doing the best we can to make an estimate."
On the exit of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Chief Raghuram Rajan, the World Bank Chief said he did not believe it would impact India's policy. "I think both Raghu and PM Modi and the government have been communicating very effectively about it. He was a great central bank governor, tremendously respected. Respected as an academic before he came to Reserve Bank and then respected in how clearly he communicated in the things that he did. What I have heard from talking to PM Modi and members of his team is there is not going to be much of a change. They are going to continue to have independent central bank governor, an independent central bank...and the policies that have led to good outcomes so far economically will continue."
The World Bank Chief had huge praise for the prime minister as he said: "PM Modi has set some incredibly difficult targets for his team and what I have seen is that along with us there is just an all-out effort to reach those targets. A couple of examples, the cleaning up of the Ganga, this is a huge project and they are moving much faster than I thought they ever would be able to. Swachh Bharat is one of the most important programs for India, not just for sanitation but for the health of young children for example, that's moving much more quickly than we had ever thought."

Jim Yong Kim
Jim Yong Kim MD, PhD, also known as Kim Yong (Hangul: 김용; born December 8, 1959), is a South Korean and American physician and anthropologist who has served as the 12th President of the World Bank since July 1, 2012.
A global health leader, he was formerly the Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a co-founder and executive director of Partners In Health before serving as the President of Dartmouth College from 2009 to 2012, becoming the first Asian American president of an Ivy League institution.
Kim was named the world's 50th most powerful person by Forbes Magazine's List of The World's Most Powerful People in 2013.
Background
Born in Seoul, South Korea in 1959, Jim Yong Kim immigrated with his family to the U.S. at the age of five and grew up in Muscatine, Iowa. His father taught dentistry at the University of Iowa, while his mother received her PhD in philosophy. Kim attended Muscatine High School, where he was valedictorian, president of his class, and played both quarterback for the football team and point guard on the basketball team. After a year and a half at the University of Iowa, he transferred to Brown University, where he graduated magna cum laude with an A.B. in human biology in 1982. He was awarded an M.D. at Harvard Medical School in 1991, and a PhD in anthropology at Harvard University in 1993. He was among the first enrollees of Harvard's experimental MD/PhD program in the social sciences.

Jim Yong Kim, M.D., Ph.D. is the President of the World Bank Group. Soon after he became president in July 2012, the organization established two goals: ending extreme poverty
by 2030 and boosting shared prosperity for the bottom 40 percent of the population in developing countries. Kim’s career has been focused on health, education, and delivering services to the poor. Before joining the World Bank, he served as Presi- dent of Dartmouth College and held professorships at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. From 2003–2005, as Director of the World Health Organization’s HIV/AIDS Department, he led the “3 by 5” initiative, the first-ev- er global goal for AIDS treatment, which helped to expand AIDS treatment in developing countries. In 1987, Kim co-founded Partners In Health, a non-profit medical organization now working in poor communities on four continents. Trained as
a physician and an anthropologist, he has received several awards, including a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, and rec- ognitions such as one of America’s “25 Best Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report, and in 2006 TIME magazine named him as one of its “100 Most Influential People in the World.”

Britain's exit from the European Union has led to "economic uncertainty which is not good but India seems to be doing quite well," World Bank President Jim Yong Kim has told NDTV in his first comments since Brexit.
In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Dr Kim, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier today in Delhi, said he was concerned by the uncertainty in the world economy. "The uncertainty has led to fluctuations in currency, we see that UK has been downgraded two notches by one of the ratings agencies and this is very serious...to go down two notches at the same time. I am concerned, but unfortunately, right now we don't know which direction it's going to go."
He also cautioned countries on turning "inward", saying multilateralism is critical. "Multilateralism is one of the great hopes for peace and prosperity. If you want to tackle inequality, you cannot have closed borders," he said.
Dr Kim, however, held out hope for India, predicting "slightly higher growth" next year. He said: "India seems to be doing quite well. India has been growing rapidly. Its connections to UK is of course very strong but economically there was a one-day blip in the stock market but then now things have now seemed to calmed down. So it is good news for India."
Asked on GDP numbers, which some economists have questioned, Dr Kim said: "We are as close to these numbers as anyone and this is not an exact science, and there is no physics in this. There are many people who question China's growth numbers. There are many people who question everybody's growth numbers. This is not a mathematical, scientific, exact snapshot. It is taking many indicators and then in a consistent way doing the best we can to make an estimate."
On the exit of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Chief Raghuram Rajan, the World Bank Chief said he did not believe it would impact India's policy. "I think both Raghu and PM Modi and the government have been communicating very effectively about it. He was a great central bank governor, tremendously respected. Respected as an academic before he came to Reserve Bank and then respected in how clearly he communicated in the things that he did. What I have heard from talking to PM Modi and members of his team is there is not going to be much of a change. They are going to continue to have independent central bank governor, an independent central bank...and the policies that have led to good outcomes so far economically will continue."
The World Bank Chief had huge praise for the prime minister as he said: "PM Modi has set some incredibly difficult targets for his team and what I have seen is that along with us there is just an all-out effort to reach those targets. A couple of examples, the cleaning up of the Ganga, this is a huge project and they are moving much faster than I thought they ever would be able to. Swachh Bharat is one of the most important programs for India, not just for sanitation but for the health of young children for example, that's moving much more quickly than we had ever thought."

This was an amazing interview.Jim Yong Kim is the president of the World Bank — the massive, multilateral institution dedicated to eradicating poverty. But Kim is also a public-health legend: he was a co-founder of Partners in Health, which revolutionized how we treat the world's poor. He's won a MacArthur Genius award, chaired the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, led Dartmouth University, and been named one of the 50 most powerful people in the world by Forbes Magazine.It's a pretty solid resume. But solid resumes don't make for great conversations, and this was, to my delight, a truly great conversation. Kim talks in detail about the alienation he felt growing up Asian in America in the 1970s, his activism in college as he worked to find his own identity, the surprising lessons he learned when he returned to South Korea to reconnect with his roots, his genuinely world-changing partnership with Paul Farmer, how he's from being a doctor treating the world's poorest patients directly to the manager of a 15,000-person organization, and much more.

Earlier today, World Bank Group President Dr. Jim Yong Kim delivered a highly inspiring and activating first Joep Lange Institute lecture about tackling the global health challenges of our time. After referencing the feats of activists like Joep Lange, Kim deliberately focused his attention on the activists of the future, confronting the audience with the ‘fierce urgency of now.’
On 5 July,, World Bank Group President Dr. Jim Yong Kim delivered a highly inspiring and activating first Joep Lange Institute lecture about tackling the global health challenges of our time. After referencing the feats of activists like Joep Lange, Kim deliberately focused his attention on the activists of the future, confronting the audience with the ‘fierce urgency of now.’
During each event the Institute will bring together arts and science. Blending the two helps to see the world differently and spark innovation and an open mind. For this first lecture Heleen Blanken created a video projection for the guests. And, Nederlands Dans Theater 2 performed Schubert, a beautiful and moving ballet choreographed by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot. The event was hosted by Tracy Metz.
The Joep Lange Institute is an activist institute, inspired by the life and work of Joep Lange. We combine science, activism and pragmatism to reach our goal: making health markets work for the poor in countries where the system fails the people. The Institute believes that tackling the global health threats of our time requires a disruptive approach in order to come up with new answers, initiate solutions and advocate policy change.
