Wide of people sitting on benches STORYLINE: Residents of a small Portuguese town at the centre of the search for a missing British girl spoke of their frustrations over the case on Friday, a day before the first anniversary of Madeleine McCann's disappearance. Madeleine was a few days short of turning four when she went missing during a family vacation to Praia da Luz on 3 May, 2007. One British resident of Praia da Luz told AP Television on Friday that residents of the southern Algarve resort were "very tired" of the case. "Very tired of the media, too much media. The story is very sad, but why are you here because of the one year, why? We cannot be interested in it forever," the man added. The case drew enormous interest, first in Britain and Portugal, then around the world - a product of the McCanns' dogged determination to keep the case in the public eye, the voraciousness of the British tabloid press and a twist that saw the parents named as formal suspects in her disappearance. They deny any wrongdoing, and the investigation remains open. Another man, referring to Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann, said "it's enough, if they can't find (her), why do they have to keep searching?" On Thursday, the McCanns began a new phase of their search for Madeleine with the launch of an international telephone hotline that they hope will produce new information about her whereabouts. The couple have helped produced a documentary and are conducting press and television interviews as part of a new media offensive being launched to mark one year since Madeleine disappeared. Despite Madeleine's disappearance, British tourists still appeared to be visiting the resort. "We're thinking it's probably just a one off. Horrible thing to happen but hopefully it's not going to happen again," one British mother told AP Television during a holiday to Praia da Luz. Church services will be held on Saturday in Britain and in the Portuguese beach-side resort to mark the first anniversary. Meanwhile, public interest in Madeleine's disappearance shows no signs of ebbing. Detectives are still working on the case, and a man who lives near the Praia da Luz hotel where she vanished is a formal suspect along with the McCanns. He also has strenuously denied involvement. Police declined to speak about their investigation, saying it is confidential.
