2012 State Fair Of Texas - A Tour
State Fair Of Texas, 2012. This is a quick highlight tour of the fair. It's so large that it takes several days to explore everything it has to offer - I've touched on the big attractions yearly, the Auto Show, famous creative fried food, interesting animals, Midway rides and of course the ferris wheel (biggest in US) and Big Tex. There is an awesome robot show with a robot called Hank at the auto show this year, built by Ford - there's some cool footage of him in the video. The State Fair of Texas is the largest fair in the US, with about 3 million attendees yearly. It features the 52 foot tall Big Tex and the tallest (212 feet) ferris wheel in North America. The annual Red River Shoot Out football game between Texas and Oklahoma is held at the Cotton Bowl within the fairgrounds. The State Fair of Texas is an annual state fair held in Dallas, Texas (USA). Its season usually begins the last Friday in September and ends 24 days later. The State Fair Of Texas was originally charted as a private corporation by local businessmen. It was an immediate success and attracted thousands of people. However, in 1904 a series of unfortunate events led to a financial crisis and not enough income was coming in to keep the fair up and running. Therefore, the businessmen sold it to the city of Dallas with the agreement that 24 days during the fall would be set aside annually for the fair and exhibition. It is held at the historic Fair Park where it has been held since 1886. The 2012 State ...

Whoppers _ ThingsThatTurn
This is a box of Whoppers candy rotating slowly. In 1939, the Overland Candy Company introduced the predecessor to Whoppers, a malted milk candy called Giants. Overland merged with Chicago Biscuit Company, Leaf Gum, and Leaf Machinery, in 1947. Two years later, Leaf Brands reintroduced malted milk balls under the name of Whoppers. All products manufactured by Leaf Brands were purchased by WR Grace in the 1960s; however, they were repurchased by Leaf in 1976. Finally, Hershey Foods Corporation acquired the Leaf North America confectionery operations from Huhtamaki Oy of Helsinki, Finland in 1996. The company produces the Whoppers candy to this day. Whoppers were first sold unwrapped, two for one cent. But after the creation of cellophane wrapping machines, smaller Whoppers were packaged and sold five for one cent, also known as Fivesomes. Leaf soon introduced the first confectionery milk carton package which would become a hallmark of the candy. Sometime between 1949 and 1952 an egg-shaped Whoppers candy was introduced for Easter. They differ from the traditional Whoppers in being egg shaped and having a speckled candy shell. In 2000, Hershey introduced Mini Whoppers. Traditionally chocolate in flavor, a new strawberry milkshake flavored variant became available in 2006, soon after they also released Reese's Peanut Butter Cup flavored Whoppers.

WWYW #31: The Future of the WPEA; Food Safety Whistleblower Kenneth Kendrick
During the last session of the 2009-2010 Congress, an undemocratic senatorial process known as a "secret hold" -- a procedure that allows a lone senator to anonymously block legislation -- was used to kill the popular Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act (WPEA). In response to this action, GAP has worked with the NPR show On The Media to identify the senator who placed the secret hold, as well as to quickly reintroduce the legislation in Congress. This panel discusses exactly what happened to the bill, the campaign to find the secret senator, and how the WPEA would help to root out waste and benefit taxpayers by empowering whistleblowers to report fraud. Guests include: Tom Devine, Legal Director at the Government Accountability Project Pete Sepp, Executive Vice President of the National Taxpayers Union The interview segment features a highlight from our recent conference, Employee Rights and the Food Safety Modernization Act. Food safety whistleblower Kenneth Kendrick details his experience as a former Peanut Corporation of America assistant manager, when he tried to raise awareness about unsanitary conditions at a PCA plant months before the 2009 Salmonella/peanut butter outbreak was traced back to the company.
