Serenade to Music is a work by Ralph Vaughan Williams for 16 vocal soloists and orchestra, composed in 1938. The text is an adaptation of the discussion about music and the music of the spheres in Act V, Scene 1 of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.
Vaughan Williams wrote the piece as a tribute to the conductor Sir Henry Wood to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Wood's first concert. The solo parts were composed specifically for the voices of sixteen eminent British singers chosen by Wood and the composer. In some parts of the work, the soloists sing together as a "choir," sometimes in as many as twelve parts; in others, each soloist is allotted a solo (some soloists get multiple solos). The published score places the initials of each soloist next to his or her lines.

Wood conducted the first performance at his jubilee concert at the Royal Albert Hall on 5 October 1938. The orchestra comprised players from the three London orchestras -- the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The soloists were:

Sergei Rachmaninoff played in the first half of the concert as soloist in his Second Piano Concerto. When he heard the Serenade from his place in the audience, he was so overcome by the beauty of the music that he wept.
On 15 October 1938, Wood made the first recording (with the same soloists and the BBC Symphony Orchestra) at the HMV Abbey Road Studio No. 1. Vaughan Williams and HMV donated copyright fees received from the initial record sales to The Henry Wood Jubilee Fund, which was established to endow London hospital beds for British orchestral musicians.
In arranging Shakespeare's text, Vaughan Williams followed the word order, but cut words, phrases, and whole lines, and repeated at the end eleven words from the third and fourth lines, producing the following text. The initials mark the singers' solo passages; ensemble passages are shown in italics:

History: A Long time ago, Claudius was the beloved Prince of a kingdom to the West. He was young and handsome and eager to prove himself. He believed he was destined to be the king, due to the fact that current King and Queen had yet to produce any heirs. He was overconfident, and when the opportunity came for him to lead the kingdom into victory, he took it. But the war was a needless one. The young prince tricked. The kingdom that he believed were plotting against them, were not. He attacked an innocent country, and as result, many lives were lost. Their army, or what little left they had, came home in defeat. The Queen, his beloved sister, stripped him of his ranked, making him a head shorter. He was blamed for the entire affair and lost the favor of many. But he still had hope. He still had the chance to be king, that is, until Briar Rose was born. With that, it seemed as if he lost his chance to redeem himself forever. But he hasn't given up, yet.
Status/Goals: Claudius now serves as the loving uncle to the reigning Queen of the kingdom and her children. He and his family live a far distance from the royal family, but he often shows up to most events to better show that his only concern is to protect the royal family and the kingdom. But he really his biding his time, waiting for the right opportunity or person to come along that he help him get rid of Briar Rose and her children.
Abilities:
Besides the control of his own personal guards and his authority, he has no other significant abilities.

History: Lucrezia was born to a miller and his wife. She grew up to be an intelligent and innovative young woman, but her thoughts and ideas were often ignored because she was a peasant and a woman. She soon learned that in order for her to get a head in life, she would have to marry a man with power. She had set her eyes on the young Prince Claudius of the kingdom; he was the highest she could go. And to win his heart, she claimed she could turn straw into gold. She couldn't of course, but with the help of a certain shaman (Rumpelstiltskin), she managed to trick everyone into believing she could. She eventually married the prince whom promised her that he would be king one day and will make her his queen. But that day never came. He was a fool. He allowed himself to be tricked. Shamed. She found her love for him dwindling, but still believe she could use him.
Status/Goals:
Lucrezia now serves as the wife of Claudius and the mother of Anazelea. She currently resents both her husband and daughter for the lack everything that she had wanted. She sees her husband as nothing but a bitter fool who will never succeed and she sees her daughter as completely hopeless. Lucrezia has spent her whole life trying to succeed through others, and it still hasn't paid off.

History: Anazalea was born to Claudius and Lucrezia. She was their first and only child together, and eventually became just another disappointment. She didn't grow up to be as beautiful as her other cousins. She was not as graceful. Potential suitors found her plain and looked elsewhere despite her status as the Duke's daughter. She was regarded as clumsy and bad luck. Even her parents began to believe it after some time.
Status/Goals:
Anne now serves as daughter of the duke. Most people don't care enough to even remember her name. And although she loves her parents very much, she only feels hurt by their disappointment in her. Her father doesn't even care enough to be bothered, and her mother is always telling her to be more like her cousins instead.

The Man
"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either passively, openly or via sabotage.
History
As a phrase meaning "the boss" it dates from at least 1918.
In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.
The use of this term was expanded to counterculture groups and their battles against authority, such as the Yippies, which, according to a May 19, 1969 article in U.S. News and World Report, had the "avowed aim ... to destroy 'The Man', their term for the present system of government". The term eventually found its way into humorous usage, such as in a December 1979 motorcycle ad from the magazine Easyriders which featured the tagline, "California residents: Add 6% sales tax for The Man."

Depeche Mode
Depeche Mode /dᵻˌpɛʃˈmoʊd/ are an English electronic band formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. The group's original line-up consisted of Dave Gahan (lead vocals, occasional songwriter since 2005), Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, vocals, chief songwriter after 1981), Andy Fletcher (keyboards), and Vince Clarke (keyboards, chief songwriter from 1980 until 1981). Depeche Mode released their debut record in 1981, Speak & Spell, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Clarke left the band after the release of the album, leaving the band as a trio to record A Broken Frame, released the following year. Gore took over lead songwriting duties and, later in 1982, Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, occasional songwriter) officially joined the band to fill Clarke's spot, establishing a line up that would continue for the next thirteen years.
The band's last albums of the 1980s, Black Celebration and Music for the Masses, established them as a dominant force on the mainstream electronic music scene. A highlight of this era was the band's concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, where they drew a crowd in excess of 60,000 people. In the new decade, Depeche Mode released Violator, a mainstream success. The subsequent album, Songs of Faith and Devotion, and the supporting Devotional Tour exacerbated tensions within the band to the point where Alan Wilder quit in 1995, leading to intense media and fan speculation that the band would split. Now a trio once again, the band released Ultra in 1997, recorded at the height of Gahan's near-fatal drug abuse, Gore's alcoholism and seizures and Fletcher's depression. The release of Exciter confirmed Depeche Mode's willingness to remain together, the subsequent, and very successful, Exciter Tour being their first tour in support of an original album in eight years since the Devotional Tour, although the band had toured in 1998 to support The Singles 86–98 compilation album.

Violator (album)
Violator is the seventh studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode, released on 19 March 1990 by Mute Records.
Preceded by the hit singles "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence" (a top-10 hit in both the UK and US), Violator propelled the band into international stardom. The album yielded two further hit singles, "Policy of Truth" and "World in My Eyes". Violator is the band's first album to reach the top 10 on the Billboard 200, peaking at number seven. It was supported by the World Violation Tour.
Background and development
Compared to previous efforts, the band decided to try a new approach to recording. Alan Wilder said, "Usually we begin the making of a record by having extensive pre-production meetings where we decide what the record will actually sound like, then go into a programming studio. This time we decided to keep all pre-production work to a minimum. We were beginning to have a problem with boredom in that we felt we'd reached a certain level of achievement in doing things a certain way." Martin Gore elaborated, "Over the last five years I think we'd perfected a formula; my demos, a month in a programming studio, etc. etc. We decided that our first record of the '90s ought to be different."

"People Are People" is Depeche Mode's 10th UK single recorded at Hansa Mischraum in West Berlin, and released on 12 March 1984. It was their first hit single in the US and the first single from the Some Great Reward album.
Song information
"People Are People" was written by Martin Gore, but the dancy, pop feel of the song may be credited to Alan Wilder. Wilder wrote the B-side, "In Your Memory". Each song has an extended remix, the "Different Mix" and the "Slik Mix" respectively (although the "In Your Memory" mix is often incorrectly called the "Slick Mix"). It was one of the first songs recorded for the album when sessions began at the Hansa Mischraum studio in January 1984.
The Clive Richardson-directed "People Are People" video was released in 2 versions. The original video was made for the single version, but an alternate video was made with the "Different Mix". The music video featured footage of various military scenes from the Cold War, mixed with footage of the band aboard the HMS Belfast. The "Different Mix" video appears on Some Great Videos.

Ralph Vaughan Williams
Ralph Vaughan Williams OM (/ˌreɪf ˌvɔːn ˈwɪljəmz/ 12 October 1872 – 26 August 1958) was an English composer. His works include operas, ballets, chamber music, secular and religious vocal pieces and orchestral compositions including nine symphonies, written over nearly fifty years. Strongly influenced by Tudor music and English folk-song, his output marked a decisive break in British music from its German-dominated style of the 19th century.
Vaughan Williams was born to a well-to-do family with strong moral views and a progressive social outlook. Throughout his life he sought to be of service to his fellow citizens, and believed in making music as available as possible to everybody. He wrote many works for amateur and student performance. He was musically a late developer, not finding his true voice until his late thirties; his studies in 1907–08 with the French composer Maurice Ravel helped him clarify the textures of his music and free it from Teutonic influences.

You can find this and many other wonderful selections and information at his website: http://www.damians78s.co.uk Serenade to Music is a work by Ralph Vaughan Williams for 16 vocal soloists and orchestra, composed in 1938. The text is an adaptation of the discussion about music and the music of the spheres in Act V, Scene 1 of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare. Vaughan Williams wrote the piece as a tribute to the conductor Sir Henry Wood to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Wood's first concert. The solo parts were composed specifically for the voices of sixteen eminent British singers chosen by Wood and the composer. In some parts of the work, the soloists sing together as a "choir," sometimes in as many as twelve parts; in others, each soloist is allotted a solo (some soloists get multiple solos). The published score places the initials of each soloist next to his or her lines. The orchestra comprised players from the three London orchestras -- the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The soloists were: Sopranos: Isobel Baillie, Lilian Stiles-Allen, Elsie Suddaby, Eva Turner Contraltos: Muriel Brunskill, Astra Desmond, Mary Jarred, Margaret Balfour Tenors: Heddle Nash, Frank Titterton, Walter Widdop, Parry Jones Baritones: Harold Williams, Roy Henderson Basses: Robert Easton, Norman Allin Sergei Rachmaninoff played in the first half of the concert as soloist in his Second Piano Concerto. When he heard the Serenade from his place in the audience, he was so overcome by the beauty of the music that he wept. On 15 October 1938, Wood made the first recording (with the same soloists and the BBC Symphony Orchestra) at the HMV Abbey Road Studio No. 1. Vaughan Williams and HMV donated copyright fees received from the initial record sales to The Henry Wood Jubilee Fund, which was established to endow London hospital beds for British orchestral musicians. In arranging Shakespeare's text, Vaughan Williams followed the word order, but cut words, phrases, and whole lines, and repeated at the end eleven words from the third and fourth lines, producing the following text. The initials mark the singers' solo passages; ensemble passages are shown in italics: How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank! Status/Goals: Claudius now serves as the loving uncle to the reigning Queen of the kingdom and her children. He and his family live a far distance from the royal family, but he often shows up to most events to better show that his only concern is to protect the royal family and the kingdom. But he really his biding his time, waiting for the right opportunity or person to come along that he help him get rid of Briar Rose and her children. Abilities: Besides the control of his own personal guards and his authority, he has no other significant abilities. NEEDS/WANTS/OPEN FOR: Friends, enemies, lovers, etc. ------------------------------------------------------------ Name: The Duchess Lucrezia Age: -----(to be determined)----- Species: Human Played by: Lady Tremaine (Older Self); and Nele (younger self) Origin: The West Fairytale: The Miller's Daughter from Rumpelstiltskin History: Lucrezia was born to a miller and his wife. She grew up to be an intelligent and innovative young woman, but her thoughts and ideas were often ignored because she was a peasant and a woman. She soon learned that in order for her to get a head in life, she would have to marry a man with power. She had set her eyes on the young Prince Claudius of the kingdom; he was the highest she could go. And to win his heart, she claimed she could turn straw into gold. She couldn't of course, but with the help of a certain shaman (Rumpelstiltskin), she managed to trick everyone into believing she could. She eventually married the prince whom promised her that he would be king one day and will make her his queen. But that day never came. He was a fool. He allowed himself to be tricked. Shamed. She found her love for him dwindling, but still believe she could use him. Status/Goals: Lucrezia now serves as the wife of Claudius and the mother of Anazelea. She currently resents both her husband and daughter for the lack everything that she had wanted. She sees her husband as nothing but a bitter fool who will never succeed and she sees her daughter as completely hopeless. Lucrezia has spent her whole life trying to succeed through others, and it still hasn't paid off. Serenade to Music is a work by Ralph Vaughan Williams for 16 vocal soloists and orchestra, composed in 1938. The text is an adaptation of the discussion about music and the music of the spheres in Act V, Scene 1 of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.
Vaughan Williams wrote the piece as a tribute to the conductor Sir Henry Wood to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Wood's first concert. The solo parts were composed specifically for the voices of sixteen eminent British singers chosen by Wood and the composer. In some parts of the work, the soloists sing together as a "choir," sometimes in as many as twelve parts; in others, each soloist is allotted a solo (some soloists get multiple solos). The published score places the initials of each soloist next to his or her lines.

Wood conducted the first performance at his jubilee concert at the Royal Albert Hall on 5 October 1938. The orchestra comprised players from the three London orchestras -- the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The soloists were:

Sergei Rachmaninoff played in the first half of the concert as soloist in his Second Piano Concerto. When he heard the Serenade from his place in the audience, he was so overcome by the beauty of the music that he wept.
On 15 October 1938, Wood made the first recording (with the same soloists and the BBC Symphony Orchestra) at the HMV Abbey Road Studio No. 1. Vaughan Williams and HMV donated copyright fees received from the initial record sales to The Henry Wood Jubilee Fund, which was established to endow London hospital beds for British orchestral musicians.
In arranging Shakespeare's text, Vaughan Williams followed the word order, but cut words, phrases, and whole lines, and repeated at the end eleven words from the third and fourth lines, producing the following text. The initials mark the singers' solo passages; ensemble passages are shown in italics:

History: A Long time ago, Claudius was the beloved Prince of a kingdom to the West. He was young and handsome and eager to prove himself. He believed he was destined to be the king, due to the fact that current King and Queen had yet to produce any heirs. He was overconfident, and when the opportunity came for him to lead the kingdom into victory, he took it. But the war was a needless one. The young prince tricked. The kingdom that he believed were plotting against them, were not. He attacked an innocent country, and as result, many lives were lost. Their army, or what little left they had, came home in defeat. The Queen, his beloved sister, stripped him of his ranked, making him a head shorter. He was blamed for the entire affair and lost the favor of many. But he still had hope. He still had the chance to be king, that is, until Briar Rose was born. With that, it seemed as if he lost his chance to redeem himself forever. But he hasn't given up, yet.
Status/Goals: Claudius now serves as the loving uncle to the reigning Queen of the kingdom and her children. He and his family live a far distance from the royal family, but he often shows up to most events to better show that his only concern is to protect the royal family and the kingdom. But he really his biding his time, waiting for the right opportunity or person to come along that he help him get rid of Briar Rose and her children.
Abilities:
Besides the control of his own personal guards and his authority, he has no other significant abilities.

History: Lucrezia was born to a miller and his wife. She grew up to be an intelligent and innovative young woman, but her thoughts and ideas were often ignored because she was a peasant and a woman. She soon learned that in order for her to get a head in life, she would have to marry a man with power. She had set her eyes on the young Prince Claudius of the kingdom; he was the highest she could go. And to win his heart, she claimed she could turn straw into gold. She couldn't of course, but with the help of a certain shaman (Rumpelstiltskin), she managed to trick everyone into believing she could. She eventually married the prince whom promised her that he would be king one day and will make her his queen. But that day never came. He was a fool. He allowed himself to be tricked. Shamed. She found her love for him dwindling, but still believe she could use him.
Status/Goals:
Lucrezia now serves as the wife of Claudius and the mother of Anazelea. She currently resents both her husband and daughter for the lack everything that she had wanted. She sees her husband as nothing but a bitter fool who will never succeed and she sees her daughter as completely hopeless. Lucrezia has spent her whole life trying to succeed through others, and it still hasn't paid off.

Fairytale: The Boy from The Boy that Cried Wolf
History: A Long time ago, Claudius was the beloved Prince of a kingdom to the West. He was young and handsome and eager to prove himself. He believed he was destined to be the king, due to the fact that current King and Queen had yet to produce any heirs. He was overconfident, and when the opportunity came for him to lead the kingdom into victory, he took it. But the war was a needless one. The young prince tricked. The kingdom that he believed were plotting against them, were not. He attacked an innocent country, and as result, many lives were lost. Their army, or what little left they had, came home in defeat. The Queen, his beloved sister, stripped him of his ranked, making him a head shorter. He was blamed for the entire affair and lost the favor of many. But he still had hope. He still had the chance to be king, that is, until Briar Rose was born. With that, it seemed as if he lost his chance to redeem himself forever. But he hasn't given up, yet.
Status/Goals: Claudius now serves as the loving uncle to the reigning Queen of the kingdom and her children. He and his family live a far distance from the royal family, but he often shows up to most events to better show that his only concern is to protect the royal family and the kingdom. But he really his biding his time, waiting for the right opportunity or person to come along that he help him get rid of Briar Rose and her children.
Abilities:
Besides the control of his own personal guards and his authority, he has no other significant abilities.

Fairytale: The Miller's Daughter from Rumpelstiltskin
History: Lucrezia was born to a miller and his wife. She grew up to be an intelligent and innovative young woman, but her thoughts and ideas were often ignored because she was a peasant and a woman. She soon learned that in order for her to get a head in life, she would have to marry a man with power. She had set her eyes on the young Prince Claudius of the kingdom; he was the highest she could go. And to win his heart, she claimed she could turn straw into gold. She couldn't of course, but with the help of a certain shaman (Rumpelstiltskin), she managed to trick everyone into believing she could. She eventually married the prince whom promised her that he would be king one day and will make her his queen. But that day never came. He was a fool. He allowed himself to be tricked. Shamed. She found her love for him dwindling, but still believe she could use him.
Status/Goals:
Lucrezia now serves as the wife of Claudius and the mother of Anazelea. She currently resents both her husband and daughter for the lack everything that she had wanted. She sees her husband as nothing but a bitter fool who will never succeed and she sees her daughter as completely hopeless. Lucrezia has spent her whole life trying to succeed through others, and it still hasn't paid off.

Serenade to Music is a work by Ralph Vaughan Williams for 16 vocal soloists and orchestra, composed in 1938. The text is an adaptation of the discussion about music and the music of the spheres in Act V, Scene 1 of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.
Vaughan Williams wrote the piece as a tribute to the conductor Sir Henry Wood to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Wood's first concert. The solo parts were composed specifically for the voices of sixteen eminent British singers chosen by Wood and the composer. In some parts of the work, the soloists sing together as a "choir," sometimes in as many as twelve parts; in others, each soloist is allotted a solo (some soloists get multiple solos). The published score places the initials of each soloist next to his or her lines.

History: A Long time ago, Claudius was the beloved Prince of a kingdom to the West. He was young and handsome and eager to prove himself. He believed he was destined to be the king, due to the fact that current King and Queen had yet to produce any heirs. He was overconfident, and when the opportunity came for him to lead the kingdom into victory, he took it. But the war was a needless one. The young prince tricked. The kingdom that he believed were plotting against them, were not. He attacked an innocent country, and as result, many lives were lost. Their army, or what little left they had, came home in defeat. The Queen, his beloved sister, stripped him of his ranked, making him a head shorter. He was blamed for the entire affair and lost the favor of many. But he still had hope. He still had the chance to be king, that is, until Briar Rose was born. With that, it seemed as if he lost his chance to redeem himself forever. But he hasn't given up, yet.
Status/Goals: Claudius now serves as the loving uncle to the reigning Queen of the kingdom and her children. He and his family live a far distance from the royal family, but he often shows up to most events to better show that his only concern is to protect the royal family and the kingdom. But he really his biding his time, waiting for the right opportunity or person to come along that he help him get rid of Briar Rose and her children.
Abilities:
Besides the control of his own personal guards and his authority, he has no other significant abilities.

Friends, enemies, lovers, etc.

She soon learned that in order for her to get a head in life, she would have to marry a man with power. She had set her eyes on the young Prince Claudius of the kingdom; he was the highest she could go. And to win his heart, she claimed she could turn straw into gold. She couldn't of course, but with the help of a certain shaman (Rumpelstiltskin), she managed to trick everyone into believing she could. She eventually married the prince whom promised her that he would be king one day and will make her his queen. But that day never came. He was a fool. He allowed himself to be tricked. Shamed. She found her love for him dwindling, but still believe she could use him.
Status/Goals:
Lucrezia now serves as the wife of Claudius and the mother of Anazelea. She currently resents both her husband and daughter for the lack everything that she had wanted. She sees her husband as nothing but a bitter fool who will never succeed and she sees her daughter as completely hopeless. Lucrezia has spent her whole life trying to succeed through others, and it still hasn't paid off.

Anne now serves as daughter of the duke. Most people don't care enough to even remember her name. And although she loves her parents very much, she only feels hurt by their disappointment in her. Her father doesn't even care enough to be bothered, and her mother is always telling her to be more like her cousins instead.
