You CAN go home again! Parenthood star Monica Potter renovates the 1924 house she grew up in for new TV series

Patch Adams and Parenthood star Monica Potter literally goes home in a new series that premieres on HGTV Tuesday.

The actress, 44, not only returns to her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, but she also returns to the house she grew up in with her parents and three sisters.

'We sold the home in 1987 and for the last five years it's been abandoned,' she explained in a promotional video for the show. 'I've always wanted to buy the house back.'

Historic property: The two-story house built in 1924 overlooks Lake Erie and was abandoned for five years before the actress bought it

And that's exactly what Monica did, and with the help of her mom Nancy and sisters Brigette, Kerry and Jessica, set about restoring the two-story property.

'For me, family is everything,' the actress said. 'Growing up we didn't have much but we all had each other.'

'I couldn't let it go,' she added. "I didn't want to see it torn down.'

Like time stood still: Inside they found the residence had been barely touched since they moved out in 1987

Still there: The family's dining table and chairs were still there as was the very unusual wallpaper and a bunch of stuff including old cassette tapes

Abandoned: The small rooms hadn't been touched for years and were very dated

It turned out that time had stood still inside the small house, that was built in 1924.

When the family looked inside, they found lots of their old stuff still sitting there, including their old dining table, her late father's workbench, and their original wallpaper.

'We never expected what we'd find inside,' Monica said. 'Home is where the heart is and this is where our heart is.'

Quite a journey: The five women spent eight weeks renovating the home with the help of a construction crew and documented it all for the cameras

Before and after: The unusable backyard and broken down porch was renovated to offer a grassy area with shrubs and a sitting area with outdoor lighting

Then and now: The dilapidated sun room overlooking Lake Erie was renovated to become a cozy and warm living space

Old and new: The bleak bathroom was redesigned to feature a pink tub with claw feet and a designer distressed wooden vanity

Welcome Back Potter on HGTV will share the family's experience as they spend eight weeks working to restore and renovate their old home that overlooks Lake Erie.

'Although the neighborhood has changed a lot, the feeling has not,' the actress told popgoestheweek.com as she promoted the series.

'There is a feeling of community – a lot of our neighbors growing up are still there. We all have each other’s backs. What was interesting was that our neighbors knew how much I loved it and that also played a part in my getting it back.'
