Leaving the ultra-orthodox – Jews seeking a new life in Germany | DW Documentary
Increasing numbers of Jews have been leaving ultra-orthodox communities in recent years. Surprisingly, Germany has become a popular refuge for them. Rabbi Akiva Weingarten has been helping them.
More than 1.3 million Jews live in ultra-orthodox communities worldwide. It’s a kind of parallel universe — in which only God’s laws count. The Ultra Orthodox vs. The IDF: Israel's Other Religious War
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News
Since Israel's inception, the Haredi — ultra-Orthodox adherents of Judaism —have been exempt from the country's military conscription laws. But their growing population, coupled with their high unemployment rate and dependence on state benefits, sparked outrage within the country's secular majority. After years of demanding that the Haredi share the responsibility of serving in the armed forces, the Israeli government passed an unprecedented law in March 2014 that requires Haredi men to serve in the military.
The decision resulted in major opposition from the Ultra Orthodox community, from violent protests to religious leaders demanding that no one should comply. VICE News travels to Israel to speak with hardline members a...

Akiva Weingarten was one of them. He grew up in an ultra-orthodox Satmar community in New York State but made a radical break in 2014. He left his wife and children and started a new life in Berlin - without a credit card, a bank account or a job, or any relatives to fall back on. He is now surrounded by a free community of former ultra-orthodox Jews - who turn to the rabbi for practical and religious advice. Moshe Barnett and David Lamberger have only been flat mates in Dresden for a few months now. They are not just seeking a new life, but a new relationship with God.

What is Hasidic Judaism? Watch our new explainer video to learn the history of the Hasidic movement, from the Ba’al Shem Tov to creating an distinct community of mystical and observant Jews.
The Hasidic movement was formed in the mid 1800s by Jewish mystics in Eastern Europe, most notably the Ba’al Shem Tov, who was a traveled Kabbalistic, providing spiritual advice to those he met. But many Jews at that time were opposed to this new emerging movement. The Hasids were prayer enthusiasts. When they prayed, they would jump, clap, somersault, and even cry.
Despite opposition, the Hasidim continued to grow, engulfing most of Eastern Europe. They became part of the community, by serving as spiritual advisers, koshering meats, attending to the ill and deceased, and more. They continued to thrive until the persecution of Jews in the Soviet Union and World War II either killed them or drove them to seek refuge elsewhere. Some Hasids that escaped, traveled to America and began the rival of the movement which we see today most prominently on the streets of Brooklyn, New York.

Dating and matchmaking in the "Haredi" (ultra-orthodox Jewish) world has always been mysterious and intriguingly different from the secular world. At a time when the institution of marriage in the modern secular world is about to go bankrupt – increasing divorce rates, infidelity, the trend of extended bachelorhood, single parenting, etc. – the question arises: where are we going wrong? And what is it about Haredi relationships that keeps them strong and stable? How does it work?
In the documentary "A Match Made in Heaven" we explore the world of matchmaking in the different sectors of the Haredi world and observe couples in different stages of relationships, and through them we learn about their behavior, philosophy, and the key to a happy relationship and marriage.
Through the participants' stories we learn the values of relationships and marriage according to Judaism and how they actually apply them – so different from secular attitudes (falling in love as opposed to love which comes with time; the women's role in relationships; the man's role; sexuality).

For the first time orthodox Jewish people in Israel allow a camera to enter their personal lives on an intimate level, enabling us to discover the wisdom behind their way of life, so perhaps we can apply some of it to ours. A look at relationships between men and women, between singles and their friends, and between them and their families. The story is plot-based, with scenes that lead from one protagonist to the next in their search for a worthy mate.

VICE News travels to Israel to speak with hardline members and leaders of the Ultra Orthodox community as well as soldiers in the Netzah Yehuda, the IDF's Ultra Orthodox Battalion, to get their take on the government's decision.

What is the Talmud?
The layout of the Talmud, one of the most important Jewish texts, has remained virtually unchanged since its earliest days in print. This layout reveals a compelling look at Jewish values. What part did Daniel Bomberg - a Christian printer in Venice play in its publication, what’s behind the concept of “daf yomi” (reading a page of Talmud a day) and why has the Talmud’s graphic design not changed for generations?

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE TALMUD: Repository of The Oral Torah or Oral Law
THE TALMUD: The Repository of the Oral Law. This introduction answers: What is the Talmud and what is its role in Judaism? The Talmud has two components: the Mishnah, a written compendium of Rabbinic Judaism's Oral Torah, and the Gemara, an elucidation of the Mishnah and related Tannaic writings that often ventures onto other subjects and expounds broadly on the Hebrew Bible. Presented by Rabbi Michael Skobac.

The Talmud Audiobook Volume I
Translated by Michael L. Rodkinson
[1918]
The Talmud is a vast collection of Jewish laws and traditions. Despite the dry subject matter the Talmud makes interesting reading because it is infused with vigorous intellectual debate, humor and deep wisdom. As the saying goes, 'you don't have to be Jewish' to appreciate this text. If you put in the hard work required to read the Talmud, your mind will get a world-class workout. The process of studying the Talmud has been compared with the practice of Zen Buddhist Koan meditation, and for good reason.

What the Jews' Talmud says about Babies, Jesus, Blacks, and Christians
I DON'T OWN THIS CONTENT BUT WAS PERMITTED TO REUPLOAD.
Most Jews, with exception to the Jews for Jesus, reject Jesus as their Savior and Lord. Alongside the Torah are the false Jews’ Talmudic writings which they regard higher than the Torah.
The Talmud states that it’s perfectly fine to have sex with infants, commit murder (if done indirectly), that Jesus was a sinner and burning in hell, black skin is a curse, black people are low life creatures, and that all Gentile nations are inferior to the Jew.

Volume I
Chapter I: Regulations Regarding Transfer on Sabbath
Chapter II: Regulations Concerning The Sabbath And 'Hanukah Light
Chapter III: Regulations Concerning Stoves, Hearths, and Ovens
Chapter IV: Regulations Concerning Victuals, Where They May or May Not Be Deposited to Retain Their Heat for the Sabbath
Chapter V: Regulations Concerning What May and May Not Be Worn by Animals on the Sabbath
Chapter VI: Regulations Concerning What Garments Women May Go Out With On the Sabbath
Chapter VII: The General Rule Concerning the Principal Acts of Labor on Sabbath
Chapter VIII: Regulations Concerning the Prescribed Quantities of Victuals and Beverages Which Must Not Be Carried About on the Sabbath
Chapter IX: Rabbi Aqiba's Regulations On Different Subjects
Chapter X: Further Regulations Concerning The Prescribed Quantity of Things To Be Stored

Rebel Rabbis: Anti-Zionist Jews Against Israel
VICE embeds with the London branch of the Neturei Karta, a group of controversial Ultra Orthodox Jews who campaign against Zionism and for the immediate dismantling of the state of Israel.
Because of their unusual views, and support of people like ex-Iranian president Ahmadinejad and groups like the Hungarian far right Jobbik party, other Jewish people often label them as extremists.
Reporter Milène Larsson goes behind the closed doors of this secretive community to understand why this Jewish group's anti-Israel sentiment has led them to join Palestinians protesting Israeli occupation and burn Israeli flags.

Even though Jews make up less than one quarter of one percent of the world’s population, they are one of the most targeted minority groups in the world. Why all the hate for the Jews?
Before we look at why people hate Jews, also known as Antisemitism, we need to define “Jew.” A Jew is someone who identifies with the cultural community whose traditional religion is Judaism and who traces their ancestry to the ancient Hebrew people of Israel, all the way back to Abraham. Jewish people are considered an ethnoreligious group. Both an ethnic group and a religion. There are plenty who identify as Jews yet are not religious. Israel’s Law of Return, which is the law that gives Jews the right to visit and be a citizen of Israel, says a Jew is someone with either a Jewish mother or who has converted to Judaism.
Anyway, during the time of Jesus in ancient Israel, many were of course Jewish, including Jesus himself. After Jesus died, his followers started a new religion called Christianity. As Christianity spread, and as more and more Roman emperors converted to the religion, Jews became marginalized in society, even though Jews worshipped the same God as Christians did. Roman rulers viewed the refusal of the Jewish community to accept Jesus as the Messiah as a threat. They straight up passed laws that discriminated against Jews. In the year 399, a law saying Jews couldn’t marry Christians, in 439, a law saying Jews couldn’t hold positions in government. In 531, a law saying they couldn’t appear as witnesses against Christians in court. Rumors began to spread that Jews had horns and tails, and that they killed Christian children and used their blood for rituals.
In the Middle Ages, many societies forced Jews to live in segregated ghettos and wear special clothing. The Catholic Church did not allow Jews to own land, so Jews couldn’t build up wealth through property. However, the Church also didn’t let Christians loan money for profit. Jews could, so they often turned to money lending to build up wealth. Due to the fact that nearly every moneylender happened to be Jewish, this ended up creating a stereotype that Jews were greedy. I mean, people who loan money and charge interest throughout history have rarely been seen in a positive light, amIright? Christian rulers used Jewish money to build extravagant churches and build up armies.
By the 11th century, Christianity dominated Europe, and the main minority religion was Judaism. Jews seemed to be the one group Christians could not convert, seen as outsiders. By this time, the Catholic Church was even teaching that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus. And then, the Black Death. During the 14th century, the bubonic plague spread quickly across Europe, killing around ⅓ of its entire population. Since this was before science, people had no idea what was causing it. Due to superstition and fear, and without any evidence whatsoever, Christians blamed Jews for causing the plague, accusing them of poisoning wells to spread the disease.

Judaism, at 4000 years old it is one of the oldest monotheistic religions and the granddaddy of Christianity and Islam. But even though its teachings helped create the world’s two most popular religions many people don’t know what the Jews actually believe.
Judaism developed in the eastern Mediterranean over the last 4000ish years. Today there are about 15 million Jews making it the world’s tenth-largest religion.
What is the Torah? What’s a Covenant? And why does no one worship mermen in the Middle-East anymore? Well Let’s Find out.
