Finding sanity on a road trip to Sydney

Caz Makepeace

The rain set in the moment we arrived home from Thailand. Cyclonic weather followed by days of cold rain.

Australian summers keep getting weirder year after year. A week indoors with the children after quite a stressful overseas holiday was putting the cabin fever into overdrive.

We woke up on Sunday and the rain was continuing to fall.

“Right, that is it. We need to get out of the house. Let’s go to Sydney. The travel expo is on, we might as well check it out.”

After two weeks of holding Savannah back from running around a car with no seat belts, restaurants on busy roads, and up and down plane aisles, I firmly stated that under no circumstances would we catch the train to the city.

“And I don’t care that it is cheap $2.50 Sunday. I know where we can get cheap Sydney parking for only $10.”

I needed both my girls strapped in their car seats so I could sit in the front and stare out the window without a thought or task to complete.

Just me, the open road, some tunes, my Navman to guide the way and, hopefully, enjoyable conversation with the children and the hubby.

The hour drive seemed to go so quickly, but I think it was because for the first time in weeks I was transported around without a stress or demand. The girls only start to lose it a few blocks away from Darling Harbour.

Yep, road trips are looking more like my way of doing things for the next couple of years!

We stopped for a Starbucks coffee, which was not relaxing as Savannah wanted to run up and down stairs, so we left just as quick for a carousel ride and a walk through the conference halls to the travel expo.

The exhibitions were busier than a Bangkok night market, so we did a quick run around, lusting over the cheap travel deals and then ventured outside for a play in Darling Park.

Which did not last long thanks to the rain. I didn’t care. I had made it out of the house, and found a dose of sanity driving on the freeway to Sydney. There’s a lot to be said for strapping kids in car seats.
