The Beqaa Valley (Arabic: وادي البقاع, Wādī l-Biqā‘, Lebanese [bʔaːʕ]; Armenian: Բեքայի դաշտավայր), also transliterated as Bekaa, Biqâ, and Becaa and known in classical antiquity as Coele-Syria, is a fertile valley in eastern Lebanon. It is Lebanon's most important farming region. Industry also flourishes in Beqaa, especially that related to agriculture.
The Beqaa is located about 30 km (19 mi) east of Beirut. The valley is situated between Mount Lebanon to the west and Anti-Lebanon mountains to the east. It forms the northeasternmost extension of the Great Rift Valley, which stretches from Syria to the Red Sea. Beqaa Valley is about 120 kilometres (75 mi) in length and has an average width of about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi). It has a Mediterranean climate of wet, often snowy winters and dry, warm summers. The region receives limited rainfall, particularly in the north, because Mount Lebanon creates a rain shadow that blocks precipitation coming from the sea. The northern section has an average annual rainfall of 230 millimetres (9.1 in)), compared to 610 millimetres (24 in) in the central valley. Two rivers originate in the valley: the Orontes (Asi), which flows north into Syria and Turkey, and the Litani, which flows south and then west to the Mediterranean Sea.

Over the past year, images of dramatic sea crossings to Europe focused international attention on Syria's refugee crisis. But the vast majority of those fleeing Syria's civil war, including the most vulnerable, remain in the Middle East, living marginal existences with uncertain futures. More than one million of those Syrians are currently living in limbo in Lebanon, which now hosts more refugees per capita than any other country in the world. When VICE News first met families in the Al Marj refugee camp over a year ago, many expressed their hope to return to Syria. A year later, we found them learning hard lessons in how they might survive in an exile that could last for many more years. VICE News returns to a refugee camp in the eastern Lebanese city of Al Marj, where refugees are stru...
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Cannabis cultivation in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley is an ancient practice that dates back to the beginning of recorded history. During the Lebanese civil war between 1975-1990, it provided funding for feuding militias and turned Lebanon into one of the world's largest hashish exporters. Today, Lebanon's feuding militias are still using drugs as a source of income. Under international pressure, the Lebanese government is cracking down on smaller Cannabis farmers while drug lords continue to act with impunity. Security forces confronting armed farmers defending their crops have lead to bloody gun battles between the warring sides. VICE News hung out with some of the farmers to learn about Lebanon's ancient hashish industry and s...

Over a dozen ISIL terrorists have been killed as the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah repelled their attack in an area on the Syrian border. Fierce clashes erupted after ISIL terrorists tried to penetrate the Hezbollah defense installations in the north-eastern Lebanese border village of Ras Baalbe. Several ISIL senior commanders were also killed in the counter-attack. Hezbollah fighters have recently managed to regain control of several strategic areas along the Syrian border. The resistance movement is also flushing the Takfiri terrorists out of their last hideouts in the strategic mountainous Qalamoun region on the border. Filmed in June 2006, 2 weeks before the latest outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, Megan McCormick travels to Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. It is a city with a long history of political and social unrest, but retains an atmosphere of optimism and hope for the future. Megan finds a warm welcome at her traveller’s hostel, before heading out in search of a decent falafel. After lunch Megan gets a briefing on the current political landscape and history of Lebanon from the editor of a national Lebanese newspaper. They visit a few of the city’s key areas, where fighting during the civil war took place, but keep a safe distance from the volatile southern suburbs. The Beirut future rests with the young. After learning about the past and the present, Megan meets up with a group of young rap ...

Bookwitty believes in universal access to books for everyone. With that in mind, we have donated hundreds of them to displaced Syrian children in the Bekaa Valley. All this was possible thanks to our partnership with Save the Children.
A predominantly Christian village in Lebanon's Bekaa valley has suffered seven suicide bombings in less than 24 hours. At least five people have been killed and 28 others wounded in two waves of attacks in Qaa. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, but suspicion is falling on the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group (ISIL, also known, as ISIS). Two young Syrian sisters made ragdolls using their mother's leftover fabric at a refugee centre in the Bekaa Valley, Wednesday. Shamsa and Thuha fled from the Syrian city of Aleppo with their family when they were just seven and five years old, respectively. They have been living in a tent at the refugee centre for the past three years. The sisters started missing their old dolls that they left back in Syria and so decided to make new ones using the leftover fabric from their mother's tailoring work. SOT, Shamsa, Syrian refugee (Arabic): "I bring a piece of fabric and I sew it. When I finish, I turn it over and fill it inside." SOT, Shamsa, Syrian refugee (Arabic): "Then I fit the head on. The hair comes last." SOT, Thuha, Syrian refugee (Arabic): "I make them. It’s better than having...

Syrian terror spillover into Lebanon At least four rockets fired from Syria have landed in an area near the Lebanese border town of Baalbek in Bekaa Valley, Press TV reports. It was not immediately clear who launched the rockets or why they were fired into the Lebanese soil. But al-Qaeda-linked militants operating in Syria have claimed responsibility for a number of similar attacks on Lebanese border towns in the past months. Seven people were killed on January 17 in the town of Arsal, some 124 kilometers northeast of Beirut, by mortar shells fired from the Syrian side of the border. On January 25, the al-Nusra Front in Lebanon issued a threat against Hezbollah, saying it will continue attacks against the resistance movement. The statement came days after the al-Qaeda-affiliated group...

The Bekaa Valley in Lebanon is at the centre of the illegal trade of hashish and heroin. Vast drug clans rule the land and everyone has a year round supply of ammunition. With unbelievable access, 'The Hashish Army' goes where no police dare. "We have grown hashish for a hundred years. No government has ever been able to stop us". This is a world of war and corruption where violence in the streets is part of the routine. Militia fire their machine guns wildly at a busy market where drug dealers sell jeans with hashish hidden in the pockets -- and in the midst of such constant shoot-outs, the window replacement business thrives. It's not the only business that's booming. "Before we grew hashish there was poverty. Now the poor man has changed his condition, he became rich." There are many p...
Tumma on taivas ja pimennetyt puut
Kun matkustan pikkuveljen luota kaupunkiin
Olisin jo halunnut jäädä kotiin
Herätä aikaisin aamulla lumiauran kolahduksiin
Pysy aina pikkuveljenä ja lintuna, älä koskaan miehisty
En meidän taloon lisää aikuisia halua
Tiedän kyllä että undulaatit tapaavat
Miestenvessoissa turpiinsa saada
Mutta vielä pikkuveli lukee aamulla
Sängyssä mun kanssa sängyssä mun kanssa sarjakuvia
Pysy aina pikkuveljenä ja lintuna, älä koskaan miehisty
