Speaker: Jeong-Woo Koo, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, Sungkyunkwan University I examine the South Korean media coverage of human rights during the period, 1990-2010. I code 1,943 newspaper articles with mentions of human rights obtained from three major South Korean print media. Korea serves as an interesting case where human rights recently emerged as a major policy frame, entered school curricula, and penetrated into the public attitudes. Using a mix-methods approach, I analyze (a) how and why human rights appeared in South Korea, (b) how the coverage became increasingly contested, and (c) what domestic conditions led to the intensified contestation over the meaning and scope of human rights. My contention is that a key consequential aspect of the ongoing spread of human...
SAMSUNG TEMPORARILY HALTS PRODUCTION OF GALAXY NOTE 7, SOUTH KOREAN MEDIA OUTLET REPORTS Samsung Electronics has temporarily halted production of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Monday, following reports that replacements for the fire-prone phones were also overheating. Citing an unnamed official at a Samsung supplier, Yonhap said the tech giant took the unprecedented measure for the sake of consumer safety. The move follows decisions by U.S. phone retailers AT&T; and T-Mobile to stop giving new Note 7 smartphones to consumers to replace older models while investigations of the replacement devices are underway. Samsung's troubles with the Galaxy Note 7, which was recalled last month after reports of its batteries catching fire, appear not to be ov...
The recent case amid mounting anti-Americanism reflects the mindset of south Korean people censuring the U.S. for bringing the danger of a war to the Korean peninsula through the madcap saber-rattling.
South Korean media reports that North Korea's defense minister was publicly executed by an anti-aircraft gun. CNN's Elise Labott reports.
The state-funded Agency for Defense Development in South Korea unveils to media suspected North Korean drones that crashed near the border. Full Story: The state-funded Agency for Defense Development in South Korea on Friday presented to media suspected North Korean drones, which were found crashed on South Korean territory that are currently under investigation. South Korea found three drones in recent weeks on the border island Baegnyeongdo and in Paju as well as in Samcheok. Nearly 200 aerial photographs were recovered from a camera carried by the drone found on the border island, including some taken directly above the presidential Blue House, but the aircraft had no equipment to transmit the images. South Korea's military has been ciriticised for apparently failing to spot or sto...
In the March 2, 2014 edition of The Dallas Morning News appeared an article reprinted from The New York Times titled "S. Korea assails Japan over wartime brothels." The article is rooted in Japan Bashing, pure and simple. No pretext in this article to just report news without exposing extreme anti-Japanese bias. The article covered in part South Korean President Park's comments during a nationally televised speech. The article quotes President Park's critical comments about Japan not being in touch with history. Should not President Park do the same about her country's history? President Park Geun-hye, her father Park Chung-hee joined the Japanese Imperial Army and rose to become a distinguished officer. Is that the history President Park would like to discuss? How about the his...
Threatening comments emanating out of North Korea's state-run media outlets seem to be reaching a crescendo. According to North Korean media output aggregator, the Washington-based Korean Central News Agency Watch, on Friday... the threat index gauging how threatening the comments are currently stands at zero-point-four. That means... articles with aggressive expressions take up around 40 percent of all news reports. The figure marks the same as those posted in 1999 and 2013... when they hit record-highs. In 1999, a series of clashes between the two Koreas took place near the Northern Limit Line, while Pyongyang conducted its third nuclear test in 2013. After the North conducted its fifth nuclear test on September ninth, the South Korean government said Pyongyang is capable of carrying out...

South Korean President Park Geun-hye has announced that Seoul will focus on securing "new and strong" international sanctions against Pyongyang at the UN Security Council. At a meeting in Seoul on Thursday, Park said that past negotiations had failed to stop the expansion of the DPRK's nuclear program. South Korean media have reported that Pyongyang may conduct a sixth nuclear test soon. The Western mainstream-media finally picked up on the South Korean Gamer Gate, unsurprisingly we're seeing a rinse and repeat. They picked the feminists, painted Gamers as demons and spoke only to feminists in interview. They paint one-sided stories and have little interest in objectivity. Which angers me infinitely because the UK has TV licences to fund the BBC. As i said before, we need to support SKGG, because they're dealing with the same shit, slander and hate campaigns we did. And our experience and support is likely welcome. Article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-37018916 Patreon: Patreon.com/user?u=689298
