A tour of some popular spots in the Canadian Rockies, among them are Banff National Park in the Province of Alberta and Yoho National Park in the Province of British Columbia.
Filmed in June 2011.

The Town of Banff was the first municipality to incorporate within a Canadian national park. It is a resort town and one of Canada's most popular tourist destinations, known for its mountainous surroundings and hot springs. It is a destination for outdoor sports and features extensive hiking, biking, scrambling and skiing.
Lake Louise is a glacial lake within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. Fairmont's Chateau Lake Louise, one of Canada's grand railway hotels, is located on Lake Louise's eastern shore. It is a luxury resort hotel built in the early decades of the 20th century by the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Johnston Creek is a tributary of the Bow River in Canada's Rocky Mountains. The creek is located in Banff National Park. A popular hiking trail follows the canyon and leads to a meadow within the Johnston Valley above the canyon. The first part of the trail consists of a constructed walkway with safety rails and bridges, while the last part of the trail is natural and more rugged. Within the meadow are the Ink Pots, which are six blue-green spring-fed pools. Ice climbing is a popular activity on the frozen waterfalls in winter.

I've had a great time visiting Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre in the vicinity of the town of Golden. This wolf sanctuary and it's instructors, armed with their wealth of knowledge, give the centres' visitors a true depiction of these majestic and reclusive creatures.

Unfortunately, the weather during the time of the shoot was less than perfect with extended periods of cloudiness and rain. However, even under those conditions, a visit is highly recommended!

Solo 40 km backpack hike to Howse pass in Banff Park, Alberta. This is an abandoned fur trading route. I show tricks for making life easy in the wilderness. The trail was in such bad shape, with so much deadfall, that I had to abandon my attempt to reach the pass. Description
Guy Clarkson takes off in his bush plane, a Piper Super Cub on a four-hour filmic journey along the great Divide. The Blackfoot Indians call it "Mistakis", the "Backbone of the World". Clarkson feels expecially responsible for two thousand kilometres of the Rocky Mountains, from Yellowstone National Park in the south to the Yukon in the north. For over twenty-five years he's lived and worked here as a mountain guide, pilot and cinematographer. Always curious and ever respectful of the forces of nature we do not always understand, Clarkson is determined to come to grips with what makes his mountains work--and why he fears they might one day soon go on strike. He first examines The Ancient Ones, the rock and ice and flora and fauna that, over eons, have adjusted without complaint to every fluctuation in the natural order of things. Then came the first human inhabitants to the mountains, bands of nomads who survived by adapting to every change. Ice Ages and volcanic eruptions challenged but did not destroy them. But since the arrival of Europeans, the damage to ecosystems and tribes alike has approached a point of no return. Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains, commonly known as the Rockies, are a major mountain range in western North America. The Rocky Mountains stretch more than 3,000 miles (4,800 km) from the northernmost part of British Columbia, in western Canada, to New Mexico, in the southwestern United States. Within the North American Cordillera, the Rockies are somewhat distinct from the Pacific Coast Ranges and the Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada which all lie further to the west.
The Rocky Mountains were initially formed from 80 million to 55 million years ago during the Laramide orogeny, in which a number of plates began to slide underneath the North American plate. The angle of subduction was shallow, resulting in a broad belt of mountains running down western North America. Since then, further tectonic activity and erosion by glaciers have sculpted the Rockies into dramatic peaks and valleys. At the end of the last ice age, humans started to inhabit the mountain range. After Europeans, such as Sir Alexander Mackenzie and Americans, such as the Lewis and Clark expedition, started to explore the range, minerals and furs drove the initial economic exploitation of the mountains, although the range itself never became densely populated.

Solo 3-day backpacking hike in Banff Rocky Mountains
Solo 40 km backpack hike to Howse pass in Banff Park, Alberta. This is an abandoned fur trading route. I show tricks for making life easy in the wilderness. The trail was in such bad shape, with so much deadfall, that I had to abandon my attempt to reach the pass. It is a resort town and one of Canada's most popular tourist destinations, known for its mountainous surroundings and hot springs. It is a destination for outdoor sports and features extensive hiking, biking, scrambling and skiing.
Lake Louise is a glacial lake within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. Fairmont's Chateau Lake Louise, one of Canada's grand railway hotels, is located on Lake Louise's eastern shore. It is a luxury resort hotel built in the early decades of the 20th century by the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Johnston Creek is a tributary of the Bow River in Canada's Rocky Mountains. The creek is located in Banff National Park. A popular hiking trail follows the canyon and leads to a meadow within the Johnston Valley above the canyon. The first part of the trail consists of a constructed walkway with safety rails and bridges, while the last part of the trail is natural and more rugged. Within the meadow are the Ink Pots, which are six blue-green spring-fed pools. Ice climbing is a popular activity on the frozen waterfalls in winter.

I've had a great time visiting Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre in the vicinity of the town of Golden. This wolf sanctuary and it's instructors, armed with their wealth of knowledge, give the centres' visitors a true depiction of these majestic and reclusive creatures.

Episode 1 - Ancient Ones
Description
Guy Clarkson takes off in his bush plane, a Piper Super Cub on a four-hour filmic journey along the great Divide. The Blackfoot Indians call it "Mistakis", the "Backbone of the World". Clarkson feels expecially responsible for two thousand kilometres of the Rocky Mountains, from Yellowstone National Park in the south to the Yukon in the north. For over twenty-five years he's lived and worked here as a mountain guide, pilot and cinematographer. Always curious and ever respectful of the forces of nature we do not always understand, Clarkson is determined to come to grips with what makes his mountains work--and why he fears they might one day soon go on strike. He first examines The Ancient Ones, the rock and ice and flora and fauna that, over eons, have adjusted without complaint to every fluctuation in the natural order of things. Then came the first human inhabitants to the mountains, bands of nomads who survived by adapting to every change. Ice Ages and volcanic eruptions challenged but did not destroy them. But since the arrival of Europeans, the damage to ecosystems and tribes alike has approached a point of no return. From the glaciers of the Columbia Ice Fields, to the wolf packs of Yellowstone National Park, to the sacred hunting grounds of the Blackfoot nations, Clarkson finds perspective in the wisdom of the experts and elders who know this region best.

Majestic and inspiring, the Rocky Mountains rise dramatically to divide the continent and define the past, present and future of North America. The Shining Mountains is a documentary series of four one-hour films, shot over four seasons, being produced for History Television and National Geographic. The series journeys through time, in a quest to understand and celebrate the unique ecological mosaic of the Rockies, giving the audience a sense of wonder and stewardship in its future. The approach is not linear. Weaving back and forth, from present to the past, Shining Mountains explores the natural wonders, cultural heritage and future of the Rockies in a well-paced and sometimes controversial composite of visions. Today's foremost thinkers and elders speak to their care and concerns for this extraordinary environment. Shining Mountains draws on narrative from eminent scientists, adventurers, aboriginal elders, resource managers, conservationists and developers, all of whom are under the spell of the Great Divide.
Episode 1 - Ancient Ones
Description
Guy Clarkson takes off in his bush plane, a Piper Super Cub on a four-hour filmic journey along the great Divide. The Blackfoot Indians call it "Mistakis", the "Backbone of the World". Clarkson feels expecially responsible for two thousand kilometres of the Rocky Mountains, from Yellowstone National Park in the south to the Yukon in the north. For over twenty-five years he's lived and worked here as a mountain guide, pilot and cinematographer. Always curious and ever respectful of the forces of nature we do not always understand, Clarkson is determined to come to grips with what makes his mountains work--and why he fears they might one day soon go on strike. He first examines The Ancient Ones, the rock and ice and flora and fauna that, over eons, have adjusted without complaint to every fluctuation in the natural order of things. Then came the first human inhabitants to the mountains, bands of nomads who survived by adapting to every change. Ice Ages and volcanic eruptions challenged but did not destroy them. But since the arrival of Europeans, the damage to ecosystems and tribes alike has approached a point of no return. From the glaciers of the Columbia Ice Fields, to the wolf packs of Yellowstone National Park, to the sacred hunting grounds of the Blackfoot nations, Clarkson finds perspective in the wisdom of the experts and elders who know this region best.

Tatanka is a living symbol of the Great Plains in the State of Wyoming and still embodies life in the Wild West of old. Hydrogen Infrastructure Testing and Research Facility: Mountain Driving Demonstration
Recently, researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory wanted to know, how well does NREL's hydrogen infrastructure support fueling multiple fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) for a day trip to the Rocky Mountains? The answer-great! NREL staff took FCEVs on a trip to demonstrate real-world performance and range in high-altitude conditions. To start the trip, drivers filled three cars at NREL's hydrogen fueling station. The cars made a 175-mile loop crossing two 11,000+ foot mountain passes on the way. Back at NREL, the cars were filled up with hydrogen in ~5 minutes and ready to go again. Learn more at www.nrel.gov/hydrogen.

The Rocky Mountains, ordinarily known as the Rockies, are a noteworthy mountain extend in western North America. The Rocky Mountains extend more than 3,000 miles (4,830 km) from the northernmost piece of British Columbia, in western Canada, to New Mexico, in the southwestern United States. Inside of the North American Cordillera, the Rockies are to some degree particular from the Pacific Coast Ranges and the Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada which all falsehood further toward the west.
This creature was reported to live in North America by the lumberjacks who talked of many strange beasts they sighted during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Snow Wasset was said to be 4 times larger than a wolverine and 40 times more active. It hibernates during the summer and warmest Winter when its fir turns green and it seeks a cranberry bush to sleep under. During the cold Winters, the Snow Wasset sheds its legs and slivers across the ground hunting for prey. It is highly carnivorous and spends most of its time underground. The Snow Wasset feels the tremors of burrowing or moving creatures above and ambushes them through the snow and drags them under to be eaten. It usually eats rabbits and rodents but when hungry it will eat wolves and creatures just as large. The skin of a Snow Wasset was once found on an Indian Canoe. This skin showed that it was from a large mammalian creature with no legs.
