제일 먼저 카이트베이를 찾았다. 알렉산드리아 도시 건설 초기에 만들어진 파로스 등대가 있던 곳이다. 카이트베이 앞 방파제엔 시민들이 나와 시원한 해풍을 즐기고 있었다. 시내는 30도가 훌쩍 넘는다. 성곽 안으로 들어가 봤다. 카이트베이는 15세기의 군사요새로 알렉산드리아 방어를 위해 지어졌단다. 관광객들이 무언가를 들여다보기에 가봤더니 식수저장용 우물이다. 예쁘게 지어진 건물이다. 이 요새의 최고 볼거리는 건축 당시의 이슬람식 타일. 몇 백 전 거라고는 믿어지지 않을 만큼 깨끗하다. 그런데 어디에도 파로스 등대에 대한 안내는 없다. 알렉산드리아의 최고 자랑거리라고 생각했는데 말이다. 좀 물어봐야겠다. 궁금증은 기념품 노점상에서 어느 정도 해소됐다. 파로스 등대는 높이 180m에 부속실만도 300여개. 세계 7대 불가사의 중 하나다. 알렉산더 대왕도 있고... 클레오파트라는 이집트 최고의 신인 ‘아문‘과 나란히 있다.

My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

칼릴리시장. 카이로의 대표적인 시장으로 칼릴리라는 고관 이름을 땄다. 좁은 골목 사이로 골동품 등 각종기념품 가게가 늘어서 있는데 고풍스런 건물들이 눈에 더 들어왔다. 미로같은 좁은 골목에 사람들의 살 냄새가 가득했다. 엘 피샤위다방. 그 골목 끝자락에서 만난 찻집이다. 200년 정도 됐다는 이 다방에 물 담배를 즐기려는 손님들이 가득한 건 그만한 이유가 있었다. 1988년 노벨 문학상을 수상한 (이집트 소설가) 나기브 마푸스가 이곳을 자주 찾았기 때문이다. 왕도 다녀가고 연예인도 들렀다. 물 담배 맛이 특별히 좋은 것도 아닌데... 그들과 똑같은 분위기를 느껴보고 싶었으리라
