The Great Pyramid of Giza (also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops) is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact. Egyptologists believe that the pyramid was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops in Greek) over a 10 to 20-year period concluding around 2560 BCE. Initially at 146.5 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. Originally, the Great Pyramid was covered by casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface; what is seen today is the underlying core structure. Some of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base. There have been varying scientific and alternative theories about the Great Pyramid's construction techniques. Most accepted construction hypotheses are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place.
There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The lowest chamber is cut into the bedrock upon which the pyramid was built and was unfinished. The so-called Queen's Chamber and King's Chamber are higher up within the pyramid structure. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only pyramid in Egypt known to contain both ascending and descending passages. The main part of the Giza complex is a setting of buildings that included two mortuary temples in honor of Khufu (one close to the pyramid and one near the Nile), three smaller pyramids for Khufu's wives, an even smaller "satellite" pyramid, a raised causeway connecting the two temples, and small mastaba tombs surrounding the pyramid for nobles.
It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh Khufu and was constructed over a 20 year period. Khufu's vizier, Hemon, or Hemiunu, is believed by some to be the architect of the Great Pyramid. It is thought that, at construction, the Great Pyramid was originally 280 Egyptian cubits tall, 146.5 metres (480.6 ft) but with erosion and absence of its pyramidion, its present height is 138.8 metres (455.4 ft). Each base side was 440 cubits, 230.4 metres (755.9 ft) long. The mass of the pyramid is estimated at 5.9 million tonnes. The volume, including an internal hillock, is roughly 2,500,000 cubic metres. Based on these estimates, building this in 20 years would involve installing approximately 800 tonnes of stone every day. Similarly, since it consists of an estimated 2.3 million blocks, completing the building in 20 years would involve moving an average of more than 12 of the blocks into place each hour, day and night. The first precision measurements of the pyramid were made by Egyptologist Sir Flinders Petrie in 1880--82 and published as The Pyramids and Temples of Gizeh. Almost all reports are based on his measurements. Many of the casing stones and inner chamber blocks of the Great Pyramid were fit together with extremely high precision. Based on measurements taken on the north eastern casing stones, the mean opening of the joints is only 0.5 millimetres wide (1/50th of an inch).

Giza (/ˈɡiːzə/; sometimes spelt Gizah or Jizah; Coptic: ⲅⲓⲍⲁ Giza; Egyptian Arabic: الجيزة el-Gīza), is the third-largest city in Egypt. It is located on the west bank of the Nile, some 20 km (12.43 mi) southwest of central Cairo. Giza is most famous as the location of the Giza Plateau: the site of some of the most impressive ancient monuments in the world, including a complex of ancient Egyptian royal mortuary and sacred structures, including the Great Sphinx, the Great Pyramid of Giza, and a number of other large pyramids and temples. Giza has always been a focal point in Egypt's history due to location in respect to Memphis, the ancient capital.

The Great Pyramid of Giza (also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops) is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. Egyptologists believe that the pyramid was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops in Greek) over a 10 to 20-year period concluding around 2560 BCE. Originally, the Great Pyramid was covered by casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface; what is seen today is the underlying core structure. Some of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base. There have been varying scientific and alternative theories about the Great Pyramid's construction techniques. Most accepted construction hypotheses are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place.
There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The lowest chamber is cut into the bedrock upon which the pyramid was built and was unfinished. The so-called Queen's Chamber and King's Chamber are higher up within the pyramid structure. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only pyramid in Egypt known to contain both ascending and descending passages. The main part of the Giza complex is a setting of buildings that included two mortuary temples in honor of Khufu (one close to the pyramid and one near the Nile), three smaller pyramids for Khufu's wives, an even smaller "satellite" pyramid, a raised causeway connecting the two temples, and small mastaba tombs surrounding the pyramid for nobles.
It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh Khufu and was constructed over a 20 year period. Khufu's vizier, Hemon, or Hemiunu, is believed by some to be the architect of the Great Pyramid. It is thought that, at construction, the Great Pyramid was originally 280 Egyptian cubits tall, 146.5 metres (480.6 ft) but with erosion and absence of its pyramidion, its present height is 138.8 metres (455.4 ft). Each base side was 440 cubits, 230.4 metres (755.9 ft) long. The mass of the pyramid is estimated at 5.9 million tonnes. The volume, including an internal hillock, is roughly 2,500,000 cubic metres. Based on these estimates, building this in 20 years would involve installing approximately 800 tonnes of stone every day. Similarly, since it consists of an estimated 2.3 million blocks, completing the building in 20 years would involve moving an average of more than 12 of the blocks into place each hour, day and night. The first precision measurements of the pyramid were made by Egyptologist Sir Flinders Petrie in 1880--82 and published as The Pyramids and Temples of Gizeh. Ruth and I spent 6 weeks in Egypt & Jordan. We hired a camel guide and toured the Giza Pyramids & Sphinx from early one morning until 10:30 at night. The Pyramids are the oldest of the "Seven Wonders of the World" and a must see place for any traveler. Constructed over a 20 year period around 2560 BC, the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure for over 3,800 years. I had an amazing time and met some amazing people. I saw the Great Pyramids of Giza in the Sahara Desert, went to the Cairo Museum, The Mohammed Ali Mosque, the Coptic church and even went to some of the pyramids and Tombs. IT WAS INSANE. How do you guys think the pyramids were built? It was crazy to see how in tune and intelligent our ancient ancestors were. It has always been a mystery, and it was cool to see all of these fascinating ancient buildings up close in real life. The people in Egypt are so friendly, once you say hello! I definitely stood out and got stared at a lot. That happens everywhere but especially here. I felt totally safe everywhere I went with my guide and had an amazing time!

My travel buddy and I first ventured to Sharm El Sheikh for some relaxation so I didn't really vlog there, however I did vlog my adventures in Cairo! -In Cairo, if you want to have an enjoyable experience touring all of the great sites, I recommend hiring a private tour guide or egyptologist. My friend suggested Rasha El Ashmawy who is an Egyptologist & private tour guide. Her website is www.egyptdailytours.com and her prices are very reasonable! In an air conditioned car from 8am-5pmish she only charged us $90 per person and this includes entrance fees to every place she took us. We went to the Great Pyramids of Giza, The Sphinx, The Egyptian Museum (Unfortunately no photos or videos allowed), Cairo Citadel, Mosque of Muhammad Ali and Khan al Khalili Bazaar. Great price if you ask me! And we were chauffeured in a private van with A/C! Rasha was absolutely fabulous, very knowledgable and very sweet. I definitely recommend her! You will not be disappointed! She also offers airport transfer!
-Egyptian tourism is WAY down, down 90% since the Egyptian Revolution. Try to be generous when you can but sometimes it can get rather annoying. For example, at the Pyramids, buyers will try everything they can to get you to buy a souvenir. It's a bit annoying but with tourism so down, this is their way of living and they CAN get a bit aggressive. Best thing to do is just to ignore and keep walking. Don't even say "No Thank You". Just simply ignore.
-Don't take pictures of military personnel, I accidentally got in trouble because an officer thought I was taking a video of his police car when in reality I was taking video of the building behind it. But wharves understandable.
-Don't ride a camel in front of the pyramids. You will get ripped of tremendously. Instead, take a $5 camel ride further away from the pyramids on the plateau. You still get great views of the pyramids!
-Buy souvenirs at Khan el Khalili but ALWAYS bargain and try to bring the price down. Most speak several languages so try your best to bring down the price!
-If you want to go inside Mosque of Muhammad Ali you can, however if you're not dressed appropriately you will be given an abaya for a small fee of about $1.
-Stay hydrated! It is HOT! Luckily there are beverage vendors everywhere so keep cash in hand.
-Cairo is NOISY! I've never heard so much noise in my life. Be prepared for the honking and the crazy driving! We stayed at the Conrad Cairo (Beautiful hotel that I definitely recommend!) and although we were at the 19th floor with a Nile view, we could STILL hear the honking so bring earplugs if you're easily annoyed!
-Egyptian food is AMAZING! Be sure to check out Abou Tarek for some authentic egyptian Koshary OR head on over to my favorite restaurant located in Zamalek, Abou El Sid. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS and craving it at this second!

Some of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base. There have been varying scientific and alternative theories about the Great Pyramid construction techniques. Most accepted construction hypotheses are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place.
There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The lowest chamber is cut into the bedrock upon which the pyramid was built and was unfinished. The so-called Queen's Chamber and King's Chamber are higher up within the pyramid structure. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only pyramid in Egypt known to contain both ascending and descending passages. The main part of the Giza complex is a setting of buildings that included two mortuary temples in honour of Khufu (one close to the pyramid and one near the Nile), three smaller pyramids for Khufu's wives, an even smaller "satellite" pyramid, a raised causeway connecting the two temples, and small mastaba tombs surrounding the pyramid for nobles.

The main part of the Giza complex is a setting of buildings that included two mortuary temples in honour of Khufu (one close to the pyramid and one near the Nile), three smaller pyramids for Khufu's wives, an even smaller "satellite" pyramid, a raised causeway connecting the two temples, and small mastaba tombs surrounding the pyramid for nobles.

Not surprisingly, for today's visitor, the beauty is seeing those centuries unfold in layers, often juxtaposed into modern-day living.
The original ancient city was actually Memphis, now 24km (15 miles) southwest of Cairo, founded in 2,000 BC and ruled by King Menes who united Upper and Lower Egypt. Fustat, as 'modern-day' Cairo was known, was founded some 3,000 years later and was one of the world's greatest, and largest cities and home to Egypt's first mosque.
There embarked a period of huge construction of some of the city's most prominent landmarks. The Fatimids established the Al-Azhar mosque (one of the world's oldest Islamic universities) located in Islamic Cairo, the medieval quarter also home to the sprawling market streets of Khan el-Khalili.
Once the Mamaluk Sultanate was captured by the Ottoman Empire, they shifted most of the trading back to Constantinople and Cairo became little more than a provincial town. The mkedieval curse, the Black Death, struck the city countless times reducing the population by hundreds of thousands. Cairo's place on the spice route was all but diminished.
The Ottomans were soon unseated by Napoleonic troops who occupied Cairo in the late 18th century, later falling to British troops.
Muhammad Ali Pasha was considered to be the founder of modern Egypt, with social and economic reforms and huge construction in the early 19th century. His grandson Ismail Pasha continued that modernization process, inspired by the broad boulevards of Paris, and his legacy can still be seen around today's Downtown Cairo.
Debt let to British occupation lasting well into the 20th century, but huge demonstrations led to Egypt's independence declared in 1922 and Sultan Ahmad Fuad became King Fuad I. His son King Farouk I later married Queen Farida Zulficar.
Since World War II, Cairo's development has been intense, its huge and fast-growing population leading to its current status as the largest city in Africa and the Muslim world.

Ruth and I spent 6 weeks in Egypt & Jordan. We hired a camel guide and toured the Giza Pyramids & Sphinx from early one morning until 10:30 at night. The Pyramids are the oldest of the "Seven Wonders of the World" and a must see place for any traveler. Constructed over a 20 year period around 2560 BC, the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure for over 3,800 years. One thing that upset me was they have built a golf course on the north side of this historic area (anywhere but here).
