After the preaching of Saint Mark in Alexandria, the Coptic Orthodox Church carries the memory of a prestigious civilization, that of ancient Egypt. Accompanied by that aura of mysticism, the music of the Coptic rite has long preoccupied orientalists and other travelers, convinced that this millennia musical tradition was born from the womb of Pharaonic Egypt and remained unchanged for centuries. This album offers a panorama of solemn hymns sung at Sunday Mass and at major festivals, usually Coptic liturgical language derived from ancient Egyptian. These are prayers or psalms completed long and learned vocalizations and can be accompanied by the beat of a triangle and shock and friction alternating a pair of cymbals to galvanize singers. As in many other Eastern Churches, the Coptic liturgy is almost entirely sung by the priest, deacons and the cantor. The first singer declared guarantor of Coptic musical tradition was Mikhail Girgis El-Batanuni (1873-1957). The choir recorded in this disc is in this lineage. Its leader, Professor Michael Ghattas who runs music education at the Institute of Coptic Studies, considers it essential to convey an unwavering compliance with these liturgical hymns. He has gathered seminarians, priests, deacons and cantors in one chorus happens to the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo during major celebrations officiated by Pope Tawadros itself.
