Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra presents Chinese music from 5,000 years of civilization. This East-West orchestra performs ancient melodies, blending Chinese instruments like the erhu and pipa with a grand Western symphony orchestra.
Chinese music and classical music are united in this one-of-a-kind performance. Alongside original Shen Yun favorites, the concert features classical music masterpieces like Antonín Dvořák's Slavonic Dance, Camille Saint-Saëns' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, and Johannes Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5.
The concert also features Shen Yun's celebrated bel canto singers and erhu performances. This fall, the orchestra will perform at Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, Kennedy Center Concert Hall, Chicago Symphony Center, and Roy Thompson Hall, as well as 13 concert halls in Asia.
It’s East-West music like never before. Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra is the first to successfully blend the delicate beauty of ancient Chinese instruments with the grandeur and power of the Western symphony orchestra. Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra is part of the nonprofit organization Shen Yun Performing Arts and is based in New York.

The Stanford Symphony Orchestra presents a program of late romantic music by two Jewish composers: Gustav Mahler and Ernest Bloch. Both Mahler and Bloch experienced cultural alienation and exile throughout their lives, as Jews but also as Austrian and Swiss nationals. Both ultimately moved from Europe to the United States. And both wrote richly complex and expressive music for spectacular orchestral forces. Yet Mahler and Bloch chose divergent paths to express Jewish identity in art and life. Mahler, an assimilated artist living in Vienna, converted to Catholicism to secure his conducting post with the State Opera, while Bloch composed music in the service of an idealized Jewish nation. From Mahler’s use of Klezmer interjections to Bloch’s representation of cantor-sung prayer, this program brings together varied and evocative Jewish voices at the turn of the century.

An orchestra (/ˈɔːrkᵻstrə/ or US /ˈɔːrˌkɛstrə/; Italian: [orˈkɛstra]) is a large instrumental ensemble used in classical music that contains sections of string (violin, viola, cello and double bass), brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. Other instruments such as the piano and celesta may sometimes be grouped into a fifth section such as a keyboard section or may stand alone, as may the concert harp and, for 20th and 21st century compositions, electric and electronic instruments. The term orchestra derives from the Greek ὀρχήστρα, the name for the area in front of an ancient Greek stage reserved for the Greek chorus. The orchestra grew by accretion throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, but changed very little in composition during the course of the 20th century.

The Stanford Symphony Orchestra presents a program of late romantic music by two Jewish composers: Gustav Mahler and Ernest Bloch. Both Mahler and Bloch experienced cultural alienation and exile throughout their lives, as Jews but also as Austrian and Swiss nationals. Both ultimately moved from Europe to the United States. And both wrote richly complex and expressive music for spectacular orchestral forces. Yet Mahler and Bloch chose divergent paths to express Jewish identity in art and life. Mahler, an assimilated artist living in Vienna, converted to Catholicism to secure his conducting post with the State Opera, while Bloch composed music in the service of an idealized Jewish nation. From Mahler’s use of Klezmer interjections to Bloch’s representation of cantor-sung prayer, this program brings together varied and evocative Jewish voices at the turn of the century.
