Birmingham Airport has huge potential and the ability to open up access to key international markets for thousands of the region’s businesses, and will be significantly bolstered by HS2 bringing 35 million people within two hours’ travel.
John Clancy, leader of Birmingham city council,: “The government has made a decision on resolving congestion at London’s airports. As a region, we must now develop our own plans for Birmingham Airport and HS2, to connect the West Midlands to global opportunities.
“In ten years’ time, Birmingham is going to be the first and only UK airport with a high speed train service on the doorstep, and travel times linking Birmingham and London will be around 40 minutes.

High Speed 2
High Speed 2 (HS2) is a planned high-speed railway in the United Kingdom linking London, Birmingham, the East Midlands, Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester. It would be the second high-speed rail line in Britain, the first being the High Speed 1 line connecting London to the Channel Tunnel. The line is proposed to be built in a "Y" configuration in two phases, with construction work on the first phase set to begin in 2017, reach Birmingham by 2026, Crewe by 2027 and be completed in 2033.
Carlisle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Newcastle, Preston and York will be linked to the network by HS2 trains running over existing, slower, tracks or edge-of-town HS2 stations.
Although Parliament has approved the first two phases of construction, precise details of the plan and route have not been formalised, and are still open to negotiation and change. For example, the spur to Heathrow airport was dropped from phases one and two in March 2015, while the Crewe Hub has been added to the scheme. In November 2015, Transport for the North (TfN) proposed a four-track trans-Pennine railway line, that would link with the HS2 line to London, and a new Liverpool-Manchester airport-Manchester railway line also linked to HS2. A feasibility study of the west to east rail line and its branches into HS2 will be published in March 2016.

Birmingham Airport
Birmingham Airport (IATA: BHX, ICAO: EGBB), formerly Birmingham International Airport is an international airport located 5.5 nautical miles (10.2 km; 6.3 mi) east southeast of Birmingham city centre, at Bickenhill in Solihull, Birmingham, England. The airport is a base for Flybe, Monarch, Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways.
The airport offers both domestic flights within the UK, and international flights to destinations in Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, North America and the Caribbean. Passenger throughput in 2015 was about 10.2 million, making Birmingham the seventh busiest UK airport. However, the airport is the sixth in terms of international passengers.
Birmingham has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P451) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction.
Location
Birmingham Airport is 5.5 NM (10.2 km; 6.3 mi) east-south-east of Birmingham city centre, in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull. It is bordered by the National Exhibition Centre to the east, Marston Green to the north, Sheldon to the west, and the village of Bickenhill to the south.

Sir Howard Davies, chairman of the Airports Commission, says the HS2 high speed rail line boosts the case for a second runway at Birmingham Airport.
Birmingham Airport has huge potential and the ability to open up access to key international markets for thousands of the region’s businesses, and will be significantly bolstered by HS2 bringing 35 million people within two hours’ travel.
John Clancy, leader of Birmingham city council,: “The government has made a decision on resolving congestion at London’s airports. As a region, we must now develop our own plans for Birmingham Airport and HS2, to connect the West Midlands to global opportunities.
“In ten years’ time, Birmingham is going to be the first and only UK airport with a high speed train service on the doorstep, and travel times linking Birmingham and London will be around 40 minutes.

"By integrating the HS2 interchange station into the airport, aligning it with runway 2 and ensuring it is linked to the rest of the airport, road and rail infrastructure," she says "we can offer a transformative solution for both the Midlands and the rest of the country."
Andy Street, Conservative candidate to be the first West Midlands mayor said: Businesses across the region are very clear on their desire for an expanded Birmingham airport.
Labour mayoral candidate Sion Simon supports an expanded Birmingham Airport.
