Albufeira (Portuguese pronunciation: [aɫβuˈfejɾɐ]) is a city, seat and municipality in the district of Faro, in the southernmost Portuguese region of the Algarve. The municipality population in 2011 was 40,828, in an area of 140.66 km². The city proper had a population of 13,646 in 2001. It is 250 kilometres (160 mi) from Lisbon, and is within close proximity of Paderne Castle. Lagos is located 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the west, and Faro 45 kilometres (28 mi) to the south-east. A tourist destination (due to its coastal conditions), Albufeira expands to approximately 300,000 residents during the summer and during New Year celebrations, owing to the number of hotels and lodgings in the district, that includes marina facilities, golf courses, restaurants and bar for the annual flood of visitors.
It is unclear when the first settlements specifically formed in the region of Albufeira, although scientific research suggest origins during the pre-historic epoch, and that the town of Albufeira formed as an out-port of the maritime fishery. The primitive settlement was occupied by the Romans, named it Baltum, introducing a centralized administrative structure and developing intense agricultural activities along with commerce. The Romans constructed aqueducts, roads and bridges, of which parts still remain.

Hello travellers. During our adventure in Portugal a freak electrical thunderstorm hit the Algarve region of Portugal, it’s southern riviera on Nov 1, 2015. The resulting flooding devastated the coastline, and one of the hardest hit places was the town of Albufeira. One of the prettiest areas in the Algarve, Albufeira is only a few hours drive or train ride from Lisbon, the capital. Tourists stream to the Algarve during the summer, but also well into the fall and many vacationers spend their winters here. We take time out from a leisurely stay in the Algarve to show you the flood damage and talk to people in Albufeira about how this disaster has affected them. Please donate to any local organization to help support the rebuilding of Albufeira. Thank you for your support. If you like wh...

Portugal. The 5 and half thousand square meters large southern part of the once proud colonial empire is Algarve, bathing all year in the sun. From the hilltops, moor forts look down on to the surroundings. In the old towns narrow roads lead up to the magnificent Manuel-style temples. The buildings are ornamented by Azulejos, moor painted tiles. The monuments and statues summon adventurers and explorers: Magellan and Vasco De Gama. The country is full of fishing villages, palm trees, vine arbours, olive tree orchards, and orange gardens. The Playa de Rocha and the other sandy beaches are surrounded by large cliffs, stone archs and lagoons. On the hill of Moniche we travel among pine trees and para oaks.
