Lester William Polsfuss (June 9, 1915 – August 12, 2009), known as Les Paul, was an American jazz, country, and blues guitarist, songwriter, luthier, and inventor. He was one of the pioneers of the solid-body electric guitar, which made the sound of rock and roll possible. Paul taught himself how to play guitar and while he is mainly known for rock music, he had an early career in country music. He is credited with many recording innovations. Although he was not the first to use the technique, his early experiments with overdubbing (also known as sound on sound),delay effects such as tape delay, phasing effects and multitrack recording were among the first to attract widespread attention.
His innovative talents extended into his playing style, including licks, trills, chording sequences, fretting techniques and timing, which set him apart from his contemporaries and inspired many guitarists of the present day. He recorded with his wife Mary Ford in the 1950s, and they sold millions of records.
Joseph Fidler "Joe" Walsh (born November 20, 1947) is an American singer, songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Walsh has been a member of five successful rock bands: James Gang, Barnstorm, the Eagles, The Party Boys, and Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. In the 1990s, he was also a member of the short-lived supergroup The Best. He has also experienced success both as a solo artist and prolific session musician, being featured on a wide array of other artists' recordings. In 2011, Rolling Stone placed Walsh at the number 54 spot on its list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."
In the middle 1960s, after attending Kent State University, Walsh played with several local Ohio-based bands before reaching a national audience as a member of the James Gang, whose hit song "Funk #49" highlighted Walsh's skill as both a guitarist and vocalist. After the James Gang broke up in 1972, Walsh formed a band, Barnstorm, with Joe Vitale, a college friend of Walsh's from Ohio, and Kenny Passarelli, a bassist from Colorado, where Walsh had settled as his home after leaving Ohio. While the band would stay together for three albums over three years, their works were marketed as Walsh solo projects. The last Barnstorm album, 1974's So What contained significant guest contributions from several members of the Eagles, a group that had recently hired Walsh's producer, Bill Szymczyk.

The popular hit-making couple string three songs together in one memorable performance: "I Really Don't Want to Know", "There's no Place Like Home", and "Tiger Rag". This comes from their appearance on the public domain TV series, "The Colgate Comedy Hour", originally aired on March 21, 1954. That variety show actually starred Abbott & Costello, and featured various acts between skits. Les Paul & Mary Ford are awesome! And they're both legends! In the long run, Les fared better than Mary in commercial success. It's a real shame they broke up. Les was an innovative guitarist who ultimately had a guitar named after him (the Gibson Les Paul)! Mary was also an excellent guitarist. And she was an OUTSTANDING singer! Les Paul and Mary Ford had a fun onstage presence that combined humor...

A VERY rare live television performance by Les Paul and Mary Ford. Most musical performances on TV in the 1950's were Milli Vanilli-esque lip-synched affairs so this is a real gem. Les and Mary perform "There's No Place Like Home" with some classic add libbing, especially from Les. Mary Ford was a fine guitarist in her own right and that fact is ably demonstrated here. Watch for when Les goes wild and breaks his high E string. Mary is about to punish him when... Well, watch the video. And, dig those gorgeous 1952 Gibson Les Paul guitars, heavily customized by the master himself. Trivia: Les shattered and almost lost his right arm in a 1948 car crash. Les had the doctors set his elbow at an angle so he could still play guitar but he could never again fully extend his right arm.

Directed by Paraic MacIntyre, “Tom Murphy’s extraordinary play” (Peter Crawley, Irish Times), centres around Mommo, who tells over and over again a story she never finishes of how the town came to be known as Bailegangaire, the town without laughter. Mommo is attended by her two granddaughters, Mary and Dolly. The younger women yearn to be free of the past in order to make a new beginning, and Mary comes to believe that to do so the story of Bailegangaire has to be concluded.

Mormon Stories #638: Dr. Thomas Murphy on Anthropology and Book of Mormon / Lamanite DNA Pt. 1
In a culture in which the denial of death expresses itself in many distorted forms (anti-aging fetishism, celebrity worship, and unfettered consumerism), those who transition to the status of “dying” find themselves in an uncomfortable social location. We necessarily process the act of death through ritualistic responses of coming together, but the dying period before death is much less recognized. In this talk, I will focus on those who are cognitively aware of their own imminent death either because they have received a terminal diagnosis, or have had a rapid decline in health such that they and others around them recognize that death is near. Interestingly, sociology has little to say on the act of dying, and it is one of my purposes to propose a general framework for bridging this gap...
Another lecture in IHMC's award winning lecture series. http://www.ihmc.us Once described "as hell with the lid off", in 2009 the City of Pittsburgh was ranked first by the "Economist" and in 2010 as the most livable US city by "Forbes". How does a city move over thirty years from being one of the most environmentally degraded places— its air, water and land polluted— to a city recognized for its livability, clean environment, green architecture and diverse employment opportunities? Pittsburgh was challenged to redefine itself to survive much earlier than many cities; but now, every city needs to metamorphose to succeed. The rules are changing. The forces of global trade, energy needs, climate change, technology innovation, infrastructure needs and demographics will redefine the critical ...

On Wednesday, December 5th, 2012, former Pittsburgh mayor Tom Murphy made his first appearance in Pittsburgh's City-County Building since finishing his final term in 2006. Murphy discussed his involvement in transforming Pittsburgh's economy and riverfronts during his time in office, in addition to providing expert testimony regarding a proposed redevelopment project along the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh's Strip District neighborhood. Murphy's advice to Council centered on the principle that any development along Pittsburgh's riverfront should be "world class." Murphy went on to argue that Pittsburgh's riverfronts should be planned and developed with particular attention paid to notions of connectivity and public riverfront accessibility.
