Alor Setar, (Jawi: الور ستار; formerly Alor Star from 2004-2008[2]) is the state capital of Kedah, Malaysia; which is the second largest city in the state after Sungai Petani, Kedah (taking over the position in 2010); important cities in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The city is home to the Central State Administration Centre and Administrative Centre Kota Setar District in the City of Muadzam Shah and Kedah the royal town of Bandar Anak Bukit.
Alor Setar is also a unique city centre for Malaysia. This is because the government sector and schools in Alor Setar operates from Sunday to Thursday every week,which is different from neighbouring states.
Its location along the main travel route from Malaysia to Thailand has long made it a major transportation hub in the northern Malay Peninsula. At present, the city covers a land area of 666 km2, which is occupied by more than 300,000 inhabitants (as per the 2010 census). At the local government level, Alor Setar is administered by the Alor Setar City Council.
The city is served by the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, which began operations in 2006. The airport is currently not serviced by any commercial international flights; however, during the Haj season, there are special flights available for Muslim pilgrims journeying to Saudi Arabia to perform the Haj. In terms of land routes, the city is connected to other parts of Peninsular Malaysia by the North-South Expressway, the Shahab Perdana Bus Station and the Alor Setar railway station. The city also boasts the Kuala Kedah Jetty, which is served by ferries linking the city with the popular resort island of Langkawi.

ALOR SETAR September 19, 2014 - Seorang lelaki dipercayai kurang siuman ditahan polis apabila mengamuk menggunakan kayu besbol di hadapan sebuah hotel di Jalan Pintu Sepuluh di sini, hari ini. Ada juga laporan yang mengatakan lelaki tersebut juga mengacahkan pisau.
Suspek berusia lingkungan 40-an itu ditahan di hadapan hotel terbabit selepas dikejar beberapa kilometer.
Ketua Polis Daerah Kota Setar, Asisten Komisioner Adzaman Mohd Jan berkata, pihaknya menerima aduan orang awam kira-kira jam 9.25 pagi memaklumkan terdapat seorang lelaki sedang mengamuk di sebuah kedai makan, di sini.
Menurutnya, sebaik anggota polis tiba di lokasi kejadian, suspek cuba melarikan diri dengan menaiki sebuah kereta mewah yang dipandu secara agresif melalui kawasan Jalan Suka Menanti, Jalan Gangsa dan Jalan Putra.
“Isteri suspek yang berada dalam kenderaan itu kemudian menghubungi polis memaklumkan suaminya kurang siuman sebelum suspek memberhentikan kenderaan di hadapan sebuah hotel.
“Anggota polis kemudian memujuk suspek keluar dari kenderaan dan menyerah diri namun bertindak agresif dengan mengambil sebatang besi dan menyerang,” katanya.
Adzaman berkata, suspek yang tidak berpakaian itu kemudian berjaya ditahan kira-kira jam 12 tengah hari dan dibawa ke Hospital Psikiatri Bakar Bata, di sini, untuk pemeriksaan.
Beliau berkata, kes itu diserahkan kepada hospital untuk tindakan lanjut.

Alor Setar, known as Alor Star between 2004 and 2008, is the state capital of Kedah, Malaysia, and Kota Setar District's Administrative Centre. It is also a distribution center for manufacturing and agricultural products such as paddy, and the royal seat of the Kedah state since the establishment of this city. The city, which has an urban population of approximately more than 300,000, is one of the region’s oldest cities.
It is located 93 kilometers north of Butterworth, Penang and 45 km south of the Thai border.
It is also the birthplace of two Prime Ministers, YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia's first Prime Minister, and Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister. Alor Setar was granted city status on 21 December 2003.
Alor Setar was founded in 1735 by Kedah’s 19th Ruler, Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin II and is the state’s eighth administrative centre since the establishment of the Kedah Sultanate in 1136. The earlier administrative centres were located in Kota Bukit Meriam, Kota Sungai Emas, Kota Siputeh, Kota Naga, Kota Sena, Kota Indera Kayangan and Kota Bukit Pinang.

Pelajar sekolah sains, Liceo Sciemtifico Statale Democrito di Rome, Itali, Chantal Viola, 17, yang manis bertudung menebar roti canai merupakan salah seorang pelajar pertukaran sejak Julai lalu. MASJID ZAHIR ALOR SETAR CECAH 100 TAHUN [15 OKT 2015]
Masjid Zahir di Alor Setar, Kedah, hari ini mencecah usia 100 tahun, berdasarkan kepada tarikh perasmiannya iaitu pada Jumaat 15 Oktober 1915 oleh almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Shah. Masjid yang tersenarai antara 10 masjid tercantik di dunia itu, berada pada kedudukan keempat selepas Masjidil Haram, Mekah; Masjid Nawabi, Madinah dan Masjid Al-Aqsa di Baitulmaqdis. FAKHRUL RAZI ISMAIL meninjau keunikan masjid yang menjadi lambang kemasyhuran Islam di Kedah itu.

The city is home to the Central State Administration Centre and Administrative Centre Kota Setar District in the City of Muadzam Shah and Kedah the royal town of Bandar Anak Bukit.
Alor Setar is also a unique city centre for Malaysia. This is because the government sector and schools in Alor Setar operates from Sunday to Thursday every week,which is different from neighbouring states.
Its location along the main travel route from Malaysia to Thailand has long made it a major transportation hub in the northern Malay Peninsula. At present, the city covers a land area of 666 km2, which is occupied by more than 300,000 inhabitants (as per the 2010 census). At the local government level, Alor Setar is administered by the Alor Setar City Council.
The city is served by the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, which began operations in 2006. The airport is currently not serviced by any commercial international flights; however, during the Haj season, there are special flights available for Muslim pilgrims journeying to Saudi Arabia to perform the Haj. In terms of land routes, the city is connected to other parts of Peninsular Malaysia by the North-South Expressway, the Shahab Perdana Bus Station and the Alor Setar railway station. The city also boasts the Kuala Kedah Jetty, which is served by ferries linking the city with the popular resort island of Langkawi.

ALOR SETAR September 19, 2014 - Seorang lelaki dipercayai kurang siuman ditahan polis apabila mengamuk menggunakan kayu besbol di hadapan sebuah hotel di Jalan Pintu Sepuluh di sini, hari ini. Ada juga laporan yang mengatakan lelaki tersebut juga mengacahkan pisau.
Suspek berusia lingkungan 40-an itu ditahan di hadapan hotel terbabit selepas dikejar beberapa kilometer.
Ketua Polis Daerah Kota Setar, Asisten Komisioner Adzaman Mohd Jan berkata, pihaknya menerima aduan orang awam kira-kira jam 9.25 pagi memaklumkan terdapat seorang lelaki sedang mengamuk di sebuah kedai makan, di sini.
Menurutnya, sebaik anggota polis tiba di lokasi kejadian, suspek cuba melarikan diri dengan menaiki sebuah kereta mewah yang dipandu secara agresif melalui kawasan Jalan Suka Menanti, Jalan Gangsa dan Jalan Putra.
“Isteri suspek yang berada dalam kenderaan itu kemudian menghubungi polis memaklumkan suaminya kurang siuman sebelum suspek memberhentikan kenderaan di hadapan sebuah hotel.
“Anggota polis kemudian memujuk suspek keluar dari kenderaan dan menyerah diri namun bertindak agresif dengan mengambil sebatang besi dan menyerang,” katanya.
Adzaman berkata, suspek yang tidak berpakaian itu kemudian berjaya ditahan kira-kira jam 12 tengah hari dan dibawa ke Hospital Psikiatri Bakar Bata, di sini, untuk pemeriksaan.
Beliau berkata, kes itu diserahkan kepada hospital untuk tindakan lanjut.
