Rashid Khan (born 1 July 1966) is an Indian classical musician in the Hindustani music tradition. He belongs to the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, and is the great-grandson of gharana founder Inayat Hussain Khan. He is married to Joyeeta Bose, from the family of Acharya Jagdish Chandra Bose.
In a story told in several versions, it appears that Pandit Bhimsen Joshi said at one point, that Rashid Khan was the "assurance for the future of Indian vocal music". He was awarded the Padma Shri, as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006.Born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh. He received his initial training from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan (1909--1993). He is also the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.
As a child he had little interest in music. His uncle Ghulam Mustafa Khan was among the first to note his musical talents, and for some time trained him in Mumbai.However, he received his main training from Nissar Hussain Khan, initially at his house in Badayun. A strict disciplinarian, Nissar Hussain Khan would insist on voice training (sur sAdhanA) from four in the morning, and make Rashid practice one note of the scale for hours on end. A whole day would be spent on practising just a single note. Although Rashid detested these lessons as a child, but the disciplined training shows in his easy mastery of taan (arpeggios) and layakaari today. It was not until he was 18 that Rashid began to truly enjoy his musical training.
Rashid Khan gave his first concert at age eleven, and the following year, 1978, he performed at an ITC concert in Delhi. In April 1980, when Nissar Hussain Khan moved to the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA), Calcutta, Rashid Khan also joined the academy at the age of 14. By 1994, he was acknowledged as a musician (a formal process) at the academy.
The Rampur-Sahaswan gayaki (style of singing) is closely related to the Gwalior gharana, which features medium-slow tempos, a full-throated voice and intricate rhythmic play. Rashid Khan includes the slow elaboration in his vilambit khayals in the manner of his maternal grand-uncle and also developed exceptional expertise in the use of sargams and sargam taankari (play on the scale). He is influenced with the style of Ustad Amir Khan and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi .
He is also a master of the tarana like his guru but sings them in his own manner, preferring the khayal style rather than the instrumental stroke-based style for which Nissar Hussain was famous. There is no imitation of instrumental tone. His mastery of all aspects tonal variations, dynamics and timbre adjustment leave very little to be desired in the realm of voice culture.
His renderings stand out for the emotional overtones in his melodic elaboration. He says: "The emotional content may be in the alaap, sometimes while singing the bandish, or while giving expression to the meaning of the lyrics. This brings a touch of modernity to his style, as compared to the older maestros, who placed greater emphasis on impressive technique and skillful execution of difficult passages.
Rashid Khan has also experimented with fusing pure Hindustani music with lighter musical genres, e.g. in the Sufi fusion recording Naina Piya Se (songs of Amir Khusro), or in experimental concerts with western instrumentalist Louis Banks. He has also performed jugalbandis, along with sitarist Shahid Parvez and others.

Ustad Rashid Khan is one of the most notable contemporary Hindustani classical Vocalists. Ustad Rashid Khan has made his name shine along with the legendary Hindustani Classical Music veterans. Pt. Bhimsen Joshi once pointed out that with Contemporary singers like Rashid Khan the future of Hindustani Classical music is quite secure.
Ustaad Rashid Khan was born in a musical family. He hails from the famous Rampur Sahaswan Khayal Gharana. Rashid khan is the grandson of legendary Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan sahib who happened to be the founder of the Rampur Sahaswan Khayal Gharana. Though Rashid as a child was under the tutelage of his maternal uncle Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan was a strict disciplinarian and put young Rashid through rigid training. This strict training though was not very enjoyable for young Rashid but payed off in building the unique Taankari and laykari that Ustad Rashid Khan is now famous for.
This particular album LIVE AT SUNNY TOWERS VOL 2 is a very rare collection of ragas done by Ustad Rashid Khan Live. Here he has sang three ragas namely Raag Ragesri, Raag Chhayanat, and Raag Desh. Two of these Ragas he has shown in its full blossom and one he has just showcased. Ustad Rashid khan is quite uniquely famous for his Kheyals in Vilambit. Raag Ragesri he performs in an elaborate manner. Ragesri is a raag from the Khamaj Thaat. Ustaad Rashid Khan shows his mastery over time signatures and melody through this Raag. The linear movement of Hindustani Classical music is showcased brilliantly in this track through the barytone of Ustad Rashid Khan. This rare recording of a private concert of Ustad Rashid Khan is any collector's priced possession.

This album is a rare one as this is a tribute album for Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. In this particular album Ustad Rashid Khan explores the beautiful Raga Shuddha Kalyan. Kaḷyāṇ or Kaḷyāṇī, alternatively called Yaman, is a melakarta rāga (parent musical scale) in the Carnatic music, and is also an important raga in Hindustani music tradition. Its Western equivalent is the Lydian mode. This was a very favourite Raga of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and that might be one of the reasons why Ustad Rashid Khan chose this raga to pay his homage. This Raga of the first quarter of night is most beautifully explored by ustadji in this album. This is one great treasure to be cherished forever.

Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi (
pronunciation ); 4 February 1922 – 24 January 2011) was an Indian vocalist from Karnataka in the Hindustani classical tradition. He is known for the khayal form of singing, as well as for his popular renditions of devotional music (bhajans and abhangs).
In 1998, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, the highest honour conferred by Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama. Subsequently, he received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in 2009.
Early life
Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi was born in a town called Ron, in the erstwhile Dharwad (today Gadag) district of Karnataka on 4 February 1922 to Gururaj Joshi (who had authored a Kannada-English dictionary) and Godavaribai, a home-maker. Bhimsen was the eldest among 16 siblings. He lost his mother at a young age and was raised by his stepmother.
As a child, Bhimsen was fascinated with music and musical instruments like the Harmonium and Tanpura and would often follow processions accompanied by music bands. This exercise often tired him and he would curl up somewhere and sleep, forcing his parents to go to the police after efforts to trace him failed. Fed up, his father Gururajacharya Joshi come up with the solution, writing "Joshi mastarancha mulga" (son of teacher Joshi) on Bhimsen's shirts. This worked and those who found the boy sleeping would safely deposit him back to his house.

Plot: India in the new millennium is faced with corruption, unemployment, crime, and all-round insecurity. Many want to travel abroad to better their lives. Rashid Khan is an individual who assists them, albeit illegally, by taking huge amounts, and then transporting them to their choice of destinations, which in this case is Britain. A group of about 200 people use their lives' savings and pay Rashid, chief amongst them are dishonored Indian Army Officer Aman Kumar Sahadev; Banwari and his nephew, Prem, from Uttar Pradesh; Rajnam Venkateshwaram from Tamil Nadu; Santokh Singh from Punjab; Prof. Proveer Chatterjee from Kolkata, while others hail from Gujarat, Mumbai, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu, and also include people from Bangla Desh and Pakistan. This trip turns out to be nightmare as their presence is intercepted and they go into hiding and face hunger amongst other problems. They must now leave to board a ship, which encounters a storm, capsizes, killing hundreds, and leaving only a handful. They land on shore, and are met with Aman's ex-girlfriend, Niharika, who is now married to a man she does not love. Her father is a scientist who is in possession of plutonium. He gets killed, and a dying Niharika, who has been fatally shot, gives the plutonium to Aman. They travel onto Afghanistan where they are met by their guide, Palvisha, who also takes charge of the plutonium so that she can hand it over to the Northern Alliance who want to rule Afghanistan. Palvisha soon finds out that the Northern Alliance is up to no good, takes possession of the plutonium and travels to Kazakhstan, where they meet their new guide, Sameer, who decides to assist them for a huge fee. Plot: Vijay and Rajni have been childhood sweethearts in a small town called Rajgarh. They did separate for a few years when Rajni and her maternal grandma, Leela, went to live in Calcutta. Kundan's mom creates all kinds of misunderstandings between Vijay and Rajni, and Vijay's conduct, especially gambling, lying, and telling tall stories, does not help. Then Vijay is arrested by the police and held in jail. When he is discharged, he swears to turn his life around and be worthy of Rajni, leaves Rajgarh, finds employment in Durgapur as a truck driver. When he returns home he finds that Rajni and Leela have re-located to Calcutta where Rajni is to be married to a man named Ravi Shankar. A heartbroken Vijay goes to Calcutta to locate Rajni, but is unable to locate her. He falls into bad company, takes to alcohol, and then one day one of his new-found friends' abducts a woman - who turns out to be Rajni. When Vijay and Rajni come face to face there is nothing but hatred between them. Rajni walks out of Vijay's life. When they meet again in Dhanbad, Rajni is married to Ravi Shankar, who lives there with his sister, Manju. Watch what happens when Vijay re-enters Rajni's life and the reaction it has on Ravi and Manju.

A strict disciplinarian, Nissar Hussain Khan would insist on voice training (sur sAdhanA) from four in the morning, and make Rashid practice one note of the scale for hours on end. A whole day would be spent on practising just a single note. Although Rashid detested these lessons as a child, but the disciplined training shows in his easy mastery of taan (arpeggios) and layakaari today. It was not until he was 18 that Rashid began to truly enjoy his musical training.
Rashid Khan gave his first concert at age eleven, and the following year, 1978, he performed at an ITC concert in Delhi. In April 1980, when Nissar Hussain Khan moved to the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA), Calcutta, Rashid Khan also joined the academy at the age of 14. By 1994, he was acknowledged as a musician (a formal process) at the academy.
The Rampur-Sahaswan gayaki (style of singing) is closely related to the Gwalior gharana, which features medium-slow tempos, a full-throated voice and intricate rhythmic play. Rashid Khan includes the slow elaboration in his vilambit khayals in the manner of his maternal grand-uncle and also developed exceptional expertise in the use of sargams and sargam taankari (play on the scale). He is influenced with the style of Ustad Amir Khan and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi .
He is also a master of the tarana like his guru but sings them in his own manner, preferring the khayal style rather than the instrumental stroke-based style for which Nissar Hussain was famous. There is no imitation of instrumental tone. His mastery of all aspects tonal variations, dynamics and timbre adjustment leave very little to be desired in the realm of voice culture.
His renderings stand out for the emotional overtones in his melodic elaboration. He says: "The emotional content may be in the alaap, sometimes while singing the bandish, or while giving expression to the meaning of the lyrics. This brings a touch of modernity to his style, as compared to the older maestros, who placed greater emphasis on impressive technique and skillful execution of difficult passages.
Rashid Khan has also experimented with fusing pure Hindustani music with lighter musical genres, e.g. in the Sufi fusion recording Naina Piya Se (songs of Amir Khusro), or in experimental concerts with western instrumentalist Louis Banks. He has also performed jugalbandis, along with sitarist Shahid Parvez and others.

This particular album LIVE AT SUNNY TOWERS VOL 2 is a very rare collection of ragas done by Ustad Rashid Khan Live. Here he has sang three ragas namely Raag Ragesri, Raag Chhayanat, and Raag Desh. Two of these Ragas he has shown in its full blossom and one he has just showcased. Ustad Rashid khan is quite uniquely famous for his Kheyals in Vilambit. Raag Ragesri he performs in an elaborate manner. Ragesri is a raag from the Khamaj Thaat. Ustaad Rashid Khan shows his mastery over time signatures and melody through this Raag. The linear movement of Hindustani Classical music is showcased brilliantly in this track through the barytone of Ustad Rashid Khan. Bhimsen Joshi once pointed out that with Contemporary singers like Rashid Khan the future of Hindustani Classical music is quite secure.
Ustaad Rashid Khan was born in a musical family. He hails from the famous Rampur Sahaswan Khayal Gharana. Rashid khan is the grandson of legendary Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan sahib who happened to be the founder of the Rampur Sahaswan Khayal Gharana. Though Rashid as a child was under the tutelage of his maternal uncle Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan was a strict disciplinarian and put young Rashid through rigid training. This strict training though was not very enjoyable for young Rashid but payed off in building the unique Taankari and laykari that Ustad Rashid Khan is now famous for.
This particular album LIVE AT SUNNY TOWERS VOL 2 is a very rare collection of ragas done by Ustad Rashid Khan Live. Here he has sang three ragas namely Raag Ragesri, Raag Chhayanat, and Raag Desh. Two of these Ragas he has shown in its full blossom and one he has just showcased. Ustad Rashid khan is quite uniquely famous for his Kheyals in Vilambit. Raag Ragesri he performs in an elaborate manner. Ragesri is a raag from the Khamaj Thaat. Ustaad Rashid Khan shows his mastery over time signatures and melody through this Raag. The linear movement of Hindustani Classical music is showcased brilliantly in this track through the barytone of Ustad Rashid Khan. This rare recording of a private concert of Ustad Rashid Khan is any collector's priced possession.

This legendary singer belongs to the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, and is the great-grandson of gharana founder Inayat Hussain Khan.In a story told in several versions, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi once remarked that Rashid Khan was the "assurance for the future of Indian vocal music”. Born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh. He received his initial training from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan (1909–1993). He is also the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. However, Ustaad Rashid Khan received his main training from Nissar Hussain Khan, initially at his house in Badayun. A strict disciplinarian, Nissar Hussain Khan would insist on rigorous voice training. Although Rashid Khan detested these lessons as a child, but the disciplined training shows in his easy mastery of taan (arpeggios) and layakaari today. Ustad Rashid Khan in his own singing signature style focuses on the slow elaboration in his vilambit Khayals quite similar to the style of Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan, but he also developed his unique style and expertise in the use of sargam and sargam taankaaris. He is very much influenced with the style of Amir Khan and Pt. Bhimsen Joshi.
This album is a rare one as this is a tribute album for Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. In this particular album Ustad Rashid Khan explores the beautiful Raga Shuddha Kalyan. Kaḷyāṇ or Kaḷyāṇī, alternatively called Yaman, is a melakarta rāga (parent musical scale) in the Carnatic music, and is also an important raga in Hindustani music tradition. Its Western equivalent is the Lydian mode. This was a very favourite Raga of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and that might be one of the reasons why Ustad Rashid Khan chose this raga to pay his homage. This Raga of the first quarter of night is most beautifully explored by ustadji in this album. This is one great treasure to be cherished forever.
