Introducing the Oxford Climate Research Network
www.climate.ox.ac.uk
The Oxford Climate Research Network is a cross-divisional research community, harnessing Oxford’s diverse strengths to address the challenge of managing climate change in a complex and uncertain world. The network aims to develop a research agenda to address key challenges of a changing climate, deepen knowledge to inform policy and planning, and develop instruments to improve practice in partnership with government, research and business communities.

Climate and Complex Systems | Physics Nobel Prize 2021
On October 5th, 2021, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics "for groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex physical systems" with one half jointly to Shukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann "for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming" and the other half to Giorgio Parisi "for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales". Let us now take a closer look at both topics to learn about the science behind this year's prize.

Predictability of Extreme Climate Events... - Kurths - Workshop 1 - CEB T3 2019

Predictability of Extreme Climate Events via a Complex Network Approach
Complex networks are a powerful tool in many engineering and science fields. Here, we analyse climate dynamics from a complex network approach. This leads to an inverse problem: Is there a backbone-like structure underlying the climate system? For this, we propose a method to reconstruct and analyze a complex network from data generated by a spatio-temporal dynamical
system. This approach enables us to uncover relations to global circulation patterns in oceans and the atmosphere.
This concept is then applied to Monsoon data; in particular, we develop a general framework to predict extreme events by combining a non-linear synchronization technique wit...

This concept is then applied to Monsoon data; in particular, we develop a general framework to predict extreme events by combining a non-linear synchronization technique with complex networks. This way we analyze the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) and identify two regions of high importance. By estimating an underlying critical point, this leads to a substantially improved prediction of the onset of the ISM by two weeks compared to the available method.

In this eye-opening video, Layne and Pia discuss how climate change is dramatically affecting viticulture around the world, with a special focus on two iconic wine regions: Roma (Italy) and Sonoma (California). 🌿🍷 As a travel writer and wine enthusiast, Layne and Pia dive into their research and personal observations, exploring how rising temperatures, changing weather patterns, and extreme events are reshaping the future of winemaking.
From Italy’s centuries-old vineyards to California’s world-renowned wine country, the duo discusses how winemakers are adapting to these challenges, from altering planting schedules to exploring new grape varieties. This video is both compelling and informative, offering a deep look at the intersection of climate science and wine production, and the resilient spirit of the global wine community.

Excerpt from Layne Randolph's story in Decanter Magazine, July 2024.
Riggs Lokka stands in a seven-foot soil pit on Green Valley’s Hallberg Ranch in Russian River Valley. With a cowboy hat atop his head, he points out the soil types from ground level to the base of the pit. The line of demarcation two feet down is stark. What begins as Gold Ridge Sandy Loam becomes bright-orange Sebastopol Sandy Clay Loam, but even more striking, vine roots branch down through both. Lokka, Vineyard Manager of Emeritus Vineyards and California Dry Farming Advisory Committee Board Member, uses dry farming.
The practice eschews irrigation and relies solely on rainfall and the natural moisture stored in the soil. Vineyard Managers like Lokka help provide a roadmap for California winegrowers with heat and drought-threatened vineyards.
"We only take what Mother Nature gives us," explained Lokka. Emeritus proudly holds the title of the largest 100 percent dry-farmed Pinot Noir estate in Sonoma County. "We don't turn on water. We don't need it. When we first started dry farming, we saw a reduction in crop load; the vines had never not had water.” When the water was shut off, the vines grew deeper to find it in the clay soil. “Now, the vines are producing 3 to 3.5 tons per acre with no problem."
Vineyard soil and geological makeup are critical to dry farming success. “Gold Ridge can hold a lot of water, and it's also very porous, so the roots can easily get down to the [clay], where the water is,” Lokka explained. This allows the roots to reach 20 to 30 feet deep with multiple root tendrils, creating a healthier vine that can adapt naturally to major weather shifts. "You have to be patient. The vines need to figure out where water is stored; you can't force them to find it in the first year. But the complexity of the wines from the fruit will be a better expression of the terroir."
