You used to hold me,
You used to kiss me
A long long time ago
As we're introduced again
You said that we were old friends
But you used to hold me
You used to kiss me
A long long time ago
But to me it seems so strange
To call you by another's name.
'Cause you used to hold me
You used to kiss me
A long long time ago
Just seein' you again
Makes me remember.
A long, long time ago
When you were mine
But it's too late to live
My life all over
Hard to turn back
Old ages of time
As you turned and walked away
I thought again of yesterday.
When you used to hold me
you used to kiss me
A long long time ago.
--- Instrumental ---
Just seein' you again
Makes me remember.
A long, long time ago
When you were mine
But it's too late to live
My life all over
Hard to turn back
Old ages of time
As you turned and walked away
I thought again of yesterday.
When you used to hold me
you used to kiss me
(Lee Pockriss - Paul Vance)
It's a thrill of your kiss
That started all this
And like never before
I'm begging for more.
Whenever the music starts to fill the air
I reach for you and you are there
Here in my arms again I hold you near
Suddenly it's oh, so clear
That love has finally come my way.
I find that my heart begin to skip a beat
I guess it knows my life's complete
Since I saw those dreamy eyes
Soon begin to realize
That love has finally come my way.
Oh, the thrill of your kiss
That started all this
And like never before
I'm begging for more.
Oh, I never thought that love could be
So wonderful but look at me
When I start to get that certain glow
I want the whole wide world to know
That love has finally come my way.
Oh, the thrill of your kiss
That started all this
And like never before
I'm begging for more.
(Jimmy Work)
Making believe that you still love me
It's leaving me alone and so blue
But I'll always dream, still I'll never own you
Making believe, it's all I can do.
I can't hold you close when you're not with me
You're somebody's love you'll never be mine
Making believe, I'll spend my lifetime
Loving you and making believe.
--- Instrumental ---
Can't hold you close when you're not with me
You're somebody's love you'll never be mine
Making believe, I'll spend my lifetime
(Hank Williams)
Say hey, good lookin'
Hey, hey, whatcha got cookin'
Well, how's about cookin'
Something up with me
Hey, hey, sweet well, baby
Don't you think maybe
We could find us
A brand new recepie.
I got a hot rod Ford
And a two dollar bill
And I know a spot
Right over the hill.
There's soda pop
The dancin's free
So if you wanna have fun
Come along with me.
Say hey, good lookin'
Hey, hey, whatcha got cookin'
Well, how's about cookin'
Something up with me.
--- Instrumental ---
Well, I'm free and ready
So we can go steady
So how's about savin'
All your time for me?
No more lookin'
I know I've been tooken
How's about keepin'
Steady company.
I'm gonna throw
My datebook
over the fence
find me one for five
or ten cents.
Keep it till
It's covered with age
I'm writin' your name down
On every page.
Hey, hey, hey, good lookin'
Hey, hey, whatcha got cookin'
Well, how's about cookin'
How's about cookin'
How's about cookin'
(Carl Belew - Faron Young - Johnny Horton)
Everytime I'm kissing you
I think of you kissing him
I came home and I found you
In the arms of a friend.
I should have turned and walked away
When I saw you kissing him
You beg me to forgive you
But I wonder if I can.
'Cause everytime I'm kissing you
I think of you kissing him
You even said you were ashamed
But it hurts me just the same.
And I'll have to pay the cost
'Cause I can't hold the love that's lost
I thought I was the only one
But you don't know the harm you've done.
'Cause everytime I'm kissing you
I think of you kissing him.
--- Instrumental ---
You even said you were ashamed
But it hurts me just the same.
And I'll have to pay the cost
'Cause I can't hold the love that's lost
I thought I was the only one
But you don't know the harm you've done.
'Cause everytime I'm kissing you
Well what does it take to make a grown man want to cry
All it took in my case was the sound of your goodbye
And what does it take to make a man hurt like I do
All it took in my case was the thought of losing you
That's all it took to make the teardrops start
That's all it took to break my foolish heart
Now I know just what it takes to make a grown man want to cry
All it took in my case was the sound of your goodbye
[ steel ]
That's all it took...
Too many nights out on the town too many nights out playing round
Too many places too many faces and I'm not sure you still love me
And I'm not sure you still love me
What makes your heart wanna roam is it that way we're alone
Too much goin' you think you're free and I'm not sure you still love me
And I'm not sure you still love me
I guess I knew it from the start that lovin' you was not too smart
Cause you're the kind that plays the fill you're always out and you always will
So now you know just where I stand I just thought I tell you while I can
So now I told you and you know it's true now I'm not sure I still love you
My darling my darling I wanted to call you my darling
For many a many a day
My darling my darling I flooded and flagged like a starling
My courage just melted away
Now all at once you've kissed me
And there's not a thing I'm sane enough to say
Except my darling my darling get used to that name of my darling
It's here to stay
(My darling my darling my darling my darling)
[ guitar ]
(My darling my darling my darling my darling)
[ guitar ]
(Now all at once you've left me
And there's not a thing I'm sane enough to say
My darling my darling my darling my darling)
My darling my darling I wanted to call you my darling...
(Frankie Brown)
No letter today I have waited since dawn
I've waited each day since you have been gone
No letter today all the days are so long
Why don't you write I know I was wrong.
Just give me one chance please won't you forgive
I've loved you my dear for as long as I lived
I know it's no use but I hope and I pray
The postman goes by no letter today.
--- Instrumental ---
Just give me one chance please won't you forgive
I've loved you my dear for as long as I lived
I know it's no use but I hope and I pray
(Buddy Killen - Faron Young)
(Out of my heart out of my heart)
You tell me you're leaving
Well, why don't you go?
Could it be that your heart
Keeps telling you no?
The door is wide open
But be sure when you start
When you walk out that door
You walk out of my heart.
Why are you waiting
You said we were through
Could it be that you need me
The way I need you.
Walk slowly my darling
Think it over, be smart
When you walk out that door
You walk out of my heart.
--- Instrumental ---
Why are you waiting
You said we were through
Could it be that you need me
The way I need you.
Walk slowly my darling
Think it over, be smart
When you walk out that door
Dear I've thought I've drop a line the weather's cool the folks're fine
I'm in bed each night at nine PS I love you
Yesterday we had some rain but all in all I can't complain
Was it dusty on the train PS I love you
Write to the Brown's just as soon as you're able they came around to call
I've burned the hole in the dining room table and let me see I guess that's all
Nothing else for me to say and so I'll close oh but by the way
Everybody's thinking of you PS I love you
(Marijohn Wilkin - Danny Dill)
Ten years ago on a cold dark night
There was someone killed neath the town hall light
There were few at the scene but they all agree
The slayer who ran looked a lot like me.
The judge said son what is your alibi
If you were somewhere else then you won't have to die
I spoke not a word though it meant my life
I had been in the arms of my best friend's wife.
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows and nobody sees
Nobody knows but me.
The scaffold was high and eternity near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
But sometimes at night when the cold wind moans
In a long black veil she cries all alone.
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows and nobody sees
Nobody knows but me.
Deep within my heart lies a melody a song of old San Antone
Where in dreams I lived with a memory beneath the stars all alone
It was there I found beside the Alamo enchantment strange as the blue up above
A moonlit pass that only she would know still hears my broken song of love
Moon and all your splendor knows only my heart call back my Rose Rose of San Antone
Lips so sweet and tender like petals falling apart speak once again of my love my own
Broken song empty words I know still live in my heart all alone
For that moonlit pass beside the Alamo and Rose my Rose of San Antone
[ fiddle ]
Yeah I'm gonna change everything that holds a mem'ry of you oh yeah
I'm gonna start in the hall take the pictures off the wall and burn 'em
Move the chairs around take the window curtains down and burn 'em
Everything I see reminds me you were here
Yeah I'm gonna change everything that holds a mem'ry of you oh yeah
The candle of your set you gave me on the night of my birthday
The records that you bought the hi-fi we loved to play
The decorating man will come and rearrange them
Yeah I'm gonna change everything that holds a mem'ry of you oh yeah
Take the carpet off the floor throw it out the door it's filled with tears
Everything I find that brings you to my mind must disappear
And every night I dream I'll dream of someone new
Yeah I'm gonna change everything that holds a mem'ry of you
(Ted Daffan - Jimmie Davis)
You promised me love that would never die
That promise you've made was only a lie
Now after you're gone all alone and I
For all that I've got is a worried mind.
--- Instrumental ---
And when I was down, you've just let me there
I needed you so but you didn't care
You found the new love and home so fine
But all that I got is a worried mind.
--- Instrumental ---
I gave you a ring, I gave you a home
You promised me that you never would wrong
I bought you fine clothes and I bought you wine
(Faron Young - Hilda Young)
Will I ever get used to being your old used to be?
I watched you walk away from me so long ago
I didn't know I loved you and I let you go
And just to think that I'm the one who set you free
Will I ever get used to being your old used to be?
I've gotten used to people's stares as I walk by
I keep my head bowed low so they can't see me cry
They say there goes a man who lives in a memory
Will I ever get used to being your old used to be?
--- Instrumental ---
I've got no one to help me pass these lonely days
When night time comes I just can't keep the blues away
Or if I dream your lovely face is all I see
Will I ever get used to being your old used to be?
I've gotten used to people's stares as I walk by
I keep my head bowed low so they can't see me cry
They say there goes a man who lives in a memory
(Johnny Bond)
Today I burned your old love letters
Yes, I burned them slowly one by one
And before I'd light the flame
I'd read them to try and find the wrongs I done.
The first you wrote me was the sweetest
The last one broke my heart in two
And now alone I left you weeping
For the ashes of your letters tied in blue.
As I burned your old love letters
I watched my dreams go up in smoke
I lived again those precious moments
I heard each tender word you spoke.
The first you wrote me was the sweetest
The last one said that we were through
And our love is there among the embers
(Roger Miller - Faron Young)
I know how it feels to be alive with no desire to live
I know how it feels to never take and always have to give
And the day I found out was on the day you let me down
In this world so full of love with not enough to go around.
--- Instrumental ---
I was once so proud to have your love that I could burst with pride
But you took that away and now I'm breaking up inside
It's enough to make me wish that I could hide and not be found
In this world so full of love with not enough to go around.
--- Instrumental ---
For days and nights I wonder and the reason I can't find
There's so much love around me and no love to call mine
It's enough to make me wish that I could hide and not be found
Well when you live in the country everybody is your neighbor
On this one thing you can rely
They'll all come to see you and they'll never never leave you
Saying y'all come to see us by and by
Y'all come (y'all come) y'all come (y'all come)
Oh y'all come to see us when you can
Y'all come (y'all come) y'all come (y'all come)
Oh y'all come to see us now and then
[ guitar ]
The kinfolks're comin' they're comin' by the dozen
They're eatin' everything from soup to hay
And right after dinner they ain't looking any thinner
And here's what you'll hear 'em say
Y'all come (y'all come)...
[ guitar ]
Well now grandma's a wishing they'd come to kitchen
And help her do the dishes right away
But they all start leavin' even though she's a grievin'
You can still hear grandma say
Y'all come (y'all come)...
(Helen Carter - Chet Atkins)
If you think I'm gonna cry because you said goodbye
You're right but I wish you were wrong
If you think I'll dream of you and wish that you'd been true
You're right but I wish you were wrong.
There's no used in pretending that my love isn't true
If you were blind you still could see how much I care for you
If you think thetre'll never be another love for me
You're right but I wish you were wrong.
--- Instrumental ---
If you think I'm gonna cry because you said goodbye
You're right but I wish you were wrong
If you think I'll dream of you and wish that you'd been true
You're right but I wish you were wrong.
I should have known right from the start
Your love was not for me
If I'd had just gone on my way
My heart might still be free.
If you think I'm gonna pray
That you'll come back some day
(Steve Karliski - Larry Kolber - Al Gordoni)
This is the story of the Yellow Bandana
A handsome young soldier and the girl named Rosana.
Oh, way down west in the winds on New Mexico
There lived a girl and the soldier who loved her so
And every night neath the full crimson moon above
This brave young soldier would pledge her his love.
And he gave Rosana his yellow bandana
To wear in her hair till he's with her once more
He gave Rosana his yellow bandana
Mounted his pony and rode off to war.
His orders came and he had to ride west again
Seems that Apaches were causing unrest again
He kissed Rosana goodbye as he rode away
Promising this time he'd come back to stay.
And he gave Rosana his yellow bandana
To wear in her hair till he's with her once more
He gave Rosana his yellow bandana
Mounted his pony and rode off to war.
That war was over and he came back home and found
That the Apaches had burned the whole village down
And neath the tree where he'd last kissed Rosana
Gripped on the cross was his yellow bandana.
And he gave Rosana his yellow bandana
To wear in her hair till he's with her once more
He gave Rosana his yellow bandana
Mounted his pony and rode off to war.
He gave Rosana his yellow bandana
To wear in her hair till he's with her once more
He gave Rosana his yellow bandana
(Jimmie Davis - Charles Mitchell)
The other night dear as I layed sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
When I awoke dear I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cry.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away.
--- Instrumental ---
You told me once dear you really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me and you love another
You have shatered all my dreams.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear how much I love you
(Sam Martin - Ben Trace - Clem Watts)
You call everybody darling
And everybody calls you darling too
You don't mean what you're saying
It's just a game you're playing.
But you'll find out that I can play the game as well as you
If you call everybody darling
then love won't come a knocking at your door
And as the years go by you'll sit and wonder why
Nobody calls you darling anymore.
--- Instrumental ---
You call everybody darling
And everybody calls you darling too
You don't mean what you're saying
It's just a game you're playing.
(Cindy Walker - Eddy Arnold)
(You don't know me)
You give your hand to me
And then you say hello
And I can hardly speak
My heart is beating so.
And anyone can tell you think
You know me well
But you don't know me.
(You don't know me.)
No, you don't know the one
Who dreams of you at night
And longs to kiss your lips
And longs to hold you tight.
To you I'm just a friend
That's all I've ever been
But you don't know me.
For I never knew the art
Of making love
Though my heart aches
With love for you.
Afraid and shy
I let my chance go by
the chance that you
Might have loved me too.
You give your hand to me
and then you say goodbye
I watch you walk away
Beside the lucky guy.
You'll never, never know
The one who loves you so
Did you find a box of your favorite flowers
Did you see a mark where I hand up for hours
Did you find a note that was left beside the light
You had a call from a broken heart last night
Did you see some teardrops just outside your door
I stayed there and cried till I couldn't cry no more
Did you see some footprints oh that stumbled out of sight
You had a call from a broken heart last night
I know I shouldn't love you but I can't help myself
I'd walk right up and kiss you with you holdin' someone else
True love knows no master and it can't tell wrong from right
You had a call from a broken heart last night
[ guitar ]
I know I shouldn't love you...
Puttin' on your makeup I can see the lines you're tryin' hard to hide
Lines that tell the story of your life with me that seemed to you good times
All I've been to you is a thorn to me you've been a rose
And you keep right on loving me but why you do I'll never know
Making yourself pretty for a man who hasn't made your life much fun
Never do you complain and if angels walk on earth then honey you'd be one
And if you've ever cried you've cried inside where it don't show
And you keep right on loving me but why you do I'll never know
I broke every promise not even the small ones could I keep
That's why I keep thinkin' that you'd be so much better off without me
And I know if I try to leave you'd even let me go
(Hank Williams)
Your cheatin' heart will make you weep
You'll cry and cry and try to sleep
But sleep won't come the whole night through
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you.
When tears come down like falling rain
You'll toss around and call my name
You'll walk the floor the way I do
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you.
--- Instrumental ---
Your cheatin' heart will pine someday
And crave the love you threw away
The time will come when you'll be blue
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you.
When tears come down like falling rain
You'll toss around and call my name
You'll walk the floor the way I do
(Walk tall)
Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye
That's what my mama told me when I was about knee high
She said son, be a proud man and hold your head up high
Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye
All through the years that I grew up, ma taught these things to me
But I was young and foolish then and much too blind to see
I ignored the things she said as if I'd never heard
Now I see and understand the wisdom of her words
Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye
That's what my mama told me when I was about knee high
She said, son, be a proud man and hold your head up high
Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye
I started goin' places where the youngsters shouldn't go
I got to know the kind of girls it's better not to know
I fell in with a bad crowd and laughed and drank with them
Through the laughter mama's words would echo now and then
Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye
That's what my mama told me when I was about knee high
She said, son, be a proud man and hold your head up high
Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye
I got in trouble with the law and I'm in prison now
Through these prison bars I see things so much different now
I've got one year left to serve and when my time is done
I'll walk tall and straight and make ma proud to call me son
Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye
That's what my mama told me when I was about knee high
She said, son, be a proud man and hold your head up high
Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye
Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye
Walk tall
I can never remember the joy we once knew
And I seem to forget all the times you were true
But the moment you left me is still on my mind
Some of those memories hurt me all of the time
The days when you loved me I can never recall
But the nights when you cheated I remember them all
Oh that last lonely night when you left me here behind
Some of those memories hurt me all of the time
If I could remember heart of the happiness
Then maybe I wouldn't have to cry all alone like this
I'm always thinkin' of the many times that you lied
Instead of thinkin' of the many times that you tried
Oh I can't free myself from this prison of mem'ries that bind
(Stan Jones)
Boots and Stetson and six guns
And the lilies grow high
They grow for a man with a gunslingin' hand
Who before his time must die.
They grow in the trail he has traveled
A trail well spattered with lead
They weep for the graves of the many
Men they weep for the men now dead.
He rides along lonely, no friends
But only the lilies growin' high
All men seem to fear him, not one will go near him
And he knows the reason why.
His name and fame spread before him
Like a carpet of death and he knows
One day he'll be slow on the draw
And then for him a lily will grow.
A woman may love him though she knows
Soon above him the lilies growin' high
Then like the lily she'll bow down her head
Bow down her poor head and cry.
On some boothill they will lay him
And a headboard will sway in the wind
The lily will nod and gently weep
For another gunman's end.
Boots and Stetson and six guns
And the lilies grow high
Boots and Stetson and six guns
(Jimmy Duncan)
When day ends and night falls my heart
'Cause a dream a dream of love
There's no dream like my dream
And darlin' it's you I'm dreamin' of.
If my dreams're daydreams
Then daydreams I have many of
There's no dreams like my dreams
And darlin' my dreams are of you.
Why did you prove untrue
When you know it's only you
When day breaks my heart aches
My lips taste the kisses we once knew.
There's no dream like my dreams
And darlin' my dreams are of you.
--- Instrumental ---
When day ends and night fall
'Cause a dream a dream of love
There's no dream like my dream
And darlin' it's you I'm dreamin' of.
(Red Lane - Faron Young)
Well, this old picture is so faded you can hardly see
And that smiling face there in the middle
Well, you can see it's me
And that pretty girl there on my left
Was mine to hold so tight
But I lost her to my friend there on the right.
And that big house you see there in the background
That big shiny car I bought to drive her around
And just to keep her happy I worked hard both day and night
Now it all belongs to my friend there on the right.
The picture showed the truth but I was oh, so blind
I was a guy in the middle all the times
I filled my hopes up till they were out of sight
And then she walked away with my friend there on the right.
--- Instrumental ---
The picture showed the truth but I was oh, so blind
I was a guy in the middle all the times
I filled my hopes up till they were out of sight
And then she walked away with my friend there on the right.
(Ned Washington - Hoagy Carmichael)
It's not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me
Oh no, it's just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation
Oh no, it's just the nearness of you.
When you're in my arms
And I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night, the nearness of you.
(It's not the pale moon that excites me)
(That thrills and delights me)
(Oh no, no,) it's just the nearness of you.
When you're in my arms
And I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
Oh it's funny how wine makes fools out of men around women
And it's funny how women love men till their money is gone
As I went down to Juarez town to buy my love a ring
I stopped me by the tavern where the painted woman sing
Says I I'll take one look inside but I'll not touch that wine
And in the morn I'll buy the ring and Mary will be mine
Oh it's funny how wine makes fools out of men around women
And it's funny how women love men while the wine flows on
It's funny how wine makes fools out of men around women
And it's funny how women love men till their money is gone
I walked me in and sat me down beside the candle light
And a painted girl walked by and said are you alone tonight
I showed her all the money that would buy my Mary's ring
And soon the wine began to flow and we began to sing
Now I walk the streets of Juarez town with Mary on my mind
But every window I look me in there's painted girls and wine
I can't go on to Mary cause I don't have the right
So I'll stay here in Juarez town no matter what it brings
This Is the Part Where I Cry
Life is a picture and I play the lead
My biggest line was goodbye
My leading lady just walked out on me
And this, is the part where I cried
I was great in the scene where she found someone new
You should have seen my look of surprise
And if you have just walked into the picture
This, this is the part where I cry
And after the picture is over
And you're judged for the part where you lied
The award of achievement will be given
To me for the part where I cried
Cause I was great in the scene where she found someone new
You should have seen my look of surprise
And if you have just walked into the picture
(Eddie Kilroy - Dianne Kilroy)
(Pen and paper won't you tell me what to write)
Pen and paper won't you tell me what to write
I don't know I can't think and I'd been here half a night
I don't want to hurt her but I love somebody new
Pen and paper help me tell her we're through.
Shall I say dear used to be forget me
Or shall I say dear broken heart we'll have to part
When she reads about my new love will she cry?
Woah-ooh-yeah
Open up your window, open up your door
I need a taste of your sweet, sweet love
That's all I'm livin' for
I've been down on my luck, down on my knees
Just waitin' for a chance to show you babe
I only aim to please
Hey, hey, honey, I'm out on the edge, I'm on the borderline
Hey little honey, you won't believe what's goin' through my mind
(I'll build a mountain of love) mountain of love, everytime I think of you
(You feel a mountain of love) mountain of love, see it risin' up babe
And all you've gotta do, is get high on my mountain of love, woah-oh
Oh-ooh, there ain't no use in pretendin'
'Cause I got my eyes on you, baby
The first time that I saw you girl
I knew, nobody else would do
Hey, hey, honey, take a little trip, take a ride with me
Hey little honey, 'cause I've got somethin' you've just gotta see
(It's a mountain of love) mountain of love, high enough to touch the sky
(You feel a mountain of love) mountain of love, see it risin' up hah
And all you gotta do, is get high on my mountain of, love
C'mon Mick!
Yeah-eah-eah-eh
Hey, hey, honey, I'm out on the edge, I'm on the borderline
Say little honey, come with me and we'll climb, climb, climb
(About a mountain of love) mountain of love, high enough to touch the sky
(A mountain of love) mountain of love, can't you feel it burnin' up inside?
(How do you feel a mountain of love?) mountain of love, everytime I think of you
(Do you feel a mountain of love...) mountain of love, ...risin' up?
And all you gotta do, is get high on my mountain of love, yeah-eah-eah-eh
Give a little
Give a little babe
Climb on top now
Get up
Oh-ooh woah-oh-ooh
I need a high, mountain of love
(Robert Allen - Al Stillman)
The New Year's Eve we did the town
The night we tore the goal post down
We'll have these moments to remember.
The quiet walks the noisy fun
The ballroom prize we almost won
We'll have these moments to remember.
Though summer turns to winter
And the present disappears
The laughter we were glad to share
Will echo through the years.
Though other nights and other days
may find us gone our separate ways
We'll have these moments to remember.
--- Instrumental ---
Though summer turns to winter
And the present disappears
The laughter we were glad to share
Will echo through the years.
Though other nights and other days
may find us gone our separate ways
And I wake up in the mornin' with my hair down in my eyes and she says hi
And I stumble to the breakfast table while the kids are goin' off to school goodbye
And she reaches out and takes my hand and squeezes it and says how you feelin' hon
Then I look across at smilin' lips that warm my heart and then I see my morning sun
And if that's not lovin' me then all I've got to say
Is God didn't make little green apples
And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime
There's no such thing as Doctor Suess Disneyland and Mother Goose no nursery rhyme
God didn't make little green apples and it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime
And when myself is feeling low I think about her face aglow and ease my mind
Sometimes I call her up at home knowing she's busy
And ask her if she'd get away and meet me and maybe we could grab a bite to eat
And she drops what she's doin' and she hurries down to meet me and I'm always late
But she sits waitin' patiently and smiles when she first sees me
Cause she's made that way
And if that ain't lovin' me then all I've got to say
Is God didn't make little green apples
And it don't snow in Minneapolis when the winter comes
(God put a song in the heart of an angel and softly she sang it to me)
You know I get to thinking a lotta times about back when I was a boy
The old homeplace where I grew up of the days both good and bad
My overalls were hand-me-downs my shoes they were full of holes
I used to walk four miles to school every day through the rain the sleet and the cold
I've seen the nights when my daddy would cry
For the things that his family would need
But all he ever got was a badland farm and seven hungry mouths to feed
And yet and yet our homefire never flickered once
Cause when all these things went wrong
Mama took the hymn book down and mama sang a song
(What a friend we have in Jesus)
Oh I've been rocked to sleep many a night to the tune of What a Friend
And come morning Rock of Ages why it would wake me gently once again
And then dad he'd reach up and he'd take the Bible down
And he'd read it read it loud and long
And I always felt that maybe our home was blessed
When daddy would say mama sing a song
Let see sister left home first I guess
And there was Bob and then Tommy and at last was Dan
By then dad's hair was turning white and I had to be my mama's little man
But it seemed that as daddy's back grew weak
My mother's faith just grew that much strong
And those were the greatest days of all it was there when mama sang a song
(Rock of ages cleft for me let me hide myself in Thee)
I guess the house is still standing I don't get to go back there anymore
Least much no voice is left to fill those halls
And I bet there ain't even no steps to grace the floor
Cause you see my mama sings in heaven now up around God's golden throne
But I'll always believe that this world is a better place to live
Because one time my mama sang a song
(Mitchell Torok)
South of the border hey, I know a lad
He's got more fun than anybody's had
Don't got no worry, don't got no dough
Everybody's a wondering 'bout Mexican Joe.
In old Mexico they call him the Rhumba King
Leads all the women around on a string
When they go out they get a million thrills
But the lovely senoritas wind up with the bills.
Dancin', romancin', always on the go
Sun shining down on Mexican Joe.
--- Instrumental ---
He makes the night spots all along the bay
People want to see him when he comes their way
He spreads so much joy everywhere he goes
Everybody shouts Viva la Mexican Joe.
He likes to gamble at poker he's an ace
He's always lucky with the cardsthat's got a face
At winnin' the money he is sure a whiz
But when they win they don't collect
'Cause they don't know where he is.
Dancin', romancin', always on the go
Sun shining down on Mexican Joe.
--- Instrumental ---
He don't got no income tax 'cause he don't got no dough
Still he gets along just fine how we'll never know
He's got everything he wants a girl a drink a song
And if we use his formula we surely can't go wrong.
His favorite playground is anywhere there's girl
He's got that something that sets their hearts a whirl
It couldn't be his money cause he ain't got a peso
But when he wants a kiss all he's got to do is say so.
Dancin', romancin', always on the go
Sun shining down on Mexican Joe.
I thought if I really try I'd get over you
And I would spend my time doing what I wanted to
But all my good intentions were lost along the way
For missing you was all I did today
I thought I'd get you off my mind find someone new
And go out have some fun like I wanted to
But like old plans of wiser men they often go astray
And missing you was all I did today
Missing you yet loving you each moment you're apart
Knowing there could never be another in my heart
I'll try to find new things to do to pass the time away
But missing you was all I did today
[ fiddle ]
Missing you yet loving you...
(Willie Nelson)
Yesterday, as I talked with a friend in town
I forgot to remember that you'd gone
And for a moment I found my lips smilin'
But a moment isn't very long.
And last night as I danced with a stranger
And she held her cheek close to my own
For a moment I almost forgot you
But a moment isn't very long.
Every now and then
I get a chance to smile
But those every now and thens
Just last a little while.
And tonight I've got a date with a new love
But I know I'd do just as well at home
For a moment maybe I could forgot you
But a moment isn't very long.
Well I got cotton in the bottom land
It's up and growin' and I got a good stand
My good wife and them kids of mine
Gonna get new shoes come pickin' time
(Get new shoes come pickin' time)
Every night when I go to bed
I thank the Lord that my kids are fed
They live on beans eight days of nine
But I get 'em fat come pickin' time
(Got 'em fat come pickin' time)
Corn is yeller and the beans are high
That sun's hot in the lazy ol' sky
The work is hard till layin' by
Layin' by till pickin' time
(Layin' by till pickin' time)
Well it's hard to see by the coaloil light
And I turn it off pretty early every night
Cause a jug of coaloil costs a dime
But I'll stay up late come pickin' time
(stay up late come pickin' time)
Yes my ol' wagon barely gets me to town
I patched the wheels I watered 'em down
Keep her in shape so she'll be fine
To haul my cotton come pickin' time
(Haul my cotton come pickin' time)
Last Sunday morning when they passed the hat
It was still nearly empty back where I sat
But the preacher smiled and he said that's fine
(The Lord's gonna wait till pickin' time)
CHORUS
Fate has planned a place for girls like you
Who torture guys like me
And the time for all bad things to end
Will surely come, you'll see
The world will turn its back on those
Who never can be true
And you'll find out that fate has planned
A place for girls like you.
I tried so hard to be the way
You wanted me to be
To give you things you wanted most
But still we dis-a-gree
Each time I try to change my life
To fit the way you live
I find that you
Just made new plans
For more than I can give.
CHORUS
(2nd verse)
The past holds no fond memories
Just hope that you will see
That all I ever got from you was only misery
You know I've wasted half my life
And in your agony
The heartaches you caused me to bear
(Bill Anderson)
Well, I spent the better part of my life
On a Mississippi riverboat
I used to be known from coast to coast
As the slickest gambler afloat.
I've dealt the cards from Minnesota
To the harbor in New Orleans
I made a lotta big money on the riverboat
I loved a lotta pretty riverboat queens.
Riverboat, riverboat
I love your whistle's wail
I wish I was back on the riverboart
'Stead of in the Memphis jail.
--- Instrumental ---
Oh, a big man got on the riverboat
Our last time in St. Paul
He had a lotta money but his luck went bad
And the riverboat won it all.
He said I dealt from the bottom of the deck
And he pulled a shiny knife
But before that gambler lunged at me
My .44 took his life.
Riverboat, riverboat
I love your whistle's wail
I wish I was back on the riverboart
'Stead of in the Memphis jail.
--- Instrumental ---
Well, they came on the boat and they took me to jail
When we got to Tennessee
A gamblin' man has very few friends
Guess nobody cared for me.
So I might be here for a many long years
But if I ever get out
I'm gonna head straight for that levee
And get me a riverboat headin' south.
Riverboat, riverboat
I love your whistle's wail
I wish I was back on the riverboart
'Stead of in the Memphis jail.
Rhinestone rhinestones for your pretty hand
Daddy bought 'em from the rhinestone man
Rhinestone rhinestones for your curly hair
Just like the ones your mommie used to wear
(Just like the ones your mommie used to wear)
Oh mommie's gone so far away and daddy thinks of mommie every day
I don't know but I believe up there mommie's wearin' diamonds in her hair
(Mommie's wearin' diamonds in her hair)
Oh I wish things could be just like they were
Mommie left you here and you look so much like her
And everytime rhinestones you wanna wear
I think of her rhinestones in her hair
(Billy Ed Wheeler - Jed Peters)
He rode easy in the saddle
He was tall and lean
At first you thought nothing
But a streak of mean.
Could make a man look
So downright strong
But one look in his eyes and you know
That you was wrong.
He was a mountain of a man
And I want you to know
He could preach hot hell
Of freezin' snow.
He carried a bible
In a canvas sack
The folks just called him
The Reverend Mr. Black.
He was poor as a beggar
But he rode like a king
And sometimes in the evening
You could hear him sing.
I've gotta walk that lonesome valley
I've gotta walk it by myself
Oh, nobody else can make it for me
I've gotta walk it by myself.
If ever I could have
Through this man in black
Was sort or had
Any yellow up his back.
I gave that nation
Up the day
A lumberjack came in
And it want to pray.
And he kicked open
That meetin' house door
He cussed everybody
Up and down the floor.
Then when things get quiet
In the place
Walked up and cussed
In the preacher's face.
And he hit that reverend
Like the kick of a mule
To my way of thinking
It took a pure fool.
To turn the other cheek
To that lumberjack
But that's what he did
The Reverend Mr. Black.
Well, he stood like a rock
A man among men
And he let that lumberjack
Hit him again.
Then with a voice
As kind as could be
He cut him down
Like a big oak tree.
When he said, you've gotta walk that lonesome valley
You've gotta walk it by yourself
Oh, nobody else can make it for you
You've gotta walk it by yourself.
It's been many years since we had to part
And I guess I've learned his ways by heart
I can still hear his sermonts ring
Down in the valley where he used to sing.
I followed his yes sir and I don't regret it
And I hope that I can be of credit
To his memory for you understand
The Reverend Mr. Black was my old man.
You've gotta walk that lonesome valley
You've gotta walk it by yourself
Oh, nobody else can make it for you
(Doc Pomus - Mort Shuman)
Well, you can dance every dance
With the guy who gives you the eye
Let him hold you tight
And you can smile every smile
For the man who held your hand
Neath the pale moon light.
But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
Oh darlin', save the last dance for me.
Oh, I know that the music's fine like sparkling wine
Go and have your fun
Laugh and sing but while we're apart don't give your heart
To anyone.
And don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
Oh darlin', save the last dance for me.
Baby don't you know I love you so
Can't you feel it when we touch
I will never ever let you go
'Cause I love you oh, so much.
Well, you can dance, go and carry on
Till the night is gone and it's time to go
And if he asks if you're all alone can he take you home
You gotta tell him no.
And don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
Oh darlin', save the last dance for me.
Baby don't you know I love you so
Can't you feel it when we touch
I will never ever let you go
'Cause I love you oh, so much.
(R. Markowitz - A. Fenady)
Johnny Yuma was the rebel
He roamed through the west
This Johnny Yuma the rebel
He wandered alone.
He got fightin' mad
This rebel lad
He packed no star
As he wandered far.
Where the only law
Was a hook and a draw
The rebel Johnny Yuma.
Johnny Yuma was the rebel
He roamed through the west
This Johnny Yuma the rebel
He wandered alone.
He searched the land this restless lad
He was panther quick and leather tough
With the figure that he's been pushed enough
The rebel Johnny Yuma.
Johnny Yuma was the rebel
He roamed through the west
This Johnny Yuma the rebel
He wandered alone.
He got fightin' mad this rebel lad
With the dreams he's hold till his dyin' breath
He searched his soul and gambled with death
