It is so refreshing to see a female superhero on television. If I had young daughters, they wouldn't have had much in the way of positive female role models when it came to superhero television. Sure, there's Agent Carter, though she's as much superhero as she is an assassin, and not particularly little girl-friendly; and yes, there's the Black Canary and Speedy on Arrow, though again, that's not little girl friendly. There's of course a time and place for characters like Agent Carter and Black Canary, and they're both super (so to speak) women... but they're for the PG-13 audience. Supergirl, on the other hand, is positively brimming with youthful exuberance that any little girl-- or boy, or 25-yr-old-man-- could love. Melissa Benoist is wonderful as a somewhat unsure new superhero, and when she flies, she absolutely sells her excitement. Meanwhile, the pilot is full of girl power, and while it can be on the nose sometimes, I love that it's there because the people and kids that need it have dearly missed it from the small screen. Supergirl isn't your CW show. And it isn't HBO. What it is is a family-friendly, PG show that is making up for all the other shows before it.

Just a vessel for the modern feminist message of hate. Had such high hopes for this. Instead it turned out to be campy like a tween show. It also has the most blatant brainwashing attempts ever. "Why call her supergirl instead of empowering her with superwoman. That's like being anti-feminist"-supergirl. Not joking, blurbs from the anti white-male hate group (modern feminist) references are used throughout. Many people like me made the mistake of watching it the first time...won't do that again. Not a superhero series at all!

A lot of films and television shows seem to me to be knock-offs with a '90210' suffix implied; e.g Star Trek 90210 in 2009 or The Flash 90210 that's in it's second season now. But then, aging baby-boomers probably aren't the primary intended audience. I was a bit concerned because I see some of the same influences on Supergirl - but then I just chilled out and settled in to enjoy. Melissa Benoist makes a terrific Supergirl, Calista Flockhart is wonderful as Kara Danvers' boss. I like that the show is trying to differentiate its Kryptonian character from the 'other guy'. Supergirl is going to be very different from Superman - and that's a good thing. I just hope that the character is allowed to grow and she doesn't need the "you can do it" pep talk every single week.

Pilot is weak. If 2nd is too I'd give up. The most apt way to describe it is that they stuffed so much content in the pilot, everything comes off as shallow. The first act is especially dismal, with horrible narration, clumsy girlishness in front of an attractive man, setup for a love triangle... go watch the SNL sketch with Black Widow. Plus, I count her rejecting her powers, accepting them, then rejecting them, then accepting them, in about a 40 minute time span. If it doesn't improve, there is far too much good TV I have to catch up with.

I'd give 2.5 stars if I could. Generally, I got the feeling that I'm not the target audience, but since I watched/tolerated Arrow and the Flash, I was interested. The episode can be summed up pretty easily: "There is a girl with superpowers, who is a woman but acts like a girl with superpowers. She has attractive men who make her stammer, learns hand-to-hand combat in about 20 minutes, and is up against puddle-deep villains. Also, she is a female with superpowers." I kept mistaking the actress as Felicity from Arrow because they seem to play the same exact character. If you think that watching Felicity play the role of Super(wo)man would make a great show, then this is for you. If you don't particularly care about the gender of the main character and just want to see a superhero series with depth and believable characters, then give this show a very very very wide berth and go (re)watch Daredevil.

I like the idea, but... It's executed in such a terrible way. I only watched the pilot, but if they keep up that this will continue to be unbearable to watch. There's way to much stuffed into one episode which causes every scene to go by way too quickly. I don't understand why they keep mentioning that she female so much and acting like that's weird or something. I don't really know why people are so excited that this show has a female lead. It's terrible, and it's not like there have never been female leads before.
DYSFUNCTIONAL I DESPISE this show! I thought it would be ok. But after seeing pilot... I was disappointed. She's cocky, stubborn, annoying, childish, not attractive, and dysfunctional. This show is terribly written. And the show looks like I'm watching the 1950's superman with color.. The way she flies looks fake. This is the worst DC TV show ever. Right now on the top lines are Gotham and Arrow. The flash is ok, it could be better though. I'd give it -5 stars if i could. Yall low life writers needs to learn from Arrow!
Fantastic Why do people hate for such stupid reasons? Don't listen to all the bs around it, people were hating it before it even aaaaired just cause it has a female lead. And a lot of dumbasses can't stand watching anything who's star isn't a white male. Anywho, I was blown away by it. For a pilot episode, already better than smallville. Better cgi than other hero shows. Plus Melissa is hella cute. Plus the show has a lot of potential with characters and especially villian if people watch so it won't get cancelled
Really, I mean really The writers of this TV show are very sloppy. They have no idea how to create a good story line. Although, most of it is corny and not well written the setting is about the best part of it (compared to the rest). After the setting they ruin it by making rookie mistakes. For example she says "I have a headache" when later on she says she never experienced pain before. How would she know that that was pain? Mistakes like these are what I think ruins a show. If they continue to do this they will not survive.
Good show Overall, this is a good show to watch w/ the family. Should be a bit more realistic though - but hey, it's TV right? Btw - when will humanity learn to keep up with time/evolution and leave racism behind? (In this case, I suspect more so prejudice than racism) So what Jimmy is black...how do we know that this wasn't the initial thought of the creator, but because of the violent and racist era, was forced to make the character white. Get over your fear already people!!
Hated it Its basically a copy of the flash, but full on feminism girl power style. It sucks. It even runs on the Flash formula. 1. A person gets power, in supergirls case though she just never wanted to use her powers..... stupid 2. Slowly people close to the hero find out and the hero forms a group/advisors and a base of operations, 3. fights a villain and loses. 4. Figures out how to defeat the villain with the help of the "team" at the "base".
Lack of imagination I like watching this show the big problem I have with it is that they have a black Jimmy Olsen. That shows a lack of imagination on the writers part. Why does a black man have to play a white role in order to show success in America? I would have had him be Jimmy Olsen's best friend since college and they both would be top photographers. No, they explain it by saying that it is an alternate universe where there is a black Jimmy Olsen.
Why CW why? Why is it that you have crossed all known limits of stupidity in this show? Having a superheroine dressed up like a fancy dresser? Simply ruined my hope... Can't see why all those feminists are rallying around such a dumb show... Take my word, don't waste your time and money on this.. Piece of mess
Fun first season! The road in the beginning was really rocky. The writers didn't seem to have a good sense for who the characters would be and supporting cast felt like cardboard cut outs. But after the second half of the season it all came together. I laughed. I cried. I yelled in anger and empathy. Give Supergirl a chance, especially since the CW just picked it up.
Cheesy but likable💪that episode 7, S1 though? I love how she loses her powers for the day in episode 7? That's sooo ridiculous that she loses them for the WHOLE day? So Unlikely for the reasons given???. At best should only be 'slightly' weakend. Anyways, Smallville was cheesy at first too until it got better and better. Eventually had less cheese? also nothing good can come from taking her blood and testing her. AND this should be on the CW. Just saying
Still on the fence I really enjoy Kara as she's likeable, a bit clumsy and goofy but in a charming way. My problem is the DEO. It's an annoying aspect (teaching her how to fight) and the director is too heavy-handed with his aggression towards Kara. "You don't know how to use your powers! Etc" over and over. The supporting cast is weak imo and the writing is a bit cheesy. Supergirl is a great character so let's see how things pan out.
I expected worse... When I heard that the show was going to Premiere. I was nervous about how they would make the show too comical. Or even to gimmicky. Then the previews came out and i saw Calista Flockhart I got a little bummed. But I'm actually really impressed and I really like the first episode. Now that I found out that the same producer as Arrow & The Flash is also producing this show I have some high hopes for it. Let's see how the show progresses throughout the season. Here's hoping to a good show.
Not bad, but not great People don't dislike it becuase it's about a female superhero. They dislike it because the acting wasn't very good and the plot was unoriginal, and they kept using pointless things that didn't make sense because they needed the plot to be continued. The plot went far without explaining too much, and some things didn't connect well. The graphics and action are on par(ish) with the other super hero shows, and the soundtrack is nice. Overall it's decent.
Season 2 turned political You want a break from agendas being shoved down your throat? Then look elsewhere. I don't care where you are on the political spectrum, I come to entertainment to take a break from it all, not have it forced on me. Too bad.
Boycotting Supergirl Refuse to watch because of who they cast to play Jimmy. Not because he's black (although that was a surprise) but because he's Mechad Brooks. You got the guy from Necessary Roughness, the most "me, me, me" actor you could possibly find, to play romantic lead opposite SUPERGIRL??!!! The whole point of the Jimmy/Kara dynamic was to play down their individual strengths and give them things to discover about each other, not make Jimmy an overtly supercool ladies' man in shining armor. This pairing won't work.
Might get good not good now Meh. Pilot is trying to do too much at once. They basically condensed the entire season of daredevils hero journey into one episode. They are making a bizarre choice of diminishing superman in the world to the point they won't even name him. Any contact where it would make a lot of sense for superman to be there is instead being delivered by Jimmy Olsen. Kara immediately tells people her secret identity which felt weird since the second person she tells is an it guy we know nothing about.
Something old with potential I remember Supergirl, the movie. At first, I saw the previews then I watched the Pilot of this Season One. Overall, I give it a 4/5 for potential but I would honestly give it a 3/5 because the writer too quickly eludes to the base story of each episode will cover fighting an alien from the ship of criminals. Hope I'm proven wrong in the next episode. I watched all 10 seasons of Smallville.
I live this show! Haters back off. There are so many haters. I don't even get why they think Supergirl is bad. If I were you I would just back away and not cause a problem. Reply with "#hatersbackoff" if you're with me.
Haters gonna hate. This is honestly one of my favorite shows. My daughters love it, and it's so nice to have a show that we can watch it together and all enjoy. The storylines (and characterization; looking at you Hank Henshaw) can be campy, but that's part of the fun. Kara has some absolutely heartbraking scenes between her and her aunt, and I'm really digging the dynamic that she has going on with Superman. The focus on the power of the supportive relationship between Kara and her foster sister Alex is amazing. 5/5 stars
Balanced in theme but character problems Best way to put this whoever designed this supergirl went way overboard the storyline is great but the characters were overdone and in all honesty to anybody who has racial issue the have been at least 3 versions of James Olsen and even more subversions too so chill out James Olsen has been every race that our species has so calm down and shut up evidently and to clear all this up u do realize that James Olsen's character was made to be a symbol to display humanity's purity and to keep him as one race is stupid there have also been in DC comics been just as many versions of superman, supergirl, green Lantern, and every other hero, villain, anti-hero and anti-villain that DC Comics could think up I have seen sexist villains but never sexist heroes so on that point I state the same thing calm down or shut up we all need to realize that life is about balance yet we all never realize it if anybody has any comments about this specific comment just email me idc what disses people have nor compliments either just expect some honesty when I reply the email also my username so wanna comment back just be just wish to get the same amount of honesty I'm giving right now
Want to like the pilot But the action and special effects were pretty bad. The villains were really bland and many of the other characters were very one dimensional. Could improve as the show continues and I hope it does.
This is really cool! This series is very interesting and has a good storyline! I will admit, alot of stuff was going on in the Pilot and I did think some scence were really corny, but I can look past that easily and enjoy this series w/ no problems. This show is great for both adults and children to watch together! Supergirl is a great character who little girls can look up to and become strong, independent young girls! Definitely gonna keep on watching! :)
Super girl Too many leaps. It was not bad for a first episode but I couldn't give it a higher rating. It was not realistic. The beauty of Smallville was the fact we watched Clarke grow and learn his powers. The pilot bypasses all that. Ok...I could accept that. But then, her first fight she gets her butt handed to her, very believable since she's never been in a fight before. But then in her next battle she all of a sudden knows how to fight and has control over all her powers? Just make the show more believable.
Wow The effects and cinematography is beautiful, hopefully they will keep it up. The actors all put in solid performance and I do like the overall plot and how Supergirl is searching for her place in the world, it humanizes her and makes her a much more interesting character. My only "complaint" is the episode's story, it felt a little rushed the writers tried to fit too many subplots, one or two subplots would have done fine. Other than that, this episode was perfect, always nice to see a strong female lead
Really? Look I love the idea of Supergirl and no one will ever top Helen Slater's portrayal of the heroine. I am disappointed in DC for being so obvious that the Supergirl character was never planned or heavily prepared for. You pay close enough attention to the original Superman comicbook series and you will notice there are no indicators or lead ups to his cousin. I feel this was detrimental to the success of Supergirl's character. Viva la Marvel!!! Lol. All bs aside for real I absolutely loved Man Of Steel.
Supergirl I think it was nothing but a cheap remake of the story of sm's cousin and Jimmy Olson is nothing like the classic or modern-day version of what sm. Is to add injury to insult.
Not the DCU you know. This is NOT Supergirl, barely DCU. And the writing is pretty lame. The tone needs a style, Camp or Kitch or Humor.
It's pretty much garbage. Special effects are pretty good (+1 star), though not as good as Flash. Story is kinda Superman part deux laced with SWJ and Third wave feminist "humor" (-2 stars), which is cringey and off-putting. Somehow it is keeping me interested (+1 star), I think its the fact that its DC. Not really worth what I payed for it. Edit: Just watched the finale (-1 star), so much cheese it set off my lactose intolerance.
OUT OF THIS WORLD! Supergirl's uniform was too dull in color for my tastes. In spite of her pretty looks, her not being blonde combined with her overly "boyish" figure pailed when compared to her comic book imagine. However, her determination, expressions & personality melted my heart winning me over. The special effects crew did an awesome job making supergirls' powers appear authentic! The writer's had me at the edge of my seat. Great show!!!!
Background Noise I am not a superhero fanatic, I just a enjoy a good show when I see one. I did not enjoy this. The acting was a bit bland and the direction they took was predictable, feeling like a superman clone. Unless you are into the whole superhero craze I suggest you just skip this one.
A little cheesey fun never hurt anyone Didn't set my expectations too high and I have enjoyed the show. It's a little on the corny side in places, but not too bad. And there are moments when the actors show they're capable of some real depth when the material gives them a chance to shine. Simple fun.

Tone is everything I have only seen 2 episodes but the tone is offensive to my modern, cynical sensibilities. It has the goofiness of a CW show without the ridiculously grave drama to balance it out. I'm actually more at the 2.5 stars level.
The Feminist Hero I'm sorry, but I tried watching super girl and I thought it was a comedy for how bad it was. The number of times the "hero" was pointed out to be female was unreal. You never saw the flash be pointed out for being a guy, unlike supergirl who pretty much blamed each time she messed up on being a woman. This series is just degrading of DC universe.
