Also known as "Both Ends of the Candle" this is a superior film - more of a ‘drama with music' than a ‘musical' - based on the life of twenties torch singer Helen Morgan, though how closely it relates to the real facts of her life is of no consequence here as the drama and singing are what counts in this film - a virtual last stab at the big Hollywood musical - clearly a genre dying on its feet as the film, demanding colour, was merely shot in black and white.
Ann Blyth was not the first choice for the movie as it was originally intended for Doris Day, who turned it down. Judy Garland didn't want the role either, as she didn't want a ‘sad' ending, and even Susan Hayward was evidently considered. Although the soundtrack songs supplied by Gogi Grant are terrific, Morgan was a soprano singer and Ann Blyth's own voice would, in fact, have been more suitable to the reality of the film, though commercially not so. There are many videos of Morgan on YouTube to see what I mean (try Kern's "Why Was I Born" which includes several photographs of the lady).
The role with which Helen Morgan will always be identified was ‘Julie' in the classic Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II musical "Showboat" which she created on Broadway in 1927; filmed in 1929 (only in the prologue singing her two famous songs as this film was not a film of the musical but based on Edna Ferber's original book); appeared in a revival of in 1932/33 then re-created the role in the first film version in 1936 (which featured Irene Dunne, Allan Jones and Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" and was directed by James Whale, of "Frankenstein" fame) and finally in another revival in Los Angeles just a year before her death in 1941.
The finalé of the film where the fictitious Maddux takes Helen back to her dilapidated club to find it full of friends and showbiz personalities is complete fiction as she died of cirrhosis of the liver on 9 October 1941 after collapsing onstage during a performance of George White's "Scandals of 1942". Her third marriage (though none are mentioned in the film) was to her last manager, Lloyd Johnston, who she married on 27 July 1941, just two and a half months before her death.
In the film, Paul Newman, in only his fourth actual film (he had previously been a prolific TV actor) is extremely convincing in the role of an unpleasant, tough Chicago hoodlum, not the most pleasing of parts, and Ann Blyth is also excellent in the dramatic scenes (her roles in musicals tend to have over-shadowed her acting - remember, she was Oscar-nominated for her role as Joan Crawford's daughter in "Mildred Pierce") and it goes without saying her miming to Gogi Grant's voice-tracks is superb - just look at her throat muscles to know she's actually singing herself!
The film was directed by Michael Curtiz, who directed many classic musicals ("Night and Day", "It's Magic", "White Christmas", "King Creole" etc) not to mention serious dramas such as "Angels with Dirty Faces", "Casablanca", "Mildred Pierce"itself, and many others.
It's interesting to see Rudy Vallee singing and conducting in the movie as himself, and also the composer Jimmy McHugh, who can be seen accompanying Ann Blyth at the piano in some scenes - in fact two of his own songs are used in the film: WI Can't Give You Anything but Love" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street".
Referring back to the proposed casting of Doris Day in the film and her reason for rejecting the offer, citing she did not want to portray the sordid aspects of Morgan's life, which were in direct contrast to Day's wholesome screen image, I think it more likely she didn't want to play another ‘sordid' character as she had done in "Love Me or Leave Me" (one of her greatest roles) which was a very similar telling of another singer's life - Ruth Etting.

While often regarded as one of America's greatest novelists, William Faulkner produced work that did not always translate well to the screen; it's ironically appropriate that this movie, based on several of Faulkner's short stories, is often regarded as one of the best films based on his work, though not especially accurate to the original source material. Ben Quick (Paul Newman), a sullen but self-confident drifter, arrives in a small Mississippi town where his father had a bad reputation as a firebug. Will Varner (Orson Welles), the town's patriarch, still holds a grudge against Quick's dad, and when the young man decides to stay in town and sharecrop on Varner's land, Will goes out of his way to make his life difficult. However, Will develops a grudging respect for Quick's guts and determination, and he wishes that his weak-willed son Jody (Anthony Franciosa) could be more like him; Jody's wife Eula (Lee Remick) happens to agree. In time, Will gets the idea that Quick might be a good match for his daughter Clara (Joanne Woodward) and a better choice to take over his business dealings than Jody. However, neither Clara nor Quick care to be told what to do, and besides, Clara already has a beau -- though Alan Stewart (Richard Anderson) is even more of a milquetoast than Jody and is led by the nose by his mother (Mabel Albertson). However, sparks begin to fly between Clara and Quick, and when Jody fears he may lose his place as heir of Will's estate, he takes drastic action, trapping his father in a barn, setting it on fire, and planting evidence that would suggest that the blaze was Quick's doing. The Long, Hot Summer was the first film that Newman and Woodward made together, and they got married the same year.

Paul Leonard Newman (January 26, 1925 – September 26, 2008) was an American actor, film director, entrepreneur, professional racing driver and team owner, environmentalist, activist and philanthropist. He won numerous awards, including an Academy Award for his performance in the 1986 film The Color of Money, a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Cannes Film Festival Award, an Emmy Award, and many honorary awards. Despite being colorblind, he won several national championships as a driver in Sports Car Club of America road racing, and his race teams won several championships in open wheel IndyCar racing.
Newman was married to actress Joanne Woodward from 1958 until his death. He was a co-founder of Newman's Own, a food company from which Newman donated all post-tax profits and royalties to charity.As of 31 December 2014, these donations totaled US$429.3 million. He was also a co-founder of Safe Water Network, a nonprofit that develops sustainable drinking water solutions for those in need. In 1988, Newman founded the SeriousFun Children's Network, a global family of camps and programs for children with serious illness which has served 290,076 children since its inception.

Ann Blyth was not the first choice for the movie as it was originally intended for Doris Day, who turned it down. Judy Garland didn't want the role either, as she didn't want a ‘sad' ending, and even Susan Hayward was evidently considered. Although the soundtrack songs supplied by Gogi Grant are terrific, Morgan was a soprano singer and Ann Blyth's own voice would, in fact, have been more suitable to the reality of the film, though commercially not so. There are many videos of Morgan on YouTube to see what I mean (try Kern's "Why Was I Born" which includes several photographs of the lady).
The role with which Helen Morgan will always be identified was ‘Julie' in the classic Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II musical "Showboat" which she created on Broadway in 1927; filmed in 1929 (only in the prologue singing her two famous songs as this film was not a film of the musical but based on Edna Ferber's original book); appeared in a revival of in 1932/33 then re-created the role in the first film version in 1936 (which featured Irene Dunne, Allan Jones and Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" and was directed by James Whale, of "Frankenstein" fame) and finally in another revival in Los Angeles just a year before her death in 1941.
The finalé of the film where the fictitious Maddux takes Helen back to her dilapidated club to find it full of friends and showbiz personalities is complete fiction as she died of cirrhosis of the liver on 9 October 1941 after collapsing onstage during a performance of George White's "Scandals of 1942". Her third marriage (though none are mentioned in the film) was to her last manager, Lloyd Johnston, who she married on 27 July 1941, just two and a half months before her death.
In the film, Paul Newman, in only his fourth actual film (he had previously been a prolific TV actor) is extremely convincing in the role of an unpleasant, tough Chicago hoodlum, not the most pleasing of parts, and Ann Blyth is also excellent in the dramatic scenes (her roles in musicals tend to have over-shadowed her acting - remember, she was Oscar-nominated for her role as Joan Crawford's daughter in "Mildred Pierce") and it goes without saying her miming to Gogi Grant's voice-tracks is superb - just look at her throat muscles to know she's actually singing herself!
The film was directed by Michael Curtiz, who directed many classic musicals ("Night and Day", "It's Magic", "White Christmas", "King Creole" etc) not to mention serious dramas such as "Angels with Dirty Faces", "Casablanca", "Mildred Pierce"itself, and many others.
It's interesting to see Rudy Vallee singing and conducting in the movie as himself, and also the composer Jimmy McHugh, who can be seen accompanying Ann Blyth at the piano in some scenes - in fact two of his own songs are used in the film: WI Can't Give You Anything but Love" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street".
Referring back to the proposed casting of Doris Day in the film and her reason for rejecting the offer, citing she did not want to portray the sordid aspects of Morgan's life, which were in direct contrast to Day's wholesome screen image, I think it more likely she didn't want to play another ‘sordid' character as she had done in "Love Me or Leave Me" (one of her greatest roles) which was a very similar telling of another singer's life - Ruth Etting.

The finalé of the film where the fictitious Maddux takes Helen back to her dilapidated club to find it full of friends and showbiz personalities is complete fiction as she died of cirrhosis of the liver on 9 October 1941 after collapsing onstage during a performance of George White's "Scandals of 1942". Her third marriage (though none are mentioned in the film) was to her last manager, Lloyd Johnston, who she married on 27 July 1941, just two and a half months before her death.
In the film, Paul Newman, in only his fourth actual film (he had previously been a prolific TV actor) is extremely convincing in the role of an unpleasant, tough Chicago hoodlum, not the most pleasing of parts, and Ann Blyth is also excellent in the dramatic scenes (her roles in musicals tend to have over-shadowed her acting - remember, she was Oscar-nominated for her role as Joan Crawford's daughter in "Mildred Pierce") and it goes without saying her miming to Gogi Grant's voice-tracks is superb - just look at her throat muscles to know she's actually singing herself!
The film was directed by Michael Curtiz, who directed many classic musicals ("Night and Day", "It's Magic", "White Christmas", "King Creole" etc) not to mention serious dramas such as "Angels with Dirty Faces", "Casablanca", "Mildred Pierce"itself, and many others.
It's interesting to see Rudy Vallee singing and conducting in the movie as himself, and also the composer Jimmy McHugh, who can be seen accompanying Ann Blyth at the piano in some scenes - in fact two of his own songs are used in the film: WI Can't Give You Anything but Love" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street".
Referring back to the proposed casting of Doris Day in the film and her reason for rejecting the offer, citing she did not want to portray the sordid aspects of Morgan's life, which were in direct contrast to Day's wholesome screen image, I think it more likely she didn't want to play another ‘sordid' character as she had done in "Love Me or Leave Me" (one of her greatest roles) which was a very similar telling of another singer's life - Ruth Etting.

While often regarded as one of America's greatest novelists, William Faulkner produced work that did not always translate well to the screen; it's ironically appropriate that this movie, based on several of Faulkner's short stories, is often regarded as one of the best films based on his work, though not especially accurate to the original source material. Ben Quick (Paul Newman), a sullen but self-confident drifter, arrives in a small Mississippi town where his father had a bad reputation as a firebug. Will Varner (Orson Welles), the town's patriarch, still holds a grudge against Quick's dad, and when the young man decides to stay in town and sharecrop on Varner's land, Will goes out of his way to make his life difficult. However, Will develops a grudging respect for Quick's guts and determination, and he wishes that his weak-willed son Jody (Anthony Franciosa) could be more like him; Jody's wife Eula (Lee Remick) happens to agree. In time, Will gets the idea that Quick might be a good match for his daughter Clara (Joanne Woodward) and a better choice to take over his business dealings than Jody. However, neither Clara nor Quick care to be told what to do, and besides, Clara already has a beau -- though Alan Stewart (Richard Anderson) is even more of a milquetoast than Jody and is led by the nose by his mother (Mabel Albertson). However, sparks begin to fly between Clara and Quick, and when Jody fears he may lose his place as heir of Will's estate, he takes drastic action, trapping his father in a barn, setting it on fire, and planting evidence that would suggest that the blaze was Quick's doing. The Long, Hot Summer was the first film that Newman and Woodward made together, and they got married the same year.

He also won several national championships as a driver in Sports Car Club of America road racing, and his race teams won several championships in open wheel IndyCar racing.
Newman was a co-founder of Newman's Own, a food company from which Newman donated all post-tax profits and royalties to charity. As of July 2011, these donations exceeded $300 million.
After the war, he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Speech at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio in 1949. Newman later attended the Yale School of Drama for one year before moving to New York City to study under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.
Oscar Levant wrote that Newman initially was hesitant to leave New York for Hollywood: "Too close to the cake," he reported him saying, "Also, no place to study."
Newman arrived in New York City in 1951 with his first wife Jackie Witte, taking up residence in the St. George section of Staten Island. He made his Broadway theater debut in the original production of William Inge's Picnic with Kim Stanley in 1953 and appeared in the original Broadway production of The Desperate Hours in 1955. In 1959, he was in the original Broadway production of Sweet Bird of Youth with Geraldine Page and three years later starred with Page in the film version.
His first movie for Hollywood was The Silver Chalice (1954). The film was a box office failure and the actor would later acknowledge his disdain for it. In 1956, Newman garnered much attention and acclaim with Somebody Up There Likes Me as boxer Rocky Graziano. By 1958, he was one of the hottest new stars in Hollywood. Later that year, he starred in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), opposite Elizabeth Taylor. The film was a box office smash and Newman garnered his first Academy Award nomination. Also in 1958, Newman starred in The Long, Hot Summer with Joanne Woodward, whom he met on the set. He won best actor at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival for this film.
Newman was one of the few actors who successfully made the transition from 1950s cinema to that of the 1960s and 1970s. His rebellious persona translated well to a subsequent generation. Newman starred in Exodus (1960), The Hustler (1961), Hud (1963), Harper (1966), Hombre (1967), Cool Hand Luke (1967), The Towering Inferno (1974), Slap Shot (1977), and The Verdict (1982). He teamed with fellow actor Robert Redford and director George Roy Hill for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and The Sting (1973).
He appeared with his wife, Joanne Woodward, in the feature films The Long, Hot Summer (1958), Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys!, (1958), From the Terrace (1960), Paris Blues (1961), A New Kind of Love (1963), Winning (1969), WUSA (1970), The Drowning Pool (1975), Harry & Son (1984), and Mr. and Mrs. Bridge (1990). They both also starred in the HBO miniseries Empire Falls, but did not have any scenes together.
In addition to starring in and directing Harry & Son, Newman also directed four feature films (in which he did not act) starring Woodward. They were Rachel, Rachel (1968), based on Margaret Laurence's A Jest of God, the screen version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972), the television screen version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Shadow Box (1980), and a screen version of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie (1987).
Twenty-five years after The Hustler, Newman reprised his role of "Fast" Eddie Felson in the Martin Scorsese-directed The Color of Money (1986), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He told a television interviewer that winning an Oscar at the age of 62 deprived him of his fantasy of formally being presented with it in extreme old age.
Newman announced that he would entirely retire from acting on May 25, 2007. He stated that he did not feel he could continue acting at the level he wanted to. "You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. So I think that's pretty much a closed book for me."
Newman died on September 26, 2008, aged 83, surrounded by his family and close friends. His remains were cremated after a private funeral service near his home in Westport.

After the war, he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Speech at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio in 1949. Newman later attended the Yale School of Drama for one year before moving to New York City to study under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.
Oscar Levant wrote that Newman initially was hesitant to leave New York for Hollywood: "Too close to the cake," he reported him saying, "Also, no place to study."
Newman arrived in New York City in 1951 with his first wife Jackie Witte, taking up residence in the St. George section of Staten Island. He made his Broadway theater debut in the original production of William Inge's Picnic with Kim Stanley in 1953 and appeared in the original Broadway production of The Desperate Hours in 1955. In 1959, he was in the original Broadway production of Sweet Bird of Youth with Geraldine Page and three years later starred with Page in the film version.
His first movie for Hollywood was The Silver Chalice (1954). The film was a box office failure and the actor would later acknowledge his disdain for it. In 1956, Newman garnered much attention and acclaim with Somebody Up There Likes Me as boxer Rocky Graziano. By 1958, he was one of the hottest new stars in Hollywood. Later that year, he starred in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), opposite Elizabeth Taylor. The film was a box office smash and Newman garnered his first Academy Award nomination. Also in 1958, Newman starred in The Long, Hot Summer with Joanne Woodward, whom he met on the set. He won best actor at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival for this film.
Newman was one of the few actors who successfully made the transition from 1950s cinema to that of the 1960s and 1970s. His rebellious persona translated well to a subsequent generation. Newman starred in Exodus (1960), The Hustler (1961), Hud (1963), Harper (1966), Hombre (1967), Cool Hand Luke (1967), The Towering Inferno (1974), Slap Shot (1977), and The Verdict (1982). He teamed with fellow actor Robert Redford and director George Roy Hill for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and The Sting (1973).
He appeared with his wife, Joanne Woodward, in the feature films The Long, Hot Summer (1958), Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys!, (1958), From the Terrace (1960), Paris Blues (1961), A New Kind of Love (1963), Winning (1969), WUSA (1970), The Drowning Pool (1975), Harry & Son (1984), and Mr. and Mrs. Bridge (1990). They both also starred in the HBO miniseries Empire Falls, but did not have any scenes together.
In addition to starring in and directing Harry & Son, Newman also directed four feature films (in which he did not act) starring Woodward. They were Rachel, Rachel (1968), based on Margaret Laurence's A Jest of God, the screen version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972), the television screen version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Shadow Box (1980), and a screen version of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie (1987).
Twenty-five years after The Hustler, Newman reprised his role of "Fast" Eddie Felson in the Martin Scorsese-directed The Color of Money (1986), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He told a television interviewer that winning an Oscar at the age of 62 deprived him of his fantasy of formally being presented with it in extreme old age.
Newman announced that he would entirely retire from acting on May 25, 2007. He stated that he did not feel he could continue acting at the level he wanted to. "You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. So I think that's pretty much a closed book for me."
Newman died on September 26, 2008, aged 83, surrounded by his family and close friends. His remains were cremated after a private funeral service near his home in Westport.

They become concerned when the rocket is late in re-entering the Earth's atmosphere and Burns berates Dozier telling this isn't how his famous father would have done it. When the rocket finally returns they are baffled by a huge block of ice that has mysteriously gotten into the cabin during the return trip. After a scientific analysis reveals that the ice has a molecular construction "completely unknown to us," they are startled to discover that not only the base, but the entire surrounding area is getting extremely frigid. Realizing that the ice is a form of Alien invader, which will ultimately freeze the Earth, Major Dozier has no choice but to order that the block of ice be put back on the rocket and that he personally blast off with it into outer space..
Series Premise:
Tales of Tomorrow is an American anthology science fiction series that was performed and broadcast live on ABC from 1951 to 1953. The series covered such stories as Frankenstein, starring Lon Chaney, Jr., 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea starring Thomas Mitchell as Captain Nemo, and many others featuring such performers as Boris Karloff, Brian Keith, Lee J. Cobb, Veronica Lake, Rod Steiger, Bruce Cabot, Franchot Tone, Gene Lockhart, Walter Abel, Cloris Leachman, Leslie Nielsen, and Paul Newman. The series had many similarities to the later Twilight Zone which also covered one of the same stories, "What You Need". In total it ran for eighty-five 30-minute episodes. It was called “the best science-fiction fare on TV today” by Paul Fairman, editor of If.
The idea for this science fiction television series was developed by Theodore Sturgeon and Mort Abrahamson, together with the membership of the Science Fiction League of America. The original title was planned as Tomorrow is Yours. A deal was struck with Richard Gordon and George Foley, giving the producers of the show first choice of any of the 2,000 short stories and 13 novels by the various members of the League.
Tales of Tomorrow was the first dramatized showcase for several authors, including Arthur C. Clarke. Other early science fiction writers whose work was reflected in the series included Fredric Brown ("The Last Man on Earth" and "Age of Peril"), Philip Wylie ("Blunder"), C.M.
