The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is a large, arid region in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent that forms a natural boundary between India and Pakistan. It is the world's 17th largest desert, and the world's 9th largest subtropical desert. About 85% of the Thar Desert is in India, and the remaining part in Pakistan. In India, it covers about 320,000 km2 (120,000 sq mi), of which 60% is in Rajasthan and extends into Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana. This desert comprises a very dry part, the Marusthali region in the west, and a semidesert region in the east with fewer sand dunes and slightly more precipitation.
The Thar Desert extends between the Aravalli Hills in the north-east, the Great Rann of Kutch along the coast and the alluvial plains of the Indus River in the west and north-west. Most of the desert is covered by huge shifting sand dunes that receive sediments from the alluvial plains and the coast. The sand is highly mobile due to strong winds occurring before the onset of the monsoon. The Luni River is the only river integrated into the desert. Rainfall is limited to 100–500 mm (3.9–19.7 in) per year, mostly falling from July to September.

People living in the Thar Desert region of Pakistan near the border with India, experience frequent periods of severe drought. During protracted drought periods many families move to barrage areas (adjacent to canals) for survival. Many fall into debt and have to sell their animals for low prices or seek employment in towns far from their homes. This is a short documentary of our trek for ten days into the Thar Desert from Jaisalmer, an ancient city in Rajasthan, India. With just three camels; Papu, Lalu, and Babaloo and our trusted guide Rhman, we set out with all the food and water necessary for the foray. We trekked about 20 km per day going 7 to 8 hours on camel back. We slept on top of the dunes at night and battled dung beetles and the occasional snake. The people of the desert are incredibly hospitable and friendly and we had some amazing interactions. We got to know our camels intimately as well as our guide a hard working man who is passionate about life.

When you think India, if you think spicy food, snake charmers, dodging cows, the Taj Mahal, and total chaos- you’re thinking about Northern India. It's an adventure waiting to happen, and will leave you wondering why it only accounts for 1% of world tourism. Join Ricky Moreno as he explores Delhi, Rajasthan, Agra, Rishikesh, and Varanasi. Welcome to Delhi. Say goodbye to your personal space. It’s crowded, it’s overwhelming, and definitely exhausting. One day here can feel like an entire week. The only way you’ll have any fun is to just put down the Purell and join the party. Instead of going straight to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, first I head west to hang with some locals in Rajasthan. Here, the people are welcoming, the desert is sprawling, and the camels command the streets. And it...

By AmarGuriro The coal deposits of Pakistan's Thar Desert are divided into 12 blocks, each containing 2 billion tonnes of coal. In the first phase the Sindh provincial government has allocated block II to Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) to excavate 1.57bn tonnes of coal and build a 660 megawatt power plant. The plant is expected to send power to the Pakistani national grid by June 2019 and will later be expanded to produce 1,320 MW of power. A state-owned Chinese company, the China Machinery & Engineering Corporation (CMEC), is providing the machinery and technical support for the excavation of coal, and building and running the power plant. In this episode, Julie ventures into one of the world's harshest environments to camp on the dunes and meet the tribal people that make the desert their home. From the golden city of Jaisalmer, camel caravans take modern day explorers for romantic excursions into the Thar Desert. Julie also rides through the dunes like the ancient Rajput warriors on Marwari horses and visits India's largest desert festival to mingle with the thousands of people and animals that assemble in Pushkar each year. After a week of camels and horses, she makes the migration to one of India's most famous bird sanctuaries, then, takes a peak beyond the walls of India's most enduring symbol, the Taj Mahal.
