Fives
Fives is an English sport believed to derive from the same origins as many racquet sports. In fives, a ball is propelled against the walls of a special court using a gloved or bare hand as though it were a racquet, similarly to hand-pelota.
Background
The Concise Oxford Dictionary (1925) describes fives as a ball game played with hands or bat in court with two, three or four walls. The name may be derived from the slang expression "a bunch of fives" (meaning a fist). The game has also been known as hand-tennis and historically was often played between the buttresses of church buildings in England. There are links between Fives and the Irish and North American handball games. In recent years, British clubs began to establish ties with clubs in those countries.
Fives is not the same as Long Fives, which is played in a real tennis court.
Types
There are two main types of fives, Rugby Fives and Eton Fives. A precursor to Rugby Fives is Warminster (or Wessex) Fives; another variant of Wessex fives is Winchester Fives, although there are only about 9 places in the UK where this is still played.

Rugby Fives National Singles Final 2015
This two and a half hour epic match to find the champion of the 2015 Nationals was one of the most spectacular matches in the history of the sport. The two finalists are Will Ellison and Daniel Tristao. Will won the title last year and Dan the year before. Both played consistently go hammer and tong together in the various regional finals and this was the big one. Tremendous shots, clever play, tireless retrieval and pushing to the very limits of endurance are just some of the traits on offer for anyone who can stomach this match. Sadly the battery cut out at the business end of the third so the creatives among you can simply make the ending up.

The astonishing final from Winchester - Ellison & Mohammed going for the 6th title in a row, but Tristao and Roberts playing better than ever. The quality of this match was off the scale! Sadly, due to batteries and memory, we've missed certain parts of each game, but you get this gist. Amazing stuff! Here's the official report: The final was a classic. In november 1925, one week after returning to Chicago from New York, where he had spent one year
in the Fletcher Henderson orchestra, Louis Armstrong started his famous “Hot Five” series of recordings. The band, set up in advance by his wife, piano player Lil Hardin, and Okeh record company consultant Richard M. Jones, included some of the best New Orleans musicians available in town. It was not a working band. The musicians were only re-united for recording purposes. Reportedly they only played in public once, at a promotional big party, along with other Okeh recording artists.
With this all-star band, Louis had a chance to fully showcase his advanced musical thought, emancipating the soloist’s role for all the jazz-to-come. “Cornet Chop Suey”, “Big Butter and Egg Man”, “Hotter Than That” among the others, tell the story.
On top of it, for the first time, he could show his vocal powers. Unbelievably, before february 1926, the only chances to hear his voice on record were few bars in an obscure Henderson record and some talking in “Gut Bucket Blues”. Nobody dared to commercialize his un-conventional vocal tone.
Of course he didn’t waste time and just after “Georgia Grind” he put down one of the most influential vocals of all-time: “Heebie Jeebies”, that caused nearly every jazz singer in the World to take “scat” choruses.
As the Okeh company didn’t have recording studios in Chicago, an engineer with portable equipment was sent from New York few times a year. In one one week or so all the company’s recording artists made their records in a hurry (that’s why we don’t know any alternate takes by the Hot Five, and others acts as well?). When the guy came in may 1927, somebody (who?) thought it would be good to add tuba and drums to the band, adjusting the name to “Hot Seven”. The outfit produced at least one masterwork: “Potato Head Blues”, not to mention the rest.
After these sessions the format went back to the quintet, with occasional sittin’-in of the great blues guitar player Lonnie Johnson, also from New Orleans.
In 1928 a the “Hot Five” were completely re-vamped in line-up and concept… but that’s another story.

The two finalists are Will Ellison and Daniel Tristao. Will won the title last year and Dan the year before. Both played consistently go hammer and tong together in the various regional finals and this was the big one.
Tremendous shots, clever play, tireless retrieval and pushing to the very limits of endurance are just some of the traits on offer for anyone who can stomach this match. Sadly the battery cut out at the business end of the third so the creatives among you can simply make the ending up.

Here's the official report:
The final was a classic. After a fairly routine first game dominated by Ellison's astounding volleying and speed around the court, the holders came up against some forceful resistance from Roberts and Tristão, who took a substantial lead in the second game and managed to hold on to it – just – through a wonderfully skilful series of exchanges leaving the gallery gasping in disbelief at the attacking and retrieving on show. In the third, the pattern continued, with Roberts and Tristão again going into an early lead. This time, however, they came under heavier pressure in trying to defend it, although the pace of the game slowed as all the players began to feel the effect of the effort expended. As the score crept up, there was little to separate the pairs, and the odd error reminded the spectators that the players were human, after all. The result was in doubt until the final rally, but in the end Ellison and Mohammed managed to take the game 15-12 and retain their hold on the Barnes Bridge trophy, making it six in a row.
