The BMW R1200RT is a touring or sport touring motorcycle that was introduced in 2005 by BMW Motorrad to replace the R1150RT model. It features a 1,170 cc (71 cu in) flat-twin engine with a six-speed gearbox and shaft drive.
BMW Motorrad began manufacturing RT (Reise-Tourer, or travel tourer) touring motorcycle models in the late 1970s. The first of these were air-cooled (or "airhead") models that continued BMW's long tradition dating to 1923 of producing "boxer" or opposed flat-twin engined motorcycles with unit engine-transmission construction and shaft final drive.
In 1995, BMW produced its first air and oil-cooled (or "oilhead") RT model, the R1100RT. The new machine included standard ABS brakes, four-valve heads, five-speed gearbox, Telelever front suspension, Paralever rear suspension, and an electrically adjustable screen.
In 2002, BMW launched the R1150RT, providing the same basic platform with increased engine capacity and horsepower, fully linked power-assisted ABS brakes, revised front lighting system, and a six-speed gearbox. This model was further updated in 2004 by the adoption of dual ignition, with two spark plugs per cylinder.
Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (German pronunciation: [baˈjɛɐ̯ɪʃə mɔˈtɔʁn̩ ˈvɛɐ̯kə]; German for Bavarian Motor Works), usually known under its abbreviation BMW, is a German luxury automobile, motorcycle, and engine manufacturing company founded in 1916. Headquartered in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, it also owns and produces Mini cars and serves as the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. BMW produces motorcycles under BMW Motorrad, and plug-in electric cars under the BMW i sub-brand. It is one of the best-selling luxury automakers in the world. The company is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index.
BMW was established as a business entity following a restructuring of the Rapp Motorenwerke aircraft manufacturing firm in 1917. After the end of World War I in 1918, BMW was forced to cease aircraft-engine production by the terms of the Versailles Armistice Treaty. The company consequently shifted to motorcycle production as the restrictions of the treaty started to be lifted in 1923, followed by automobiles in 1928–29.

I've always fancied trying one of these "full dress tourers" and the big BMW R1200RT does not disappoint. This is my first impressions type review of the mighty boxer powered beast....

2016 BMW R 1200 RT Motorcycle Review - The little brother in many ways to the K1600 GT, this guy packs a huge twin boxer engine that feels much like a big v-twin cruiser. It's torque curve is very flat giving very good power no matter where you are. Low speed control is phenomenal especially when you consider the overall bike size. The body carries many of the same features as the 1600 without the luxury items but it does feel and perform IMO more like an adventure bike than sport tourer. For me, I look for power, smoothness and speed in a tourer and the feel of the big twin makes me want it in a different frame. Visit http://TwoWheelObsession.com for all the new content! first ride on bmw 2016 r1200rt
After an extended test day on a 2015 RT last summer, I got my hands on a 2016 last week. If the weather turns i hope to get out on the bike and perhaps do a few more videos on it. BMW continues its technological march, and this bike is very well equipped (it has every option except for the auxiliary driving lights). The K1600 is dramatically more expensive here in Canada. This bike, for example, is base price of 21000, whereas the K starts at 25000. Most of that extra is the engine and the headlight. The K adaptive headlight is VERY effective and bright.
I visited Squires Cafe whilst BMW Motorrad were having a test ride weekend, and took the opportunity to compare the current 2016 R1200RT, with the water-cooled engine, against my own 2011 Twin-Cam RT.
