Gary Earl Johnson (born January 1, 1953) is an American businessman and politician. He served as the 29th Governor of New Mexico from 1995 to 2003, as a member of the Republican Party, and was the Libertarian Party nominee for President of the United States in the 2012 election. He is a candidate for the Libertarian Party presidential nomination in the 2016 election.
Born in Minot, North Dakota, Johnson moved with his family to New Mexico in his childhood. While a student at the University of New Mexico in 1974, Johnson sustained himself financially by working as a door-to-door handyman. In 1976 he founded Big J Enterprises, which grew from a one-person venture to become one of New Mexico's largest construction companies. He entered politics for the first time by running for Governor of New Mexico in 1994 on a fiscally conservative, low-tax and anti-crime platform. Johnson won the Republican Party of New Mexico's gubernatorial nomination, and defeated incumbent Democratic governor Bruce King. During his tenure as governor, Johnson became known for his low-tax libertarian views, adhering to policies of tax and bureaucracy reduction supported by a cost–benefit analysis rationale. He cut the 10% annual growth in the budget: in part, due to his use of the gubernatorial veto 200 times during his first six months in office. Johnson set state and national records for his use of veto and line-item veto powers: estimated to have been more than the other 49 contemporary governors combined, which gained him the nicknames "Veto Johnson" and "Governor Veto".
Donald John Trump, Sr. (born June 14, 1946) is an American businessperson and media personality. He is the chairman and president of The Trump Organization and the founder of Trump Entertainment Resorts. Trump's career, branding efforts, personal life, wealth, and outspoken manner have made him famous throughout the country. Since 2015, he is also a candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 election.
Trump is a native of New York City and a son of Fred Trump, who inspired him to enter real estate development. After two years at Fordham University and while studying at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Trump worked for his father's firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son. Upon graduating in 1968 he joined the company, and in 1971 was given control, renaming the company "The Trump Organization". Since then he has built hotels, golf courses, and other properties, many of which bear his name. He is a major figure in the American business scene and has received prominent media exposure. The NBC reality show The Apprentice bolstered his fame, and his three marriages were extensively reported in tabloids.

Former governor and Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson is polling the highest of third-party candidates, although he did not qualify for the upcoming first debate. He speaks with Gwen Ifill about what he sees as unfair election polling, how he would do away with the “added layer of bureaucracy” that is the Department of Homeland Security and the Black Lives Matter movement.
So when it comes to the first presidential debate, only Hillary Clinton and Donald J. Trump, the two most-hated candidates in recorded history, will be allowed to participate. Here are five good reasons why Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate for president who is a former two-term governor of New Mexico, should be allowed to participate. And here's a bone for supporters of the Green Party's candidate, Jill Stein: At least some apply to her as well. 1. 15 percent makes no sense. The Commission on Public Debates, which was created by the Republican and Democratic Parties in 1987, says participants must average 15 percent in five polls they choose. But why 15 percent? If you're going to insist on a poll-driven number, 5 percent makes far more sense. That's the number you need to hit to...

Third party candidate Gary Johnson will not be invited to the first presidential debate, but he has managed to get his name on the ballot in 50 states. Watch as he discusses with Sheinelle Jones his candidacy thus far and the latest national poll showing Trump in the lead.
It’s the dream for any third party candidate running for President to make headlines just days before a general election debate. But recently, the headlines for former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson haven’t exactly been the type that he’s been hoping to get. The one time Republican turned Libertarian party candidate for the White House went instantly viral two weeks ago during an interview with MSNBC’s Morning Joe. Johnson, who touts his GOP executive experience in a heavily blue state, asked columnist Mike Barnicle point black, “What is Aleppo?” in reference to the refugee crisis in Syria. And today’s bizarre turn may not help things much either. NBC News’s Kasie Hunt interviewed Johnson about pulling even in some of the battleground state polls if he were able to get onto the debate...

Gary Johnson is in the news again because he did or said something wacky and/or zany. Has he realized that nobody pays attention to him until he acts weird? Is he just a weird dude? Also, his plan for global warming is to ignore it until we die. Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz, Jimmy Dore, and Brett Erlich, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Gary Johnson isn't the first presidential candidate to be stumped by a question during an interview. CNN's Jeanne Moos has some cringeworthy classics.
Video Transcript: Things started off normal while discussing the upcoming presidential debate. KASIE HUNT: Do you think, if you were able to get on the debate stage, that you could poll even with Trump and Clinton in these polls? JOHNSON: I do and it wouldn't have anything to do with my debate performance. It would just be that people recognize that there's another choice. And that there would be an examination of me and Bill Weld as who we are and what we've done. But it got awkward real quick. JOHNSON: [muffled with tongue sticking out] I think I could stand up there for the whole debate and not say anything and emerge as the leader. His unusual antics confused MSNB's panel. HUNT: That's never happened to me in an interview before.
