Cliff Bleszinski

Clifford Michael Bleszinski (born February 12, 1975), popularly known as CliffyB, is an American video game designer, former design director for the game development company Epic Games, and the founder of Boss Key Productions. He is most famous for his role in the development of the Unreal franchise, especially 1999's Unreal Tournament, and the Gears of War franchise.

Career

His first commercial game was made at age 17: an independently developed point-and-click adventure game called The Palace of Deceit: Dragon's Plight. Bleszinski created the game while he was a student at Bonita High School in La Verne, California, and released it in 1991 via his own company, Game Syndicate Productions. He also sent a copy of the game to Tim Sweeney, the founder of Epic Games (then known as Epic MegaGames). Sweeney was impressed with the game and hired Bleszinski to work at Epic.

Designer Cliff Bleszinski was handed the reins to sequel, Unreal Warfare, which featured soldiers in mechs in an enclosed arena, but after several delays the title was rebuilt in the new Unreal Engine 3. As the game split from Unreal, Bleszinski also split from his wife in a messy divorce. He dove into depression and therefore games, finding new influences in Resident Evil 4 and Killswitch. His new game needed to be a tactical third-person shooter. Inspired by a recent trip to London, Bleszinski created a new IP about destroyed architectural beauty and a subtle metaphor for his divorced life, reborn dudebro, Marcus Fenix. After a few Eminem-inspired pushups in his hotel room, Bleszinski pitched Gears of War to Microsoft. Gears of War launched to universal acclaim, becoming Xbox's second billion dollar franchise but three sequels later, Epic faced two dilemmas: The budget for Gears 4 skyrocketed to 100 million dollars and Bleszinski just... kinda stopped coming to work. So after a Bleszinski buyout, Epic happily sold the IP to Microsoft. Microsoft assigned the Gears franchise to Black Tusk Studios and hired original Gears producer Rod Fergusson as studio head. The studio renamed itself the Coalition with the sole purpose of perpetuating the franchise, which can only mean one thing: They’re sinking more cities with a GIANT WORM! For this reason, the IP was sold to Microsoft because if Gears 4 was anything less than a smash hit, it would bankrupt the company. Head of the Coalition, Rod Fergusson has a tattoo of the Crimson Omen, the gear and skull logo from the Gears of War franchise, although rumors that he will be getting neck-reduction surgery like all the men in Gears of War are completely ridiculous. He does occasionally wear Marcus Fenix’s do-rag, however. The Berserker in Gears 1 is a Locust female chained down for breeding, a notion that designer Cliff Bleszinski recently admitted was "****** up" and he was in a dark place, presumably due to his messy divorce which inspired much of the game's development. For Gears of War 3, Epic sold two opposing t-shirts to determine the fate of Delta Squad Rookie, Clayton Carmine. Your purchase not only cast your vote to either "Save Carmine" or "Kill Carmine", but all proceeds went to the Child's Play charity. Oh and Carmine was saved in case anyone was worried he'd end up like Jason Todd. During the Era of Silence, humanity enjoyed peace, but as technology advanced, an energy crisis arose. Thankfully, Dr. Helen Cooper discovered the energy potential for abundant resource, Imulsion, using the Lightmass Process. So back to war it is! As nations fought in the Pendulum Wars, the Coalition of Ordered Governments covered up the fact Imulsion miners had become sick from exposure. A few secret experiments later, the Locust species was spawned because we needed something to shoot at. The Locusts settled in the Hollow beneath Sera, but some were further mutated by Imulsion, becoming the Lambent and beginning the Locust Civil War. Locust Queen Myrrah contacted scientist Adam Fenix to cure Lambency, but he was busy building the Hammer of Dawn to win the Pendulum Wars for the COG instead. Lambent numbers grew and Locusts were forced to invade the surface and kill millions of people on Emergence Day. Eventually, humans turned the Hammer of Dawn on the Locusts, destroying 90% of Sera's surface in a generic commentary on WMDs. Anyway, Adam Fenix discovered that Imulsion was in fact a parasite that would bring the planet to extinction! ...Probably. Activating the countermeasure he invented, he killed Locust, Lambent and anything infected by Imulsion, including himself. Dying, he urged his buff-n-stuff son, Marcus Fenix, to hang up his Lancer, leave the familiar faces and worn out places behind, and live a happier life. 25 years later, Sera is free of Imulsion but violent windstorms now plague the surface. Marcus has settled with Anya in one of COG's walled citadels, but his estranged son, J.D. and his pal Del were chased out for unknown reasons. After going AWOL on a classified mission, J.D. and Del befriend an outsider, Kait, and stumble on the hive of Sera's new dramatically convenient threat, the Swarm. Along the way, the Bat family grew, but after several defeats, the chaotic clown the Joker tore them apart. He injured Nightwing and kidnapped Tim Drake, the young Robin. Batgirl and Batman caught up with Joker, but he'd tortured Tim into becoming Joker Jr. Tim turned on and killed Joker in the ensuing fight, but the damage was done. In the aftermath, Nightwing retired from crime-fighting, Tim spent years in therapy, and Batgirl joined her father in the GCPD. Bruce continued protecting Gotham, never taking another protege. But after 30 years, Bruce's body showed its age. He supplemented his strength with upgraded tech, but a heart attack forced his retirement. Bruce hung up his cowl and became a reclusive shut-in. Without Bruce Wayne leading it, Wayne Enterprises merged with a corrupt conglomerate to become Wayne-Powers Enterprises. Crime in Gotham also bounced back and new Commissioner Barbara Gordon's in over her head. Though Joker's dead, local street gang the Jokerz carry on his chaotic work, but young hothead Terry McGinnis just interrupted one of their muggings. When the Jokerz murder his father, Terry must learn what happened to the Batman and convince that crusty old billionaire to train him as a new, totally schway Dark Knight. Initially unwelcome, Wan befriended the spirits until one day they stampeded as Raava and Vaatu battled. Wan intervened and, tricked by Vaatu's helplessness, severed Raava's hold. Gollop landed with Civilization publisher MicroProse, but MicroProse wanted something more ambitious, which at that time pretty much meant ALIENS, and that’s when they landed on a PC title about UFOs. Inspired by Bob Lazar's book on recovering alien tech at Area 51 and the UFO TV series, Gollop designed a mix of resource development and turn-based strategy into UFO: Enemy Unknown, but with only a four person team and no PC programming experience, their 18 month deadline passed quickly. Shareholder Spectrum Holobyte called for cancellation but Microprose simply chose to ignore them and never told Gollop, so his team continued to work on what was supposed to be a scrapped game. Secretly in development for 30 months, Spectrum Holobyte had no choice but to release the finished game. UFO: Enemy Unknown -- or XCOM in North America -- was a surprising hit, spawning four sequels but the franchise was then acquired by Hasbro. Hasbro's only XCOM title, Enforcer, was regarded as one of the worst spinoffs ever. XCOM bounced around for years in sales and mergers before landing at Firaxis Games. Long-time fan, Jake Solomon spearheaded his dream remake, but the dated combat system made a faithful remake difficult. After years of work, 2012's XCOM: Enemy Unknown released to critical acclaim, with XCOM 2 following in 2016. So cowboy up and experience some permadeath in one of the greatest franchises ever.
