NOTE: Today, on 1st of September, the day of anniversary of the outbreak of 2nd World War – which ended for long time the independent existence of Poland and started many decades of Polish national and cultural decline towards almost total annihilation during war and post-war years of the German-Soviet occupations - I’m presenting here the “Rota” (An Oath) - one of the most important songs ever written in Poland.
“Rota” is a Polish patriotic hymn, written in 1908 by a Polish poet Maria Konopnicka, to the music by composer Feliks Nowowiejski. It was created as Polish answer to the increasing Germanisation of Polish citizens under the Prussian rule in the 19th/20th century (in the time when – until the 1st World War – territory of the former Polish Kingdom was partitioned between three empires: Russia, Prussia and Austria).
“Rota” consists of four stanzas, written in the form of an oath formula, in which Polish nation promises God to keep its national identity and Catholic faith. Song was first made public by hundreds of choristers on 15th July 1910 during the unveiling of the Grunwald Monument in Kraków – the ceremony held on the 500th anniversary of the Polish victory over the Germans in the Battle of Grunwald of 1410. Combined choirs from across the whole of the former Polish state met on the Grunwaldzki Square in Kraków, to create a monumental national call for freedom, sung by thousands of throats, under the composer’s direction.
After Poland regained its independence in 1918, “Rota” was the first candidate to become the national anthem, to be replaced later by the “Dąbrowski Mazurka”. In the history of the 20th Century, “Rota” was sung on all situations when the extreme threat to the nation’s existence appeared. Therefore, it was often sung in public during the martial law in Poland in the 1980s: interestingly, the second verse "... Until the Teutonic onslaught/ falls apart into dirt and dust” was then replaced with "... Until the Soviet onslaught/ falls appart into dirt and dust”.
In 1991 “Rota” became the anthem in the Polish ethnic autonomous district, created as part of the Republic of Lithuania by the Poles living in territory of the former Polish Kingdom, which now is a part of Lithuania.

Eugeniusz MOSSAKOWSKI (1885-1958) Polish operatic singer, one of the best baritones in Europe in his generation. He sung in the Grand Theatre in Warsaw in years 1921-39, although his artistic career had been started by him in late years of his life, after he was 32 years old. After the 2nd World War, he withdrew from the artistic career and devoted himself entirely to teaching.

Varshavyanka 1905, que se traduce al castellano como "La varsoviana" (en polaco "Warszawianka 1905 roku" y en ruso "Варшавянка", Varchavianka), es una canción revolucionaria polaca escrita en 1893 y recuperada en 1897 por el poeta polaco Wacław Święcicki. Fue muy popular en Rusia en el período revolucionario de 1905 y 1917. No se conoce quien fue el compositor. Se denomina Varshavyanka 1905 para diferenciarla de una composición anterior llamada "Warszawianka 1831".
Wacław Święcicki escribió la letra de está canción en su celda del Pabellón X de la cárcel de la Ciudadela de Varsovia en 1879 condenado por sus actividades socialista. "Warszawianka" is a Polish song written some time between 1879 and 1883. The title, a deliberate reference to the earlier song by the same title, could be translated as either "the song of Warsaw" or "the lady of Warsaw". According to one version, Wacław Święcicki wrote the song in 1879 while serving a sentence in the Tenth Pavilion of the Warsaw Citadel for socialist activity. Another popular version has it written in 1883, immediately upon Święcicki's return from exile in Siberia. In any way, by the beginning of the next decade the song became one of the most popular revolutionary anthems in Russian-held Poland. The composer of the music is unknown.

Pierwszy raz tekst został wydrukowany 15 września 1883 roku w pierwszym numerze pisma „Proletariat”. Na ulicach zaśpiewano ją po raz pierwszy poza gronem socjalistów w marcu 1885 roku czasie demonstracji ulicznej w Warszawie. Pieśń swą nazwę zyskała podczas manifestacji pierwszomajowej 1905 roku, kiedy to stała się hymnem demonstrujących robotników.

The establishment of a Polish state can be traced back to 966, when Mieszko I, ruler of a territory roughly coextensive with that of present-day Poland, converted to Christianity. The Kingdom of Poland was founded in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a longstanding political association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin. This union formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest and most populous countries of 16th and 17th-century Europe. The Commonwealth ceased to exist in the years 1772–1795, when its territory was partitioned among Prussia, the Russian Empire, and Austria. Poland regained its independence (as the Second Polish Republic) at the end of World War I, in 1918.

Rota (An Oath), Polish national song – Eugeniusz Mossakowski, baryton Opery Warszawskiej z udz. Chóru W.Lachmana i orkiestry pod dyr. Bronisława Szulca [Baritone of the Warsaw Opera acc. By the W.Lachman’s Choir and the orchestra dir. by Bronisław Szulc] Syrena-Electro, 1931 (Polish) NOTE: Today, on 1st of September, the day of anniversary of the outbreak of 2nd World War – which ended for long time the independent existence of Poland and started many decades of Polish national and cultural decline towards almost total annihilation during war and post-war years of the German-Soviet occupations - I’m presenting here the “Rota” (An Oath) - one of the most important songs ever written in Poland. “Rota” is a Polish patriotic hymn, written in 1908 by a Polish poet Maria Konopnicka, to the music by composer Feliks Nowowiejski. It was created as Polish answer to the increasing Germanisation of Polish citizens under the Prussian rule in the 19th/20th century (in the time when – until the 1st World War – territory of the former Polish Kingdom was partitioned between three empires: Russia, Prussia and Austria). “Rota” consists of four stanzas, written in the form of an oath formula, in which Polish nation promises God to keep its national identity and Catholic faith. Song was first made public by hundreds of choristers on 15th July 1910 during the unveiling of the Grunwald Monument in Kraków – the ceremony held on the 500th anniversary of the Polish victory over the Germans in the Battle of Grunwald of 1410. Combined choirs from across the whole of the former Polish state met on the Grunwaldzki Square in Kraków, to create a monumental national call for freedom, sung by thousands of throats, under the composer’s direction. After Poland regained its independence in 1918, “Rota” was the first candidate to become the national anthem, to be replaced later by the “Dąbrowski Mazurka”. In the history of the 20th Century, “Rota” was sung on all situations when the extreme threat to the nation’s existence appeared. Therefore, it was often sung in public during the martial law in Poland in the 1980s: interestingly, the second verse "... Until the Teutonic onslaught/ falls apart into dirt and dust” was then replaced with "... Until the Soviet onslaught/ falls appart into dirt and dust”. In 1991 “Rota” became the anthem in the Polish ethnic autonomous district, created as part of the Republic of Lithuania by the Poles living in territory of the former Polish Kingdom, which now is a part of Lithuania. ------------------------ Eugeniusz MOSSAKOWSKI (1885-1958) Polish operatic singer, one of the best baritones in Europe in his generation. He sung in the Grand Theatre in Warsaw in years 1921-39, although his artistic career had been started by him in late years of his life, after he was 32 years old. After the 2nd World War, he withdrew from the artistic career and devoted himself entirely to teaching. -

NOTE: Today, on 1st of September, the day of anniversary of the outbreak of 2nd World War – which ended for long time the independent existence of Poland and started many decades of Polish national and cultural decline towards almost total annihilation during war and post-war years of the German-Soviet occupations - I’m presenting here the “Rota” (An Oath) - one of the most important songs ever written in Poland.
“Rota” is a Polish patriotic hymn, written in 1908 by a Polish poet Maria Konopnicka, to the music by composer Feliks Nowowiejski. It was created as Polish answer to the increasing Germanisation of Polish citizens under the Prussian rule in the 19th/20th century (in the time when – until the 1st World War – territory of the former Polish Kingdom was partitioned between three empires: Russia, Prussia and Austria).
“Rota” consists of four stanzas, written in the form of an oath formula, in which Polish nation promises God to keep its national identity and Catholic faith. Song was first made public by hundreds of choristers on 15th July 1910 during the unveiling of the Grunwald Monument in Kraków – the ceremony held on the 500th anniversary of the Polish victory over the Germans in the Battle of Grunwald of 1410. Combined choirs from across the whole of the former Polish state met on the Grunwaldzki Square in Kraków, to create a monumental national call for freedom, sung by thousands of throats, under the composer’s direction.
After Poland regained its independence in 1918, “Rota” was the first candidate to become the national anthem, to be replaced later by the “Dąbrowski Mazurka”. In the history of the 20th Century, “Rota” was sung on all situations when the extreme threat to the nation’s existence appeared. Therefore, it was often sung in public during the martial law in Poland in the 1980s: interestingly, the second verse "... Until the Teutonic onslaught/ falls apart into dirt and dust” was then replaced with "... Until the Soviet onslaught/ falls appart into dirt and dust”.
In 1991 “Rota” became the anthem in the Polish ethnic autonomous district, created as part of the Republic of Lithuania by the Poles living in territory of the former Polish Kingdom, which now is a part of Lithuania.

NOTE: Today, on 1st of September, the day of anniversary of the outbreak of 2nd World War – which ended for long time the independent existence of Poland and started many decades of Polish national and cultural decline towards almost total annihilation during war and post-war years of the German-Soviet occupations - I’m presenting here the “Rota” (An Oath) - one of the most important songs ever written in Poland.
“Rota” is a Polish patriotic hymn, written in 1908 by a Polish poet Maria Konopnicka, to the music by composer Feliks Nowowiejski. It was created as Polish answer to the increasing Germanisation of Polish citizens under the Prussian rule in the 19th/20th century (in the time when – until the 1st World War – territory of the former Polish Kingdom was partitioned between three empires: Russia, Prussia and Austria).
“Rota” consists of four stanzas, written in the form of an oath formula, in which Polish nation promises God to keep its national identity and Catholic faith. Song was first made public by hundreds of choristers on 15th July 1910 during the unveiling of the Grunwald Monument in Kraków – the ceremony held on the 500th anniversary of the Polish victory over the Germans in the Battle of Grunwald of 1410. Combined choirs from across the whole of the former Polish state met on the Grunwaldzki Square in Kraków, to create a monumental national call for freedom, sung by thousands of throats, under the composer’s direction.
After Poland regained its independence in 1918, “Rota” was the first candidate to become the national anthem, to be replaced later by the “Dąbrowski Mazurka”. In the history of the 20th Century, “Rota” was sung on all situations when the extreme threat to the nation’s existence appeared. Therefore, it was often sung in public during the martial law in Poland in the 1980s: interestingly, the second verse "... Until the Teutonic onslaught/ falls apart into dirt and dust” was then replaced with "... Until the Soviet onslaught/ falls appart into dirt and dust”.
In 1991 “Rota” became the anthem in the Polish ethnic autonomous district, created as part of the Republic of Lithuania by the Poles living in territory of the former Polish Kingdom, which now is a part of Lithuania.

Well hello and welcome to Warszawa. This week we are exploring the Polish capital. We've already been here a few days and it has been amazing. It has been such a pleasant surprise and unlike any part of Europe we've traveled in so far. So yeah, this week we're going to be highlighting 25 things to do around the city and we're excited to show you what it is all about.
We came to Warsaw with little to no expectations and the city completely surprised us. Our week in the capital was spent sampling Polish cuisine, learning about the city's past through museums and historical tours, and also dabbling in a bit of the nightlife. Warsaw is quickly rising through the ranks and we think it won't be long before travellers are flocking en masse. So if you're planning a trip to Poland, don't skip over the capital because there is more to Warsaw than meets the eye.

This was our first trip to Poland and we dove into the capital headfirst. While our travels may have started in the charming Old Town, it wasn't long before we discovered that Warsaw has a cool artsy side. We visited bright neon museums in the art district, shopped in boutiques selling soviet-chic apparel, and got to experience the capital's legendary nightlife. It many ways it was a whirlwind visit, but it was also a fun introduction that made us curious to discover more of Poland in our future travels. The following video will highlight 25 things to do in Warsaw and give you a glimpse into this up and coming capital.

Warsaw is a large and sprawling city of more than 1.7 million people that is split into somewhat uneven halves by the Wisła (Vistula) River. Most everything of interest to visitors is on the western side of the river around the modern financial district. Its centrepiece is the landmark Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), a Socialist-Realist confection which can be seen from virtually anywhere in the city.
The epicentre of Warsaw for visitors is the so-called Royal Route (Trakt Królewski), which runs north-south from the New and Old Towns, past the fashionable shops of Nowy Świat, the palaces that survived the war and the royal gardens of Łazienki Park, before reaching Wilanów Palace to the south of the city centre.
Warsaw's striking Old Town may look like it dates back several centuries but the old gal has barely reached middle age. The painstakingly rebuilt area was awarded a listing on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1980. Unmissable attractions in and around the Old Town include the Royal Castle, St John's Cathedral and the Citadel. Farther afield, make sure you visit the Warsaw Rising Museum for the story of the courageous men and women who rose up against their occupiers in WWII as well as the Palace of Culture and Science for the views.
No surprising for a city that was essentially rebuilt from the ground up after WWII, Warsaw offers an inordinate amount of green space, with leafy parks where rowing boats cruise past outdoor cafés, during the summer, and free classical concerts attract crowds in a scene far removed from the dull Communist-era images of Warsaw. And don't miss the palaces and other historical and cultural buildings in the city's splendid Łazienki and Wilanów Parks.
Warsaw's nightlife is one of the best in Eastern Europe today, with a multitude of bars and clubs scattered across the city as well as a generous dose of more highbrow entertainment such as classical music concerts and opera. Whatever you do, don't leave town without sampling the tipple of choice here in these parts: wódka (vodka). It comes in a myriad of flavours and hues - from myśliwska (`hunter's vodka'), which tastes a bit like gin, and wiśniówka (flavoured with cherries) to pieprzówka (pepper) and the famous żubrówka ('bison vodka'), which is flavoured with grass and favoured by the beasties in Bialowieza National Park). Poles traditionally drank vodka neat -- never in cocktails.
The dining options have improved no end in Warsaw, with international cuisine regularly featured alongside Polish standards. And Polish cuisine has also undergone some major transformations, lightening up old favourites with less fat and employing fresher ingredients.
