I had 144 kg of scrap aluminum wich I decided to melt down into lingots for future green sand casting. The aluminum was checked for magnesium with vinegar. Sorted in I.- cast aluminum, II.- aluminum pipe, sheet, wire and other. Everything was melted using waste oil burner. It took me two days to melt everything.

An amazing sculpture is made by pouring molten aluminum into a fire ant colony. The resulting cast is huge, weighing 17.9 lbs. and reaching a depth of 18 inches.
This is the full casting video which was recently shown in part on the Science Channel show Outrageous Acts of Science (Season 3, Episode 4 "Born to Be Wild").

These are the red imported fire ants (RIFA) which are harmful to the environment and their nests are exterminated by the millions in the United States using poisons, gasoline and fire, boiling water, and very rarely molten aluminum.
From Wikipedia: "Researchers have also been experimenting with extreme temperature change to exterminate RIFAs [red imported fire ants], such as injecting liquid nitrogen or pressurized steam into RIFA nests. Besides using hot steam, pouring boiling water into ant mounds has been found effective in exterminating their nests."

I packed a fishtank completely full of water balls (water beads, water balz, orbeez, spitballs...). Im guessing there are over 10,000 in there!
Anyway, I melted a bunch of old aluminum pipes and poured them into the fishtank hoping to create a cool design. And it worked perfectly! These are really unique, no two pieces are alike.

I wanted to cast a aluminum bat since I started thinking about metal casting, and now that I have all the necessary tools and materials I can do exactly that. Because of the big flask I used sodium silicate bonded sand instead of using green sand. I made a huge mistake by making the grooves on the handle recesses, that created a weak spot in the handle and that's where the bat failed. I'll have to fix the pattern.

Aluminium
Aluminium (or aluminum; see different endings) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery-white, soft, nonmagnetic, ductile metal. I had 144 kg of scrap aluminum wich I decided to melt down into lingots for future green sand casting. The aluminum was checked for magnesium with vinegar. Sorted in I.- cast aluminum, II.- aluminum pipe, sheet, wire and other. Everything was melted using waste oil burner. It took me two days to melt everything.

An amazing sculpture is made by pouring molten aluminum into a fire ant colony. The resulting cast is huge, weighing 17.9 lbs. and reaching a depth of 18 inches.

These are the red imported fire ants (RIFA) which are harmful to the environment and their nests are exterminated by the millions in the United States using poisons, gasoline and fire, boiling water, and very rarely molten aluminum.
From Wikipedia: "Researchers have also been experimenting with extreme temperature change to exterminate RIFAs [red imported fire ants], such as injecting liquid nitrogen or pressurized steam into RIFA nests. Besides using hot steam, pouring boiling water into ant mounds has been found effective in exterminating their nests."

I packed a fishtank completely full of water balls (water beads, water balz, orbeez, spitballs...). Im guessing there are over 10,000 in there!
Anyway, I melted a bunch of old aluminum pipes and poured them into the fishtank hoping to create a cool design. And it worked perfectly! These are really unique, no two pieces are alike.

I wanted to cast a aluminum bat since I started thinking about metal casting, and now that I have all the necessary tools and materials I can do exactly that. Because of the big flask I used sodium silicate bonded sand instead of using green sand. I made a huge mistake by making the grooves on the handle recesses, that created a weak spot in the handle and that's where the bat failed. I'll have to fix the pattern.
