Shan State (ရှမ်းပြည်နယ်, pronounced: [ʃáɴ pjìnɛ̀]; Shan: မိူင်းတႆး [mə́ŋ.táj]; Thai: รัฐฉาน) is a state of Myanmar. Shan State borders China to the north, Laos to the east, and Thailand to the south, and five administrative divisions of Burma in the west. Largest of the 14 administrative divisions by land area, Shan State covers 155,800 km², almost a quarter of the total area of Burma. The state gets its name from the Shan people, one of several ethnic groups that inhabit the area. Shan State is largely rural, with only three cities of significant size: Lashio, Kengtung, and the capital, Taunggyi. Taungyyi is 150.7 km north east of the nation's capital Naypyitaw.
Shan State, with many ethnic groups, is home to several armed ethnic armies. While the military government has signed ceasefire agreements with most groups, vast areas of the state, especially those east of the Thanlwin river, remain outside the central government's control, and in recent years have come under heavy ethnic-Chinese economic and political influence. Other areas are under the control of military groups such as the Shan State Army.

The Shan State in North-eastern Burma is horribly oppressed under the violent Myanmar military junta. In reaction, the Shan people have formed the SSA, or Shan State Army to defend themselves against some truly despicable acts. This hour long documentary charts the history and plight of a wonderful Shan people and culture. I highly recommend watching this all the way through. I cannot take credit for this work as I am not the filmmaker who created this. I am unsure who to credit since this was copied off of a VCD I brought back from the border area of Northern Thailand. Please excuse the digital glitches, this seems to have been passed thorough many iterations before being uploaded.

Shan (Muang Tai) State is the largest state in Myanmar, situated in the northeast of the country. The Shan people actually call themselves Tai or Dai. Lao people call them Tai Shan or Dai Shan, Thai people in Thailand refer them as Tai Yai ( Big Thai) and the Shan call their land "Muang Tai" rather than Shan State. Anyway...Enjoy the"Tai Shan" music. Does it sound like Lao language?

Travel video about destination Shan State Express in Myanmar. The Shan State Express is the sonorous name of a unique train that travels to the north of Myanmar and to the legendary kingdom of the Shan. It passes through some of the most splendid scenery in South East Asia. We begin in the famous city of Mandalay that has a population of around a million and is a centre of Burmese art. Mandalay was founded around one hundred and fifty years ago and is therefore a relatively young metropolis. It owes its existence to an outstanding monarch, King Mindon who, wishing to escape from his kingdom’s turbulent past, had a brand new royal city built. The journey on the Shan State Express begins early in the morning in Mandalay Train Station. Immediately after leaving the city we encounter wonderful...
Travel video about destination Shan State in Myanmar. North of Burma’s central plains is the exotic and fascinating Shan State, a beautiful landscape in South East Asia located on the eastern side ofMyanmar. Once 40 Shan monarchs ruled there but they lived in hostile times as Burmese kings and Chinese warlords fought against them to gain control of their fertile land.We begin our journey at Inle Lake. The magical beauty of this body of water has attracted and fascinated people since time immemorial and this unique lake is home to the Intha people. The next leg of the journey leads to a far more tranquil section of the lake that features floating gardens that are around a hundred metres long and two metres wide and consist of a densely interwoven carpet of water hyancinths. Mandalay, ‘The C...

Myanmar is a land of golden pagodas in which rivers, paddy fields and Buddhism dominate the lives of this country’s people who are made up of a variety of ethnic groups. But behind the bamboo curtain is a sleepy fairy tale land.Yangon is a river city and the capital of Myanmar. It is surrounded by India, China, Laos and Thailand. Few cities in Asia boast such a fascinating mêlée of tribes and cultures. A tranquil harmony of churches, pagodas, Hindu temples and mosques. Hsipaw: Hsipaw is a town in Shan State, Myanmar on the riverbank of Duthawadi River. It is 200 km (124 mi) northeast of Mandalay. Hsipaw is perhaps one of the most well known and powerful saopha states of Shan State. According to the biography of Sao Hearn Hkam (the chief wife, Madhidevi of Sao Shwe Thaik, the first president of Myanmar and another saopha of Hsenwi), Hsipaw, along with Kengtung and Yawnghwe were the wealthiest and most powerful saopha states in Shan State. The Saophas played fluctuating roles in regional Shan and national Burmese politics from the 11th century all the way till the 1962 military coup by General Ne Win. Hsipaw is famous for the Bowgoy Pagoda, situated in Bowgoy Village about 6 miles far from Hsipaw. You can take a trip to the beautiful palong(taann) nations ...

Throughout the area are the floating plantations of the Inthas on which tomatoes, cucumbers and beans are cultivated. A journey on the Sh...

Burmese Street food found in Shan state. There are three separate dishes in this recipe, they are all Shan dishes. It is hard to pick a favourite as they are all equally delicious. I am sure all the Shans will not be impressed by my ingredients as they are not authentic. This is the best I can do with the ingredients I get in the UK. My food critics, my family in my case, approves of my Shan dishes. Enjoy. Visit www.BurmesEasy.com

This is the last concert of Sai Thee Saeng, a Shan native of Langkher. This concert took place on 12 Feb, 2008, less than a month before his pass away on 10 Mar, 2008. He had entertained people of Burma, Shan State and many places in abroad for over four decades. More importantly, his last concert was performed among the Shan, in Shan State, his beloved motherland. We all Shan should proud of him.
