President Barack Obama praised the coexistence of “protest and love of country” on Saturday during the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, an occasion marked by reflections on the current racial tensions across the country.
“This is the place to understand how protest and love of country don’t merely coexist but inform each other, how men can proudly win the gold for their country but still insist on raising a black-gloved fist, how we can wear an ‘I can’t breathe’ T-shirt and still grieve for fallen police officers,” Obama said, addressing thousands of visitors who had gathered on the National Mall for the ribbon cutting ceremony, the culmination of a century of work aimed at commemorating the contributions of African Americans.
Obama wiped a tear from his cheek as he spoke about someday bringing a grandchild to tour National Mall, viewing the Lincoln Memorial as well as the new museum.
“It is in this embrace of truth, as best as we can know it, in the celebration of the entire American experience, where real patriotism lies,” Obama said, referencing part of President George W. Bush’s speech. “It is an act of patriotism to understand where we’ve been, and this museum tells the story of so many patriots.”

A museum (/mjuˈziːəm/; myoo-zee-um) is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and more local ones exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside. Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public. The goal of serving researchers is increasingly shifting to serving the general public.
Some of the most attended museums include the Louvre in Paris, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the British Museum in London, the National Gallery in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. There are many types of museums, including art museums, natural history museums, science museums, war museums and children's museums.

African Americans
African Americans (also referred to as Black Americans or Afro-Americans) are an ethnic group of Americans (citizens or residents of the United States) with total or partial ancestry from any of the Black racial groups of Africa. The term may also be used to include only those individuals who are descended from enslaved Africans. As a compound adjective the term is usually hyphenated as African-American.
African Americans constitute the third largest racial and ethnic group in the United States (after White Americans and Hispanic and Latino Americans). Most African Americans are of West and Central African descent and are descendants of enslaved blacks within the boundaries of the present United States. On average, African Americans are of 78 percent West African, 19 percent European and 3 percent Native American heritage, with very large variation between individuals. Immigrants from some African, Caribbean, Central American, and South American nations and their descendants may or may not also self-identify with the term.

President Barack Obama praised the coexistence of “protest and love of country” on Saturday during the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, an occasion marked by reflections on the current racial tensions across the country.
“This is the place to understand how protest and love of country don’t merely coexist but inform each other, how men can proudly win the gold for their country but still insist on raising a black-gloved fist, how we can wear an ‘I can’t breathe’ T-shirt and still grieve for fallen police officers,” Obama said, addressing thousands of visitors who had gathered on the National Mall for the ribbon cutting ceremony, the culmination of a century of work aimed at commemorating the contributions of African Americans.
Obama wiped a tear from his cheek as he spoke about someday bringing a grandchild to tour National Mall, viewing the Lincoln Memorial as well as the new museum.
“It is in this embrace of truth, as best as we can know it, in the celebration of the entire American experience, where real patriotism lies,” Obama said, referencing part of President George W. The distinctive elevated shape of the museum building is modeled after an old storehouse in the kurazukuri (蔵造り) style.
The Edo period (江戸時代/Edo jidai) or Tokugawa period (徳川時代/Tokugawa jidai) is the period between 1603 and 1868 in the history of Japan, when Japanese society was under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate and the country's 300 regional daimyo (大名).

Established in 1993, the Edo-Tokyo Museum displays the history of Tokyo during the Edo (江戸) period. The main features of the permanent exhibitions include a life-size replica of the Nihonbashi (日本橋, meaning Japan Bridge), which was the bridge leading into Edo; the Nakamuraza (中村座) theater; and scale models of towns and buildings from the Edo, Meiji (明治時代) and Shōwa (昭和時代) periods.
