(Sacramento) – At a state capitol news conference Assemblymember Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles), Assembly Speaker-elect Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) and Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis called on Exide and the state Department of Toxic Substance Control to act swiftly to restore the safety and quality of life for thousands of residents affected by toxic contamination from the Exide battery plan in Vernon. A Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) is a representative elected by the voters of an electoral district to the Legislature of a State in the Indian system of government. Each state has between seven to nine MLA for every Member of Parliament (MP) that it has in the Lok Sabha.Every state in India is divided in different constituencies and from each constituency a representative known as the Member of the Legislative Assembly MLA is elected by the people. All the MLAs from across the country meet at the Legislative Assembly to discuss on various issues.
The MLAs belong to various political parties and the party which wins more than half the number of constituencies in the respective state is the majority party. The party in majority is called the ruling party while all the other members are considered as opposition. The leader of the ruling party is elected by its members, who becomes the chief minister.
Once the chief and other minister are selected by the ruling party, the state governor appoints them to office, they are together responsible for working of the various government departments. The chief minister belongs to the executive sector of the government while the MLAs in the Legislative Assembly constitute the Legislature.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – As Assemblymember Rich Gordon (D-Menlo Park) neared his last day in the State Assembly (due to term limits), his fellow lawmakers paused the regular floor session to pay tribute to him as "the conscience of the Assembly.” Over the course of an hour, twelve Democrats and nine Republicans stood up to praise Assemblymember Gordon in a tribute that would have lasted longer but for time constraints. Legislators used the words integrity, respected, honest, professional, fair, civil and courteous to describe Assemblymember Gordon. Some of the newer legislators also praised Assemblymember Gordon for mentoring them with sage advice, saying they will ask themselves “What would Rich do?” as they continue in the Assembly and their lives. In June, Mayor Bill deBlasio signed Intro 775-A into law. The law imposes stricter deadlines on the Landmarks Preservation Commission and gives additional power to property owners. Many of the city's largest preservation groups claim it guts the landmark laws created in 1965 and fear it will make attaining landmark status extremely difficult. Conversion therapy – also known as reparative therapy or “sexual orientation change efforts" – aims to have people change their sexual orientation, thus "converting" from gay to straight. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, "conversion therapy has been discredited or highly criticized by virtually all major American medical, psychiatric, psychological and professional counseling organizations." Furthermore, conversion therapy is currently practiced in over 20 states, including New York (splcenter.org/conversion-therapy).
On this episode of "Represent NYC," New York State District 6 Assembly member Deborah Glick welcomes Barbara E. Warren, Psy. D, the Director of LGBT Programs and Policies in the Office for Diversity and Inclusion at Mount Sinai Health System (www.lgbthealthservices.org) and Jack Pula, MD, a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, to discuss a proposed bill she sponsored that would ban conversion therapy for minors.
