Ohio i/oʊˈhaɪ.oʊ/ is a state in the midwestern region of the United States. Ohio is the 34th largest by area, the 7th most populous, and the 10th most densely populated of the 50 United States. The state's capital and largest city is Columbus.
The state takes its name from the Ohio River. The name originated from the Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning "great river" or "large creek." Partitioned from the Northwest Territory, the state was admitted to the Union as the 17th state (and the first under the Northwest Ordinance) on March 1, 1803. Ohio is historically known as the "Buckeye State" (relating to the Ohio buckeye tree, and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes."
The government of Ohio is composed of the executive branch, led by the Governor; the legislative branch, which comprises the Ohio General Assembly; and the judicial branch, which is led by the state Supreme Court. Ohio occupies 16 seats in the United States House of Representatives. Ohio is known for its status as both a swing state and a bellwether in national elections. Six Presidents of the United States have been elected who had Ohio as their home state.
Sugarcreek is a village in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, United States. It includes the community formerly known as Shanesville. The population was 2,220 at the 2010 census. It is known as "The Little Switzerland of Ohio."
The village of Shanesville was founded in 1814 by Abraham Shane at the intersection of two Indian trails (currently Ohio State Routes 39 and 93). This village was surpassed in size and stature by Sugarcreek (then known as East Shanesville) when the railroads came in the mid-19th century. Shanesville was administratively merged with Sugarcreek in 1969, and took up the current name for the village.
Sugarcreek is located at 40°30′24″N 81°38′30″W / 40.50667°N 81.64167°W / 40.50667; -81.64167 (40.506637, -81.641728), along the South Fork of Sugar Creek.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.79 square miles (9.82 km2), all land.
The town has a notable Amish community which supports a tourism industry. In 2012, the town hopes to install one of the world's largest cuckoo clocks.
A cuckoo clock is a typically pendulum-regulated clock that strikes the hours with a sound like a common cuckoo's call and has an automaton cuckoo bird that moves with each note. Some move their wings, open/close the beak while leaning forward, whereas others only the bird's body is leaned forward. The mechanism to produce the cuckoo call has been in use since the middle of the 18th century and has remained almost without variation until the present.
It is unknown who invented it and where the first one was made. It is thought that much of its development and evolution was made in the Black Forest area in southwestern Germany (State of Baden-Württemberg), the region where the cuckoo clock was popularized. The cuckoo clocks were exported to the rest of the world from the mid 1850s on. Today, the cuckoo clock is one of the favourite souvenirs of travelers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. It has become a cultural icon of Germany.
The design of a cuckoo clock is now conventional. Most are made in the "traditional style" (also known as "carved") or "chalet" to hang on a wall. In the "traditional style" the wooden case is decorated with carved leaves and animals. They have an automaton of the bird that appears through a small trap door while the clock is striking. The bird is often made to move as the clock strikes, typically by means of an arm that lifts the back of the carving.

Seated in Amish Country ("Little Switzerland") - A restaurant named Alpine Alpa was built near Winesburg, Ohio by Hans and Alice Grossniklaus in 1935. He was a Swiss Cheesemaker. They decided to add attractions to their restaurant to increase the draw of local tourism. In 1972 they decided to have a cuckoo clock constructed.. Measuring 23 feet, 6 inches tall, 24 feet wide and 13 feet, 6 inches deep it's been called the World's Largest Cuckoo Clock and is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records. In August of 2007 the non-functioning clock was moved from the hill behind the restaurant to a new ground level location. One of the top attractions in Ohio's Amish Country is the scenery. The rolling hills, farms and Amish buggies help you remember that there are people in America who don't care to battle their way through the congested highways and lifestyles of big cities. Matter of fact, a stay in Amish Country - in particular at either of the Carlisle Inns in Sugarcreek or Walnut Creek - would do any big city dweller a lot of good. We constructed this HD photo show to play in the lobby of the Inns. Doyle Yoder's excellent photography made the job easy.
