Living in the time of the Industrial Revolution, Humboldt adapted the idea of romanticism, believing, that gathering knowledge on science will never be exhausted. He published his studies of the animal- and plant-kingdom and unique understanding of nature public in the book Cosmos, a corpus of his most important findings.

1799 startet der junge Alexander von Humboldt zu einer Reise ins Ungewisse. Er will zusammen mit seinem französischen Freund Aimé Bonpland den Orinoco im damals noch unerforschten Regenwald Südamerikas bereisen. Die Forscher kämpfen sich durch die grüne Hölle und sammeln biologische Erkenntnisse in einem Ausmaß, wie es noch nie einer Expedition gelungen ist.
Humboldt und Bonpland wollen nachweisen, dass es eine Verbindung zwischen dem Orinoco und dem Amazonassystem gibt. Die Genehmigung dazu holen sie sich von der spanischen Krone. Die Reise im Kanu ist abenteuerlich, strapaziös und voller Gefahren.
Vor allem durch seine guten Beziehungen zu den Indios dringt der vermessungs- und detailwütige Humboldt in zahllose unbekannte Sphären vor. Bis die kleine Reisegruppe nahe einer abgelegenen Handelsmission im Malariafieber steckenbleibt. Alexander von Humboldt wird bis heute als der erste große Naturforscher verehrt. Weltweit sind Gebirge, Meeresströmungen, Tiere und ganze Regionen nach ihm benannt. Jüngst hat Daniel Kehlmanns Roman-Bestseller "Die Vermessung der Welt" das Humboldt-Fieber neu entfacht. Der reisende Gelehrte des 18. Jahrhunderts gilt als der erste wirkliche Ökologe, als der erste Naturforscher, der die systematischen Zusammenhänge auf der Erde erkannte. Humboldt-Experte Frank Holl befasst sich seit Jahren mit den schriftlichen Hinterlassenschaften und den Exponaten Humboldts. Vor dem heute heftig diskutierten Klimawandel, so Holl, warnte Humboldt bereits vor 200 Jahren.

Ha pasado a la historia como el precursor de una forma universal de aproximación a la naturaleza, embrionaria de la actual ecología. "Wohin man rührt, er ist überall zu Hause", sagte Goethe über ihn. Es gab kaum eine Wissenschaft, in der Alexander von Humboldt nicht bewandert war. Die Welt war für ihn ein großes Ganzes, in dem alles mit allem zusammenhängt.
Alexander von Humboldt studierte Kameralistik, Botanik, Geologie, Mathematik, Fremdsprachen und viele andere Fächer. Im Jahr 1799 konnte er sich mit dem Erbe seiner Mutter einen Traum erfüllen: Er brach zu einer Reise nach Südamerika auf. Fünf Jahre lang reiste Humboldt durch das Gebiet der heutigen Staaten Venezuela, Kolumbien, Ecuador, Peru, Kuba, Mexiko und USA.
Die folgenden Jahrzehnte verbrachte er damit, die Dokumentation seiner Reise zu veröffentlichen. Am Ende waren es dreißig Bände mit rund 9.000 Seiten. Sie erfassten seine Reise in allen erdenklichen Disziplinen wie Botanik, Geografie, Klima- und Wetterforschung, Archäolgie, Mineralogie und Ökonomie. "Es ist ein glänzendes Gestirn im Reich des Geistes für diese Welt erloschen", hieß es in einer Trauerrede zum Tode des Universalgelehrten Humboldt im Jahr 1859.

Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. In North America, his name still graces four counties, thirteen towns, a river, parks, bays, lakes, and mountains. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, whether he was climbing the highest volcanoes in the world or racing through anthrax-infected Siberia or translating his research into bestselling publications that changed science and thinking. She has written for The New York Times, the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times. She appears regularly on radio and TV, and in 2014 copresented British Gardens in Time, a four-part series on BBC television.

Viaje por Nueva España (México) El 22 de marzo de 1803 llega con una fragata española de Guayaquil (Ecuador) a Acapulco, el puerto mexicano del Pacífico. Visita las cercanías y las describe en su diario, antes de proseguir su viaje el 29 de marzo por Chilpancingo y Taxco hasta la Ciudad de México (llegando el 12 de abril). En un México construido con las ruinas de la capital de los aztecas, Humboldt descifra el calendario azteca o Piedra del Sol que fue desenterrado en la Plaza Mayor, y hace varias excursiones en los alrededores.
Por ejemplo, visita las minas de Pachuca, Real del Monte, Morán y Guanajuato y los impresionantes alcantarillados de la ciudad en Huehuetoca. Además sube el 19 de septiembre de 1803 a la cumbre del Jorullo, emergido de las entrañas de la Tierra cuarenta y cuatro años antes en el estado de Michoacán. Sus historias sobre el volcán se difunden rápidamente en Europa y atraen numerosos aventureros que quieren experimentar por sí mismos lo que ha descrito Humboldt en sus textos. El Jorullo se volvió el volcán más conocido entre los científicos.
En enero de 1804 Humboldt regresa a la alcantarilla de Huehuetoca y escribe sobre su penosa construcción, lamenta sobre todo las inhumanas condiciones de trabajo para los indios. También se preocupa de las circunstancias en las minas coloniales, escribe un amplio informe sobre la mina de Guanajuato e intercede a favor de los trabajadores. Estuvo muy activo en la ciudad de México, planeó perfiles geológicos, atendió exámenes del Colegio de Minería y visitó varias instituciones y eruditos. Las condiciones en las cuales encontró los institutos, las describe modélicamente ante todo debido a que blancos e indios trabajan juntos ahí.
El 20 de enero de 1804 sale del centro cultural iberoamericano y va a Veracruz. Durante su viaje mide el Popocatépetl, el Iztaccíhuatl y escala el Cofre de Perote. La medición de los volcanes es una evidente prioridad de su viaje, en particular el Pico de Orizaba, que Humboldt midió sólo de lejos; esto tiene una importancia para los navegantes que se acercaban a la costa mexicana. Más estaciones en su camino son Puebla/Cholula y Xalapa. Después de su estancia en Veracruz (18 de febrero hasta el 7 de marzo) continúa su viaje por La Habana hacia los Estados Unidos.
En agosto de 1804 -- después de cinco años de viaje - Alexander de Humboldt regresa con su material científico a París y es recibido y celebrado por diez mil personas. Entusiasmó y cautivó a la gente con su curiosidad y su saber. El tiempo siguiente lo pasa en París analizando sus resultados, en 1807 se muda a esta ciudad. Luego apoya a varios científicos y artistas (entre ellos el matemático Karl-Friedrich Gauss y el músico Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy), y aconseja al joven Werner von Siemens con la fundación de su empresa. Los planes para su "segunda vocación en la vida", un viaje de investigación a Asia, son obstaculizados una y otra vez.

Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (
listen ; 14 September 1769 – 6 May 1859) was a Prussian geographer, naturalist, explorer, and influential proponent of romantic philosophy. He was the younger brother of the Prussian minister, philosopher, and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767–1835). Humboldt's quantitative work on botanical geography laid the foundation for the field of biogeography. Humboldt's advocacy of long-term systematic geophysical measurement laid the foundation for modern geomagnetic and meteorological monitoring.
Between 1799 and 1804, Humboldt travelled extensively in Latin America, exploring and describing it for the first time from a modern scientific point of view. His description of the journey was written up and published in an enormous set of volumes over 21 years. Humboldt was one of the first people to propose that the lands bordering the Atlantic Ocean were once joined (South America and Africa in particular). Humboldt resurrected the use of the word cosmos from the ancient Greek and assigned it to his multi-volume treatise, Kosmos, in which he sought to unify diverse branches of scientific knowledge and culture. This important work also motivated a holistic perception of the universe as one interacting entity.

The acclaimed author of 'Founding Gardeners' reveals the forgotten life of Alexander von Humboldt, the visionary German naturalist whose ideas changed the way we see the natural world—and in the process created modern environmentalism. Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. In North America, his name still graces four counties, thirteen towns, a river, parks, bays, lakes, and mountains. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, whether he was climbing the highest volcanoes in the world or racing through anthrax-infected Siberia or translating his research into bestselling publications that changed science and thinking. Among Humboldt’s most revolutionary ideas was a radical vision of nature, that it is a complex and interconnected global force that does not exist for the use of humankind alone. Now Andrea Wulf brings the man and his achievements back into focus: his daring expeditions and investigation of wild environments around the world and his discoveries of similarities between climate and vegetation zones on different continents. She also discusses his prediction of human-induced climate change, his remarkable ability to fashion poetic narrative out of scientific observation, and his relationships with iconic figures such as Simón Bolívar and Thomas Jefferson. Wulf examines how Humboldt’s writings inspired other naturalists and poets such as Darwin, Wordsworth, and Goethe, and she makes the compelling case that it was Humboldt’s influence that led John Muir to his ideas of natural preservation and that shaped Thoreau’s 'Walden'. With this brilliantly researched and compellingly written book, Andrea Wulf shows the myriad fundamental ways in which Humboldt created our understanding of the natural world, and she champions a renewed interest in this vital and lost player in environmental history and science. Andrea Wulf was born in India and moved to Germany as a child. She lives in London, where she trained as a design historian at the Royal College of Art. She is the author of Chasing Venus, Founding Gardeners, and The Brother Gardeners, which was long-listed for the Samuel Johnson Prize and awarded the American Horticultural Society Book Award. Viaje por Nueva España (México) El 22 de marzo de 1803 llega con una fragata española de Guayaquil (Ecuador) a Acapulco, el puerto mexicano del Pacífico. Visita las cercanías y las describe en su diario, antes de proseguir su viaje el 29 de marzo por Chilpancingo y Taxco hasta la Ciudad de México (llegando el 12 de abril). En un México construido con las ruinas de la capital de los aztecas, Humboldt descifra el calendario azteca o Piedra del Sol que fue desenterrado en la Plaza Mayor, y hace varias excursiones en los alrededores. Por ejemplo, visita las minas de Pachuca, Real del Monte, Morán y Guanajuato y los impresionantes alcantarillados de la ciudad en Huehuetoca. Además sube el 19 de septiembre de 1803 a la cumbre del Jorullo, emergido de las entrañas de la Tierra cuarenta y cuatro años antes en el estado de Michoacán. Sus historias sobre el volcán se difunden rápidamente en Europa y atraen numerosos aventureros que quieren experimentar por sí mismos lo que ha descrito Humboldt en sus textos. El Jorullo se volvió el volcán más conocido entre los científicos. En enero de 1804 Humboldt regresa a la alcantarilla de Huehuetoca y escribe sobre su penosa construcción, lamenta sobre todo las inhumanas condiciones de trabajo para los indios. El 20 de enero de 1804 sale del centro cultural iberoamericano y va a Veracruz. Durante su viaje mide el Popocatépetl, el Iztaccíhuatl y escala el Cofre de Perote. La medición de los volcanes es una evidente prioridad de su viaje, en particular el Pico de Orizaba, que Humboldt midió sólo de lejos; esto tiene una importancia para los navegantes que se acercaban a la costa mexicana. Más estaciones en su camino son Puebla/Cholula y Xalapa. Después de su estancia en Veracruz (18 de febrero hasta el 7 de marzo) continúa su viaje por La Habana hacia los Estados Unidos. En agosto de 1804 -- después de cinco años de viaje - Alexander de Humboldt regresa con su material científico a París y es recibido y celebrado por diez mil personas. Alexander von Humboldt studierte Kameralistik, Botanik, Geologie, Mathematik, Fremdsprachen und viele andere Fächer. Im Jahr 1799 konnte er sich mit dem Erbe seiner Mutter einen Traum erfüllen: Er brach zu einer Reise nach Südamerika auf. Fünf Jahre lang reiste Humboldt durch das Gebiet der heutigen Staaten Venezuela, Kolumbien, Ecuador, Peru, Kuba, Mexiko und USA.
Die folgenden Jahrzehnte verbrachte er damit, die Dokumentation seiner Reise zu veröffentlichen. Am Ende waren es dreißig Bände mit rund 9.000 Seiten. Sie erfassten seine Reise in allen erdenklichen Disziplinen wie Botanik, Geografie, Klima- und Wetterforschung, Archäolgie, Mineralogie und Ökonomie. "Es ist ein glänzendes Gestirn im Reich des Geistes für diese Welt erloschen", hieß es in einer Trauerrede zum Tode des Universalgelehrten Humboldt im Jahr 1859.

Viaje por Nueva España (México) El 22 de marzo de 1803 llega con una fragata española de Guayaquil (Ecuador) a Acapulco, el puerto mexicano del Pacífico. Visita las cercanías y las describe en su diario, antes de proseguir su viaje el 29 de marzo por Chilpancingo y Taxco hasta la Ciudad de México (llegando el 12 de abril). En un México construido con las ruinas de la capital de los aztecas, Humboldt descifra el calendario azteca o Piedra del Sol que fue desenterrado en la Plaza Mayor, y hace varias excursiones en los alrededores.
Por ejemplo, visita las minas de Pachuca, Real del Monte, Morán y Guanajuato y los impresionantes alcantarillados de la ciudad en Huehuetoca. Además sube el 19 de septiembre de 1803 a la cumbre del Jorullo, emergido de las entrañas de la Tierra cuarenta y cuatro años antes en el estado de Michoacán. Sus historias sobre el volcán se difunden rápidamente en Europa y atraen numerosos aventureros que quieren experimentar por sí mismos lo que ha descrito Humboldt en sus textos. El Jorullo se volvió el volcán más conocido entre los científicos.
En enero de 1804 Humboldt regresa a la alcantarilla de Huehuetoca y escribe sobre su penosa construcción, lamenta sobre todo las inhumanas condiciones de trabajo para los indios. También se preocupa de las circunstancias en las minas coloniales, escribe un amplio informe sobre la mina de Guanajuato e intercede a favor de los trabajadores. Estuvo muy activo en la ciudad de México, planeó perfiles geológicos, atendió exámenes del Colegio de Minería y visitó varias instituciones y eruditos. Las condiciones en las cuales encontró los institutos, las describe modélicamente ante todo debido a que blancos e indios trabajan juntos ahí.
El 20 de enero de 1804 sale del centro cultural iberoamericano y va a Veracruz. Durante su viaje mide el Popocatépetl, el Iztaccíhuatl y escala el Cofre de Perote. La medición de los volcanes es una evidente prioridad de su viaje, en particular el Pico de Orizaba, que Humboldt midió sólo de lejos; esto tiene una importancia para los navegantes que se acercaban a la costa mexicana. Más estaciones en su camino son Puebla/Cholula y Xalapa. Después de su estancia en Veracruz (18 de febrero hasta el 7 de marzo) continúa su viaje por La Habana hacia los Estados Unidos.
En agosto de 1804 -- después de cinco años de viaje - Alexander de Humboldt regresa con su material científico a París y es recibido y celebrado por diez mil personas. Entusiasmó y cautivó a la gente con su curiosidad y su saber. El tiempo siguiente lo pasa en París analizando sus resultados, en 1807 se muda a esta ciudad. Luego apoya a varios científicos y artistas (entre ellos el matemático Karl-Friedrich Gauss y el músico Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy), y aconseja al joven Werner von Siemens con la fundación de su empresa. Los planes para su "segunda vocación en la vida", un viaje de investigación a Asia, son obstaculizados una y otra vez.
Humboldt y Bonpland publican varias obras de manera conjunta, la más importante de las cuales es el Viaje a las regiones equinocciales del Nuevo Continente, aparecida en francés, en 13 volúmenes, entre 1816 y 1831.
