In 2004, Kyoto Jazz Massive arranged their 10th Anniversary celebration compilation. Monday Michiru's reinterpretation of KJM's hit "a calamaria" was published in that comp. This track is taken from the later 2CD (golden) issue of KMJ's 10th Anniv. I think the poem written by Monday. Another thing to note that, a slight horn
arrangement in this song was done by Monday's husband Alex Sipiagin.

Sailing
Sailing comprises wind propulsion of a craft by means of sails and steering it over water, ice or land, depending on the type of craft. A sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails by adjusting their angle with respect to the moving sailing craft and sometimes by adjusting the sail area. While there are still some places in the world where sail-powered passenger, fishing and trading vessels are used, these craft have become rarer as internal combustion engines have become economically viable in even the poorest and most remote areas. In most countries sailing is enjoyed as a recreational activity or as a sport. Recreational sailing or yachting can be divided into racing and cruising. Cruising can include extended offshore and ocean-crossing trips, coastal sailing within sight of land, and daysailing.

We go for a drive through the rainforests and check out the highest point on Langkawi. Most tourists aim straight for Langkawi's famous cable car "SkyCab". But that isn't the highest point on the island. In this episode we finally begin our new adventure in prehistoric Phangnga bay. Like a mini version of Halong Bay in Vietnam (but without the crowds) the northern part of Thailand's favourite cruising ground is littered with startling limestone karsts. Tunnels, funnels, channels and caves honeycomb these deserted islands, and if you choose your time carefully, you'll often be the only yacht there.
The area is like nowhere else we have visited from Turkey to Thailand, and we hope the footage will give you some idea of what we experienced. This is just the beginning...
As we hope the latest chapter in our story shows, sailing in Thailand is like nowhere else: the weather and sea state change hourly; in one morning, the unique topography morphs from white sand beach to vertical cliff; and as you look up from a swimming monitor lizard, Brahminy kites circle overhead, or perhaps bats hang from the roof in a pitch-black cave.

Marine monsters can take many forms, including sea dragons, sea serpents, or multi-armed beasts. They can be slimy or scaly and are often pictured threatening ships or spouting jets of water. The definition of a "monster" is subjective, and some sea monsters may have been based on scientifically accepted creatures such as whales and types of giant and colossal squid.

Likewise, DNA testing confirmed that an alleged sea monster washed up on Fortune Bay, Newfoundland in August 2001, was a sperm whale

Gunyan Raya takes around 20 minutes to ascend by car once you're off the main road. At the top is a look-out tower and secluded hotel.
Gunyan Raya has 360 degree views: North and east towards Thailand, south over the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and neighboring Pulau Tuba, west down the main channel from Bass Harbour and north west over to the Butang Islands. At such an altitude the temperature is noticely cooler and well worth the drive.
After our trip to Gunyan Raya we drive north east and head to Tanjan Rue. Here you'll find the Scarborough Fish and Chips restaurant, run by local man Dylan. Dylan spent six years living in Leeds in the UK, and every weekend would head to Britain's famous seaside resort, Scarborough... for fish and chips, of course. He returned to Langkawi and now runs this extremely popular restaurant whick offers some fantastic views of neighbouring Taratao Island and mainland Thailand. For some unknown reason, it always seems to rain whenever we visit.
As we head back to the marina we take in another little secret area in the south east corner of the island called Kampung Penarak. This is a tiny fishing village popular with local people. It has a beautiful beach and a few residents living by the shore.
We meet Anwar, a local man who rents a beach hut by the sea, next to a small piece of land he owns and is looking to sell for development.
Langkawi has three marinas: Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, Telaga and Rebak Island. RLYC is the closest to town and therefore the easiest from which to provision. During 2015 it is undergoing a major refit which means part of the club is now closed. For those staying there during the refit the workers are building a temporary dinghy dock. We bump into Azrin, the marina manager, who explains what's going on.
It's Saturday, and after scrubbing the decks we head into Kuah town to find those Morse cables. Multiquip is a well-stocked hardware store that covers most yacht-related bases. Since we're in town we check out the market.
Pantai Chenang is the most popular spot for tourists. Sadly over the three years we've been coming to visit its development seems to be getting out of hand. Small beach bars have closed down and land is being handed over to the corporate property developers. The main strip boasts all the usual restaurants and watering holes. Despite this, it's a great spot to watch the sunset and forget about boaty problems like leaking fuel pipes. Oh, sorry, didn't we mention that? What followtheboat video wouldn't be complete without continuing boat maintenance issues?

The highest point is a well-kept secret that you won't find in any of the travel brochures, and whilst the Sky Cab is tucked away on the north west corner of Langkawi, the highest peak is in the centre of the island and offers, in our opinion, the best views all round... Gunyan Raya takes around 20 minutes to ascend by car once you're off the main road. At the top is a look-out tower and secluded hotel.
Gunyan Raya has 360 degree views: North and east towards Thailand, south over the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and neighboring Pulau Tuba, west down the main channel from Bass Harbour and north west over to the Butang Islands. At such an altitude the temperature is noticely cooler and well worth the drive.
After our trip to Gunyan Raya we drive north east and head to Tanjan Rue. Here you'll find the Scarborough Fish and Chips restaurant, run by local man Dylan. Dylan spent six years living in Leeds in the UK, and every weekend would head to Britain's famous seaside resort, Scarborough... for fish and chips, of course. He returned to Langkawi and now runs this extremely popular restaurant whick offers some fantastic views of neighbouring Taratao Island and mainland Thailand. For some unknown reason, it always seems to rain whenever we visit.
As we head back to the marina we take in another little secret area in the south east corner of the island called Kampung Penarak. This is a tiny fishing village popular with local people. It has a beautiful beach and a few residents living by the shore.
We meet Anwar, a local man who rents a beach hut by the sea, next to a small piece of land he owns and is looking to sell for development.
Langkawi has three marinas: Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, Telaga and Rebak Island. RLYC is the closest to town and therefore the easiest from which to provision. During 2015 it is undergoing a major refit which means part of the club is now closed. For those staying there during the refit the workers are building a temporary dinghy dock. We bump into Azrin, the marina manager, who explains what's going on.
It's Saturday, and after scrubbing the decks we head into Kuah town to find those Morse cables. Multiquip is a well-stocked hardware store that covers most yacht-related bases. Since we're in town we check out the market.
Pantai Chenang is the most popular spot for tourists. Sadly over the three years we've been coming to visit its development seems to be getting out of hand. Small beach bars have closed down and land is being handed over to the corporate property developers. The main strip boasts all the usual restaurants and watering holes. Despite this, it's a great spot to watch the sunset and forget about boaty problems like leaking fuel pipes. Oh, sorry, didn't we mention that? What followtheboat video wouldn't be complete without continuing boat maintenance issues?

Just a century ago a voyage to the subantarctic islands was a journey into the unknown. Tales of archipelagos home to thriving seal and penguin colonies and surrounded by vast numbers of whales promised riches to those who dared head south. But getting there was an entirely different matter. Ships literally sailed off the edge off the map in their quest for profit. The ‘Roaring Forties’ and ‘Furious Fifty’ winds made the Southern Ocean a dangerous place to venture in small wooden craft, while the islands were often poorly mapped or non-existent. Today the region offers wealth of a different sort to scientists.
Yesterday, a team of five of us returned from a three week voyage to the Southern Ocean. Building on the scientific findings of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 2013-2014 (http://www.spiritofmawson.com/), we set out from the University of New South Wales to explore the changing climate and environment of the New Zealand subantarctic islands Campbell and Auckland. These biological hotspots straddle 50 to 52˚S, providing a precious opportunity to extend historical records back tens of thousands of years across a region that plays a major role in our planet’s climate. Setting out from the southern port of Bluff, Jonathan Palmer, Zoë Thomas, Mat Lipson, Pavla Fenwick and myself journeyed in the fifty-foot veteran of the Southern Ocean, the Tiama, with the irrepressible Captain Henk Haazen and First Mate Kali Kahn.
We explored numerous inlet and harbours, venturing far and wide as we searched for forests in the south, ancient trees in peat bogs and remnants of the last ice age along the peaks on the islands. While the subantarctics are better mapped today, it wasn’t all plain sailing. The Southern Ocean hasn’t mellowed with age while the wildlife – although protected today – were far from welcoming. During our expedition, we made a short film of our adventure, explaining the science and sharing our discoveries. We couldn’t resist showing you what it’s like to work in one of the most remote, wildest and beautiful places on our planet and share some of the humour on the voyage.
