Shopping at Namdaemun Market (남대문시장) in Seoul Korea | Life in Korea

In this travel video we visit the bustling Namdaemun Market located in the heart of the North side of Seoul. Known as the oldest continually operating market in all of Seoul and South Korea, its narrow alleys offer a glimpse into the past. One reason we were very excited to visit this market was to sample a wide variety of Korean street food. In fact, it's one of the top places in all of Seoul to sample the diverse kinds of Korean street stall food. After we had deep fried battered foods that included hot dogs, rice cakes, and lobster rolls. We stopped by a rice cookie stall where a talented Korean man showed us how he made the cookies from scratch using malt and rice flower. From all the walking around we did having this street food available was certainly a blessing. It's late fall in Korea and there were lots of Halloween costumes and masks on display. Although Halloween is not a traditional Korean holiday, it's certainly caught on with the children here. I think part of that has to do with the fact foreigner English teachers often celebrate it with the children in the classroom. The rest of the video shows us wandering through the crowds and some random events such as a Korean man wearing a green wig singing and performing with passion on the streets. We are at Namdaemun market today. It is the largest and oldest open air market in all of Korea. We are going to show you the different kinds of foods you can buy in this alley. That looks pretty appetizing - what do you have there? It sure does. Well, we found some food on a stick here. They are different kind of battered food objects. If you want to take a look. We've got what appears to be a rice cake, kind of a lobster roll and as we go down a bit we've got sort of like a hot dog or sausage thingamajig. This is our first snack of the day. It looks tasty - let's try it! Okay, I'm going to have the rice one. Very classy! Nice! Alright, you're up. What are you going to have? I'm going to take a bite out of the hot dog, so let's see. Scarf it! That is nice and spicy. Is it? This is really good. Yeah. You'll have to try this one too. Sexy undies. Sexy undies. It is almost Halloween and as you can see we have a little pumpkins. Look at what we've got up here. It's a spider! When I first met Sam he agreed to wear one of these for Halloween. Of course I did. Oh, yeah. How about right there. Nice and pink which is just my style. Hotteok. Alma-eh-oh. Cheon Won EE Eh yo. So we have got a delicious treat called Hotteok. It is a fried kind of sweet treat. Inside it is filled with cinnamon, honey and sugary kind of goodness. You bite into it and it is really warm. It is perfect for the fall or winter. I will take the first bite here. Oh yeah, that is good. We found ourselves a nice little back-alley to enjoy. To feast on the hotteok. It is delicious. Show us how it is done. It is hot. It is made of honey. It is called Malt. M A L T. Actually honey is liquid, right? With boil this for one week and make it solid because I have to show you my performance. That is corn flour. You make a hole like this. You stretch, stretch little by little. This store right behind us sells some medicinal herbs including ginseng. In a bottle. In here we have some interesting Korean style masks. They have various different exaggerated faces. One of them is happy. This one not so much.
