Kiribati (/ˌkɪrɪˈbæs/; KEER-ə-bahss or /ˌkɪrɪˈbɑːti/; KEER-ə-BAH-tee), officially the Republic of Kiribati (Gilbertese: Ribaberiki Kiribati), is an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. The nation comprises 33 atolls and reef islands and one raised coral island; Banaba. They have a total land area of 800 square kilometres (310 sq mi) and are dispersed over 3.5 million square kilometres (1,351,000 square miles). Their spread straddles the equator and the International Date Line, although the Date Line is indented to bring the Line Islands in the same day as the Kiribati Islands. The permanent population is just over 100,000 (2011), half of whom live on Tarawa Atoll.
Kiribati became independent from the United Kingdom in 1979. The capital and now most populated area, South Tarawa, consists of a number of islets, connected by a series of causeways. These comprise about half the area of Tarawa Atoll.
Kiribati is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the IMF and the World Bank, and became a full member of the United Nations in 1999.

Tomorrow, Kiribatis President, Anote Tong, is expected to make a plea to the international community gathered in Copenhagen, asking countries to reach a global pact to limit carbon emissions and help his country mitigate and adapt to the current threats of climate change. ISABEL, SOLOMON ISLANDS — A new study led by University of Queensland researchers says that changes in global climate and the subsequent sea level rise has already led to the loss of multiple Pacific islands. The team of Australian scientists, after sifting through decades worth of historical insight from locals as well as time series aerial and satellite imagery, say that Isabel, one of the main islands of the Solomon archipelago, has already lost five of its reef islands. These islands were once densely vegetated but weren't populated, reported the Washington Post. However, another six islands on Isabel have declined in area by more than 20 percent between 1947 and 2014. Meanwhile, residents of the island of Nuatambu have been forced to relocate to the nearby main island of Choiseul b...

Once again, Nauru has become a temporary home to hundreds of people seeking a new life in Australia. While the decision to send asylum seekers to the South Pacific island is in dispute locals hope it will provide a lifeline to the country. Nauru is just 21 square kilometres, and has a population of fewer than 10 thousand people. SBS correspondent Jeannette Francis travelled to Nauru to find that many local business owners believe the tiny economy will be revived by the influx of people. The Pacific island nation of Kiribati is leading efforts to establish a regional employment hub for technical and vocational employment opportunities in the region. The initiative, which is in line with Kiribati's "migration with dignity" policy for climate change, is aimed to address employment issues in Kiribati and other Pacific island countries. The country led initiative was introduced during the Smaller Islands States Leaders Meeting prior to the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting in the Marshall Islands in early September. In speaking to the media, President Tong says Kiribati has a huge population with a large proportion of young people, so unemployment is a big problem. The President expressed that Kiribati has to be realistic as the country does not have the economic ba...

Kiribati, the sinking Pacific island paradise VIDEO SOUTH TARAWA, Kiribati (Reuters) - The ocean laps against a protective seawall outside the maternity ward at Kiribati's Nawerewere Hospital, marshalling itself for another assault with the next king tide. Inside, a basic clinic is crowded with young mothers and newborn babies, the latest additions to a population boom that has risen as relentlessly as the sea in a deeply Christian outpost where family planning is still viewed with skepticism. It is a boom that threatens to overwhelm the tiny atoll of South Tarawa as quickly as the rising seas. Some 50,000 people, about half of Kiribati's total population, are already crammed onto a sand and coral strip measuring 16 sq km (6 sq miles). "Cli...
While a relatively new concept, the world has been living with the climate change process for quite some time. Over the span of years and decades, Pacific Islanders have grown more resilient, adapting to the slow, yet significant changes around them. With climate change posing a serious threat to the future of this island nation, the relocation of its people may be inevitable. A proactive approach is being taken to address environmental and health problems associated with over-crowding in urban centres across all sectors of society. Kiribati’s population is likely to double in size by 2025. This, combined with climatic issues like sea-level rise, loss of land and compromised food security, will cause many people to move and perhaps exacerbate the problem of urbanization and overcrowd...

English/Nat The President of Kiribati landed on Millennium Island on Thursday, as his people made final preparations to be among the first to usher in the third millennium. Teberuro Tito, who consolidated all of the islands of Kiribati into one time zone in 1994, is responsible for his nation's position as the doorkeepers of the century. Tonga, which adopted daylight saving time this year to try and share the New Year honors, is also holding a celebration. Kiribati's ceremony, however, is expected to be available to an audience of half the world's population through a broadcast coordinated by A-P-T-N. It's another beautiful day along the international dateline, as time edges ever closer to the historic changing of millenniums. Here on Millennium Island that moment will co...

A powerful cyclone hit the Pacific islands of Vanuatu, Kiribati and Tuvalu, destroying some homes and causing extensive damage. The Category 5 cyclone had average wind speeds of 155 mph to 167 mph, with gusts up to 211 mph, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Aid agencies are stepping up efforts to reach remote communities hit by Cyclone Pam which tore through the Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu. At least eight people are reported to have died and it is feared the toll could rise as news comes in from outlying islands. Thousands of people spent a second night in shelters after their homes were damaged or destroyed. Oxfam Australia said entire communities had been "blown away". The category five storm, with winds of up to 270km/h (170mph), veered off its expected course and struck populated areas on Friday night. Vanuatu's population of 267,000 is spread over 65 islands with about 47,000 people living in the capital, Port Vila. In a statement on Sunday, Oxfam Australia said up to 90% of housing in Port Vila had reportedly been seriously dam...

Kiribati Travel Guide: Curving its way above and below the equator, the Republic of Kiribati (pronounced 'Kiri-bas') encompasses the Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands, and was known under British rule as the Gilbert Islands. Measured by land size Kiribati is a tiny nation of just over 810 sq km, but its 33 atolls span a huge 3.5 million sq km of the Pacific. Most atolls surround turquoise lagoons and barely rise above the surrounding ocean, so it's rare to be out of the sight and sound of the sea. Kiribati's recent colonial and WWII history has had little impact on the outer islands, where the people subsist on coconuts, breadfruit and fish as they have done for centuries. Even on the main island, Tarawa, most locals live in traditional raised thatched huts. Western influence is increasin...

Kiribati is remote and tourism is very much in its infancy. However, after Kiribati changed the International Dateline to make its uninhabited Caroline Island the 'first to see the year 2000' (causing hefty arguments with neighbouring 'first-dawn' contenders Fiji and Tonga in the process), the country has moved further into the tourist spotlight. The islands boast superb white sandy beaches and crystal-clear lagoon waters. ********** This description is from WORLDTRAVELGUIDE. World Travel Guide own all copyright to this description. An assortment of videos and pictures taken with a GoPro Hero 3 Silver Edition on a recent school trip to Kiribati. Doesn't showcase so much the cultural and family side of Kiribati (which I discovered to be absolutely incredible) but more of the active and adventurous lifestyle. Watch in HD (highest quality, whatever you call it) for an enhanced experience, with the possibility of some first person action - no promises. Also contains images from when we were on the waterslide at Raffles Hotel in Nadi, Fiji. Shout out to Stacedog, sicko.
