Benjamin Francis Webster (March 27, 1909 – September 20, 1973) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. Webster, born in Kansas City, Missouri, is considered one of the three most important "swing tenors" along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. Known affectionately as The Brute, or Frog, he had a tough, raspy, and brutal tone on stomps (with growls), yet on ballads he played with warmth and sentiment. Stylistically he was indebted to alto star Johnny Hodges, who, he said, taught him to play his instrument.
Webster learned to play piano and violin at an early age before learning to play the saxophone, although he did return to the piano from time to time, even recording on the instrument occasionally. Once Budd Johnson showed him some basics on the saxophone, Webster began to play that instrument in the Young Family Band (which at the time included Lester Young). Kansas City at this point was a melting pot from which emerged some of the biggest names in 1930s jazz. Webster joined Bennie Moten's band in 1932, a grouping which also included Count Basie, Oran "Hot Lips" Page and Walter Page. This era was recreated in Robert Altman's film Kansas City.

With no cut longer than four and a half minutes, the players didn't have time for excess statements or overkill; they had to quickly get to the heart of the matter in their solos, make their points, and return to the head. The original session has been enlarged by the addition of two previously unissued tracks, plus an alternate version of "That's All" that was later...
Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster became friends when they played together in Duke Ellington's fabulous band of the early Forties. Here they show that their feeling of kinship hasn't gone away, nearly twenty years after Webster abruptly left the band. Anytime you put two of the Duke's hornmen together, you'll get magic. The first 12 tracks are from the 60's meeting. Besides tenor and alto, we have Lou Levy on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums. Tracks 13-17 has Ray Nance on trumpet, Lawrence Brown on trombone, Emil Richards on vibes, Russ Freeman on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass, Mel Lewis on drums, and arranged by Jimmy Hamilton, in Los Angeles, January 31, 1961. No one can play a ballard on the tenor sax like Ben Webster, so much from the heart, this is while he was in the UK in the 1960's, also a young Stan Tracy on piano. Spiritual jazz legend Charles Lloyd was given an honorary membership of the Ben Webster Foundation on Monday July 4 to coincide with his two sold-out nights at Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2016. Since its establishment in 1976, the Ben Webster Foundation has had a range of exceptional honorary members such as Benny Carter, Mercer Ellington, Harry Edison, Clark Terry, Yusef Lateef, Herluf Kamp Larsen and Sonny Rollins. Now, Charles Lloyd joins the foundation’s long list of honorary members. This took place at an event at iconic Montmartre, Ben Webster’s main musical outlet during his eight years in Denmark. Charles Lloyd accepted the honorary membership with joy and answered questions from the audience while reminiscing about his friendship with the great Webster himself. Special thanks to C...

Following my initial STS Digital Ben Webster experience, which was more interesting than outstanding. I decided the only sensible thing to do was to buy the 15ips version which promised to be a genuine 1:1 master copy. So I 'phoned Michael at Air Audio, the official STS-digitalshop UK distributor, and got out my credit card. This is completely different experience. Firstly, the packaging is first class. The hinged box is really nicely made from very stiff, cloth-textured card. It doesn't take up excessive shelf-space, looks great and provides good protection for the tape within. Although a spine label would be nice should I buy any more STS tapes! Another improvement since my first experience. Inside the box various stickers and notes state the equalisation is CCIR, level 320nWb/m and tha...
Maybe I'm old fashioned, feeling as I do
Maybe I am living in the past
But when I meet the right one
I know that I'll be true
My first love will be the last
When I fall in love it will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love
In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it began
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun
When I give my heart it will be completely
Or I'll never, never, never give my heart
And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
