The Rhine (Romansh: Rein, German: Rhein, French: Rhin, Dutch: Rijn) is a European river that begins in the Swiss canton of Graubünden in the southeastern Swiss Alps, forms part of the Swiss-Austrian, Swiss-Liechtenstein border, Swiss-German and then the Franco-German border, then flows through the Rhineland and eventually empties into the North Sea in the Netherlands. It is the second-longest river in Central and Western Europe (after the Danube), at about 1,230 km (760 mi), with an average discharge of about 2,900 m3/s (100,000 cu ft/s).
The Rhine and the Danube formed most of the northern inland frontier of the Roman Empire and, since those days, the Rhine has been a vital and navigable waterway carrying trade and goods deep inland. The many castles and fortifications along the Rhine testify to its importance as a waterway in the Holy Roman Empire. In the modern era, it has become a symbol of German nationalism.
The variant forms of the name of the Rhine in modern languages are all derived from the Gaulish name Rēnos, which was adapted in Roman-era geography (1st century BC) as Greek Ῥῆνος (Rhēnos), Latin Rhenus. The spelling with Rh- in English Rhine as well as in German Rhein and French Rhin is due to the influence of Greek orthography, while the vocalisation -i- is due to the Proto-Germanic adoption of the Gaulish name as *Rīnaz, via Old Frankish giving Old English Rín,Old High German Rīn, Dutch Rijn (formerly also spelled Rhijn)). The diphthong in modern German Rhein (also adopted in Romansh Rein, Rain) is a Central German development of the early modern period, the Alemannic name Rī(n) retaining the older vocalism, as does Ripuarian Rhing, while Palatine has diphthongized Rhei, Rhoi. Spanish is with French in adopting the Germanic vocalism Rin-, while Italian, Occitan and Portuguese retain the Latin Ren-.

Genres: Thriller,Cruising the Rhine River, we dodge riverboat traffic and the legendary Lorelei. After climbing castles and descending into dungeons, we relax with Rhine wine. We tour Burg Eltz — a lived-in castle where the noble lady still puts out fresh flowers. Then we enter the walled town of Rothenburg for Germany's best wood carving, a vivid dose of medieval punishment, and a tour with the night watchman of the town's lamp-lit ramparts. © 2002 Rick Steves' Europe
Since ancient times, the Rhine has been one of the world's busiest rivers and major trading routes. Today, under the watchful eye of once-mighty castles, barges carrying thousand-ton loads and busy trains transport goods and tourists along the river. The Rhine Falls (Rheinfall in German) is the largest plain waterfall in Europe. The falls are located on the Upper Rhine between the municipalities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Laufen-Uhwiesen, near the town of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland, between the cantons of Schaffhausen and Zürich. They are 150 m (450 ft) wide and 23 m (75 ft) high. In the winter months, the average water flow is 250 m³/s, while in the summer, the average water flow is 700 m³/s. The highest flow ever measured was 1,250 m³/s in 1965; and the lowest, 95 m³/s in 1921. Video by costiflorea costiflorea1@yahoo.com

From the Middle Ages to the late eighteenth century, Koblenz was the residence of the powerful archbishops of Trier and in 1794 it was taken over by France and in 1815, by Prussia. Following the Rhine, our journey leads to Boppard where town houses, stately homes and churches form the romantic old town. After the invasion of the Alemanni, a city wall was built in order to protect what was a toll castle and today the town has developed into an attractive tourist destination s...

For this programme Time Team visited one of the biggest building sites in Europe to unearth a perfectly preserved Roman boat. The Team was invited by Dutch archaeologists to help rescue crucial evidence from a 35-metre-long barge that once transported goods along the Rhine. The river - the 'motorway of Roman Europe', as one of the Dutch experts described it - was the vital supply line between Roman Britain and the rest of the empire. This would be the last chance to investigate the boat before the bulldozers moved in. The boat itself would be preserved, but buried beneath a cycle route.
Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist of the band Over the Rhine came to the studio during their stay in Portland on their most recent tour. They performed this live mini-concert for Portland fans who were selected by The Portland Sessions, in a raffle, a few weeks prior. They even offered up an impromptu Q & A which can be found at the end of the video.

when will i learn to be alone
how can i learn to let go of you
everyone can see me
but i can't see myself
have you seen the key that
leads to me
'cause i need to find myself
i'm running out
i'm running out of time
to find myself
why do i suck at putting smiles on their faces
why am i only funny to myself
how come no one understands what i say
but i thought i didn't know myself
i hate everyone
only on certain days
i think you're all
annoyed by me
so i'll leave, and find myself
