Mario

Mario (Japanese: マリオ, Hepburn: Mario, [ma.ɽi.o]) (English /ˈmɑːrioʊ/; Italian: [ˈmaːrjo]) is a fictional character in the Mario video game franchise, created by Nintendo's Japanese video game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto. Serving as the company's mascot and the eponymous protagonist of the series, Mario has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation. Depicted as a short, pudgy, Italian plumber who resides in the Mushroom Kingdom, his adventures generally center upon rescuing Princess Peach from the Koopa villain Bowser. His younger brother is Luigi.

The Mario franchise is the best-selling video game franchise of all time. Over 210 million units of the overall Mario series of games have been sold. Outside of the Super Mario platform series, other Mario genres include the Mario Kart racing series, sports games such as the Mario Tennis and Mario Golf series, role-playing games such as Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario, and educational games such as Mario Is Missing! and Mario's Time Machine. The franchise has branched into several mediums, including television shows, film, comics and licensed merchandise. Since 1995, Mario has been voiced by Charles Martinet.

Mário Jorge

Mário Jorge da Silva Pinto Fernandes (born 24 July 1961), known as Mário Jorge, is a Portuguese retired footballer who played as a left midfielder.

Club career

Born in Ponta Delgada, Azores, Mário Jorge made his professional debuts at Sporting Clube de Portugal at the age of 18, playing one match in 1979–80 as the Lisbon club won the Primeira Liga championship. He would already be an important midfield unit as the team conquered it again two seasons later, the last for the following 18 years.

After only 12 games in 1988–89, Mário Jorge left Sporting and signed for fellow league side S.C. Beira-Mar, but returned to where he had come from at the end of the campaign, again being rarely played. He concluded his career in 1995 after stints with two other teams from the capital, C.F. Estrela da Amadora and G.D. Estoril Praia, both in the second level (he joined the latter after two years of inactivity).

International career

Mário Jorge gained nine caps for Portugal, seven of those coming after the 1986 FIFA World Cup following the defection of practically all of the national team squad due to the infamous Saltillo Affair. His debut, however, took place on 8 June 1983, when he featured the full 90 minutes in a 0–4 friendly loss against Brazil in Coimbra.

Jorge

Jorge (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈʒɔɾʒ(ɨ)], Spanish pronunciation: [ˈxorxe]) is a Spanish and Portuguese given name, equivalent to the English George. It is derived from the Greek γεωργός (georgos), meaning "farmer" or "earth-worker".

Jorge Andrade

Jorge Manuel Almeida Gomes de Andrade, OIH (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈʒɔɾʒ(ɨ) ɐ̃ˈdɾad(ɨ)]; born 9 April 1978) is a former Portuguese footballer who played as a central defender, and the current assistant manager of Atlético Clube de Portugal.

After playing two years with Porto he went on to represent Deportivo (which would be his main club – 169 official appearances in five seasons) and Juventus, appearing rarely for the latter due to injury.

Andrade gained more than 50 caps for Portugal, representing the nation in one World Cup and one European Championship and helping it finish second in Euro 2004.

Early years / Porto

Born in Lisbon, Andrade made his professional debuts with hometown club C.F. Estrela da Amadora in 1997, helping it to two consecutive eighth first division places.

He immediately caught the eye, and after that was on the move north to FC Porto, being the team's most used player in the 2001–02 UEFA Champions League by playing 12 times as it reached the second group phase in the competition.
