The Mayor of London is an elected politician who, along with the London Assembly of 25 members, is accountable for the strategic government of Greater London. Conservative Boris Johnson has held the position since 4 May 2008. The position was previously held by Ken Livingstone from the creation of the role on 4 May 2000 until his succession by Johnson.
The role, created in 2000 after the London devolution referendum, was the first directly elected mayor in the United Kingdom.
The Mayor of London is the mayor of the entirety of Greater London, including the City of London, for which there is also the ceremonial Lord Mayor of the City of London. Each London Borough also has a ceremonial mayor or, in Hackney, Lewisham, Newham or Tower Hamlets, an elected mayor.
The Greater London Council, the elected governance for Greater London, was abolished in 1986 following the Local Government Act 1985. Strategic functions were split off to various joint arrangements. Londoners voted in a referendum in 1998 to create new governance structures for Greater London. The directly elected Mayor of London was created by the Greater London Authority Act 1999 in 2000 as part of the reforms.
London i/ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. It was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London, a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The conurbation also covers two English counties: the small district of the City of London and the county of Greater London. The latter constitutes the vast majority of London, though historically it was split between Middlesex (a now abolished county), Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.

Recently elected Sadiq Khan is London’s first muslim Mayor. He pointed out that if Donald Trump becomes president he may not be able to visit the US. Missing the point, Trump offered to make an exception for him. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. "Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States, has suggested he would make an exception for London’s newly elected Muslim mayor, the New York Times reported. “There will always be exceptions,” the Times quoted the real estate billionaire and presumptive Republican nominee as saying when asked how his controversial proposal would apply to Sadiq Khan, the son of a Pakistani immigrant bus driver and a s...

The new Muslim Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has decided to ban "sexy" images of women in advertisements on public transport in London, England, UK. The ads in question are for Protein World, a company that sells nutritional supplements for pre and post workout routines. Their ads feature a very fit woman wearing a bikini, on a yellow background, with the words "Are You Beach Body Ready" close by and/or around her body. A petition to remove the ads on change.org was started and received over 17,000 signatures. Sadiq Khan capitulated to their wishes and removed the ads, stating that he has two young daughters and that he does not want them to be "pressured" as it relates to their body while on public transport. So he says. There is another side to this story that breaks away from what ...

Sadiq Khan Mayor of London First Speech
Labour’s Sadiq Khan has been elected as Mayor of London, the first Muslim to hold the position. He defeated Conservative rival candidate Zac Goldsmith in the battle to succeed Boris Johnson, who is standing down after eight years in office.
In Britain, Labour politician Sadiq Khan has been elected as the next Mayor of London, beating Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith. Voter turnout in the capital was about 46 percent this year. The British-Pakistani lawmaker was 9 points ahead of his Tory rival Goldsmith, who has been accused of running a racist and Islamophobic campaign against him. Khan has become the first directly elected Muslim mayor in a major European capital. His appointment ends 8 years of Tory rule in the city from Boris Johnson. However, he has faced a barrage of criticism from the Muslim community for his pro-Israeli policies, even promising to hold a festival celebrating Tel Aviv. Khan is now in charge of spending 17 billion pounds on the capital for policing, transport, planning and the environment for the ne...
In May, Khan won London’s mayoral election - and made history by becoming the first mayor of Muslim faith of a major Western capital. His victory was in the face of what had been, by most accounts, an acrimonious election characterized by divisive rhetoric over his background. Now that he is arguably the most powerful Muslim politician in the Western world, Khan is setting out his position on one of the biggest challenges cities around the world face - the breakdown of social integration. Join the Council on Global Affairs and Mayor Sadiq Khan on his first official visit to the United States.
Sadiq Khan said the rating system would be a world first and could prevent "further heartbreak and tragedy". Only those vehicles getting at least three stars out of five would be allowed into the capital. Currently, there are 35,000 HGVs on a zero rating. Nine cyclists and 66 pedestrians were killed in the capital last year, according to Transport for London. HGVs were involved in 23% of pedestrian fatalities over the last two years and 58% of cyclist deaths, the mayor's office said. Lorries account for just 4% of all miles driven in the capital. Should Mr Khan's proposals be implemented, lorries with poor sightlines would be banned by January 2020. But the mayor believes many lorries would be upgraded before the new restrictions come in. "I'm not prepared to stand by and let dan...

Towards the start of 2012, the Metropolitan Police decided to disband Operation Trident and remove its crucial murder investigation team. I was the Chair of Trident's Independent Advisory Group, no advanced warning was provided, instead, I was blocked from entry to New Scotland Yard despite having had regular access for over 10 years. The change occurred in the aftermath of the Mark Duggan shooting dead by Metropolitan Police Service and in the wake of both the Met's relatively new commissioner Bernard Hogan -and as a result of the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, stated manifesto promise to end the scourge of knife crime. As independent advisory group members we volunteered our time over a long period of time without even a thanks.from Bernard Hogan-Howe ,or the then Mayor of London
