AUTHOR'S NOTE: This video is meant to give a non-bias account of the events which unfolded when Columbus and his crew made contact with the people of the Caribbean. Of course, I was not able to fit everything into the video; I had to omit details, such as the fact that the Taino were not the only people that Columbus encountered (there were also the Ciguayo tribe and Carib cannibals). A second particular is that not all fault should lie directly on Columbus' shoulders. His crew of 1,200 for the second journey consisted partly of convicts and landless nobles, the worst type of people with which to build a settlement. Another fact is that Columbus grew up in societies (Genoa, then Portugal) that kept domestic slaves.
I have no political agenda for making this video. I am a student of history and I have tried to give an account of Columbus' journeys that is as close as we can possibly get to the truth.
I will I admit that I am not a fan of Columbus. I think he was cruel, even for his time. We cannot judge a 15th-century human from a 21st-century perspective; but even for the 15th century, he was an awful arbiter.

1492 marked the quincentenary of Columbus' discovery of America. Christopher Columbus is a beautiful and entertaining movie that recaptures the time when Columbus first rose to greatness, later to become one of history's greatest catalysts for his eventual discovery of America. Set in the 15th century, this movie depicts his marvellous adventures and dramatic life throughout both his childhood, as well as adulthood, until his eventual death. His great faith and courage is sure to inspire a large audience!

When you find out the actual facts of what Columbus did when he got to America, you’ll find one of the darkest chapters in American history. "Second, Columbus wasn't a hero. When he set foot on that sandy beach in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492, Columbus discovered that the islands were inhabited by friendly, peaceful people called the Lucayans, Taínos and Arawaks. Writing in his diary, Columbus said they were a handsome, smart and kind people. He noted that the gentle Arawaks were remarkable for their hospitality. "They offered to share with anyone and when you ask for something, they never say no," he said. The Arawaks had no weapons; their society had neither criminals, prisons nor prisoners. They were so kind-hearted that Columbus noted in his diary that on the day the Santa Maria was shipwrecked, the Arawaks labored for hours to save his crew and cargo. The native people were so honest that not one thing was missing.
Columbus was so impressed with the hard work of these gentle islanders, that he immediately seized their land for Spain and enslaved them to work in his brutal gold mines. Within only two years, 125,000 (half of the population) of the original natives on the island were dead.”*

Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus (/kəˈlʌmbəs/; Italian: Cristoforo Colombo; Spanish: Cristóbal Colón; Portuguese: Cristóvão Colombo; between 31 October 1450 and 30 October 1451 in Genoa – 20 May 1506 in Valladolid) was an Italian explorer, navigator, colonizer and citizen of the Republic of Genoa. Under the auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, he completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. Those voyages, and his efforts to establish permanent settlements on the island of Hispaniola, initiated the Spanish colonization of the New World.
In the context of emerging Western imperialism and economic competition between European kingdoms through the establishment of trade routes and colonies, Columbus's proposal to reach the East Indies by sailing westward eventually received the support of the Spanish Crown, which saw in it a chance to enter the spice trade with Asia through a new westward route. During his first voyage in 1492, instead of arriving at Japan as he had intended, Columbus reached the New World, landing on an island in the Bahamas archipelago that he named "San Salvador". Over the course of three more voyages, Columbus visited the Greater and Lesser Antilles, as well as the Caribbean coast of Venezuela and Central America, claiming all of it for the Crown of Castile.

Christopher Columbus
The epic mini-series tells the story of the legendary Italian-born explorer Diego de Geona Taino, later known as Christopher Columbus, from his birth in c.1450 Genoa, Italy, to his young adult years as an expert sailor and navigator who, with money funded from the monarchy of Spain, sailed to the unknown West to find Asia in 1492, and instead found a 'New World' of the modern day West Indies to South America, and then follows his later years in his 50's as a tired, ailing man whose dreams of exploration and discovery to which he passed onto his son, and other followers, just before his death in 1506.

A second particular is that not all fault should lie directly on Columbus' shoulders. His crew of 1,200 for the second journey consisted partly of convicts and landless nobles, the worst type of people with which to build a settlement. Another fact is that Columbus grew up in societies (Genoa, then Portugal) that kept domestic slaves.
I have no political agenda for making this video. I am a student of history and I have tried to give an account of Columbus' journeys that is as close as we can possibly get to the truth.
I will I admit that I am not a fan of Columbus. I think he was cruel, even for his time. We cannot judge a 15th-century human from a 21st-century perspective; but even for the 15th century, he was an awful arbiter.

When you find out the actual facts of what Columbus did when he got to America, you’ll find one of the darkest chapters in American history. "Second, Columbus wasn't a hero. When he set foot on that sandy beach in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492, Columbus discovered that the islands were inhabited by friendly, peaceful people called the Lucayans, Taínos and Arawaks. Writing in his diary, Columbus said they were a handsome, smart and kind people. He noted that the gentle Arawaks were remarkable for their hospitality. "They offered to share with anyone and when you ask for something, they never say no," he said. The Arawaks had no weapons; their society had neither criminals, prisons nor prisoners. They were so kind-hearted that Columbus noted in his diary that on the day the Santa Maria was shipwrecked, the Arawaks labored for hours to save his crew and cargo. The native people were so honest that not one thing was missing.
Columbus was so impressed with the hard work of these gentle islanders, that he immediately seized their land for Spain and enslaved them to work in his brutal gold mines. Within only two years, 125,000 (half of the population) of the original natives on the island were dead.”*

Dort heiratete er Felipa Perestrelo e Moniz, die 1480 auf Madeira den gemeinsamen Sohn Diego gebar. Durch das Studium nautischer Literatur und der Karten von Paolo Toscanelli kam er zu der Überzeugung, dass die Erde keine Scheibe, sondern eine Kugel sei. Deshalb müsse ein Weg in westlicher Richtung über das Wasser zu den Küsten Asiens führen. Das wollte Christoph Kolumbus beweisen. April 1492 unterzeichneten Vertrag beauftragten ihn Königine Isabella I. und König Ferdinand II. mit einer Entdeckungsreise und ernannten ihn nicht nur zum Großadmiral, sondern zugleich zum Vizekönig der "Neuen Welt". Am 3. August 1492 stach Christoph Kolumbus mit der Karracke "Santa Maria" sowie den Karavellen "Niña" und "Pinta" von Palos de la Frontera aus in See. Der Matrose Rodrigo da Triana auf der "Pinta" sichtete am 12. Oktober Land: Die Expedition traf auf eine Insel der Bahamas, die in der Sprache der einheimischen Indianer Guanahani hieß, der Christoph Kolumbus jedoch den Namen "San Salvador" gab.
Dort erblickten wir allsogleich nackte Eingeborene. Ich begab mich, begleitet von Martin Alonso Pinzón und dessen Bruder Vicente Yáñez, dem Kapitän der "Niña", an Bord eines mit Waffen versehenen Bootes an Land. Dort entfaltete ich die königliche Flagge. Ich rief die beiden Kapitäne und auch all die anderen, die an Land gegangen waren, ferner Rodrigo d'Escobedo, den Notar der Armada, und Rodrigo Sánchez von Segovia, zu mir und sagte ihnen, durch ihre persönliche Gegenwart als Augenzeugen davon Kenntnis zu nehmen, dass ich im Namen des Königs und der Königin von der genannten Insel Besitz ergreife. Am 6. Dezember ging Christoph Kolumbus auf einer weiteren Insel (Haiti) an Land. Er nannte sie "Hispaniola" und gründete dort eine spanische Kolonie.
Von Januar bis März 1493 kehrte Christoph Kolumbus nach Spanien zurück, und zwar in der Überzeugung, Indien erreicht zu haben, denn Paolo Toscanelli und er hatten die Entfernung zwischen Europa und Indien auf dem westlichen Seeweg deutlich unterschätzt und Kolumbus ahnte nicht, dass er auf diesem Weg einen Kontinent entdeckt hatte. (Genau genommen handelte es sich um eine Wiederentdeckung, denn die Wikinger waren bereits 500 Jahre vor Kolumbus nach Amerika gelangt.) Über die entdeckten Gebiete brach ein Streit zwischen Spanien und Portugal aus, der am 7. Juni 1494 im Vertrag von Tordesillas beigelegt wurde.
Bereits am 25. September 1493 segelte Christoph Kolumbus erneut nach Westen, diesmal mit 1500 Männern und siebzehn Schiffen. Als die Indianer auf Hispaniola gegen die inzwischen zerstrittenen Eroberer rebellierten, griff Kolumbus gewaltsam durch. Im Oktober 1495 traf eine königliche Untersuchungskommission in der Siedlung La Isabella auf Hispaniola ein. Kolumbus segelte daraufhin nach Spanien zurück, um sich vor Isabella und Ferdinand zu rechtfertigen.
Bis ans Lebensende glaubte Christoph Kolumbus, in Indien gewesen zu sein. Tatsächlich erreichte er bei seinen insgesamt vier Forschungsreisen die Bahamas, Kuba und Haiti (3. August 1492 – 15. März 1493), die Kleinen Antillen, Puerto Rico und Jamaika (25. September 1493 – 11. Juni 1496), die Orinoco-Mündung und Trinidad (30. Mai 1498 – 25. November 1500) und die Ostküsten von Honduras, Nicaragua und Costa Rica (9. oder 11. Mai 1502 – 25. November 1504).

Oktober Land: Die Expedition traf auf eine Insel der Bahamas, die in der Sprache der einheimischen Indianer Guanahani hieß, der Christoph Kolumbus jedoch den Namen "San Salvador" gab.
Dort erblickten wir allsogleich nackte Eingeborene. Ich begab mich, begleitet von Martin Alonso Pinzón und dessen Bruder Vicente Yáñez, dem Kapitän der "Niña", an Bord eines mit Waffen versehenen Bootes an Land. Dort entfaltete ich die königliche Flagge. Ich rief die beiden Kapitäne und auch all die anderen, die an Land gegangen waren, ferner Rodrigo d'Escobedo, den Notar der Armada, und Rodrigo Sánchez von Segovia, zu mir und sagte ihnen, durch ihre persönliche Gegenwart als Augenzeugen davon Kenntnis zu nehmen, dass ich im Namen des Königs und der Königin von der genannten Insel Besitz ergreife. Am 6. Dezember ging Christoph Kolumbus auf einer weiteren Insel (Haiti) an Land. Er nannte sie "Hispaniola" und gründete dort eine spanische Kolonie.
Von Januar bis März 1493 kehrte Christoph Kolumbus nach Spanien zurück, und zwar in der Überzeugung, Indien erreicht zu haben, denn Paolo Toscanelli und er hatten die Entfernung zwischen Europa und Indien auf dem westlichen Seeweg deutlich unterschätzt und Kolumbus ahnte nicht, dass er auf diesem Weg einen Kontinent entdeckt hatte. (Genau genommen handelte es sich um eine Wiederentdeckung, denn die Wikinger waren bereits 500 Jahre vor Kolumbus nach Amerika gelangt.) Über die entdeckten Gebiete brach ein Streit zwischen Spanien und Portugal aus, der am 7. Juni 1494 im Vertrag von Tordesillas beigelegt wurde.
Bereits am 25. September 1493 segelte Christoph Kolumbus erneut nach Westen, diesmal mit 1500 Männern und siebzehn Schiffen. Als die Indianer auf Hispaniola gegen die inzwischen zerstrittenen Eroberer rebellierten, griff Kolumbus gewaltsam durch. Im Oktober 1495 traf eine königliche Untersuchungskommission in der Siedlung La Isabella auf Hispaniola ein. Kolumbus segelte daraufhin nach Spanien zurück, um sich vor Isabella und Ferdinand zu rechtfertigen.
Bis ans Lebensende glaubte Christoph Kolumbus, in Indien gewesen zu sein. Tatsächlich erreichte er bei seinen insgesamt vier Forschungsreisen die Bahamas, Kuba und Haiti (3. August 1492 – 15. März 1493), die Kleinen Antillen, Puerto Rico und Jamaika (25. September 1493 – 11. Juni 1496), die Orinoco-Mündung und Trinidad (30. Mai 1498 – 25. November 1500) und die Ostküsten von Honduras, Nicaragua und Costa Rica (9. oder 11. Mai 1502 – 25. November 1504).

During his first voyage in 1492, instead of arriving at Japan as he had intended, Columbus reached the New World, landing on an island in the Bahamas archipelago that he named "San Salvador". Over the course of three more voyages, Columbus visited the Greater and Lesser Antilles, as well as the Caribbean coast of Venezuela and Central America, claiming all of it for the Crown of Castile.
Though Columbus was not the first European explorer to reach the Americas (having been preceded by the Norse expedition led by Leif Ericson in the 11th century[4][5]), his voyages led to the first lasting European contact with the Americas, inaugurating a period of European exploration, conquest, and colonization that lasted for several centuries. These voyages had, therefore, an enormous impact in the historical development of the modern Western world. Columbus spearheaded the transatlantic slave trade and has been accused by several historians of initiating the genocide of the Hispaniola natives. Columbus himself saw his accomplishments primarily in the light of spreading the Christian religion.[6]
Never admitting that he had reached a continent previously unknown to Europeans rather than the East Indies he had set out for, Columbus called the inhabitants of the lands he visited indios (Spanish for "Indians").[7][8][9] Columbus' strained relationship with the Spanish crown and its appointed colonial administrators in America led to his arrest and dismissal as governor of the settlements on the island of Hispaniola in 1500 and later to protracted litigation over the benefits which Columbus and his heirs claimed were owed to them by the crown.

Christopher Columbus (/kəˈlʌmbəs/; Italian: Cristoforo Colombo; Spanish: Cristóbal Colón; Portuguese: Cristóvão Colombo; born between 31 October 1450 and 30 October 1451, Genoa; died 20 May 1506, Valladolid) was an Italian explorer, navigator, colonizer and citizen of the Republic of Genoa. Under the auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, he completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. Those voyages, and his efforts to establish permanent settlements on the island of Hispaniola, initiated the Spanish colonization of the New World.
In the context of emerging Western imperialism and economic competition between European kingdoms through the establishment of trade routes and colonies, Columbus' proposal to reach the East Indies by sailing westward eventually received the support of the Spanish Crown, which saw in it a chance to enter the spice trade with Asia through a new westward route. During his first voyage in 1492, instead of arriving at Japan as he had intended, Columbus reached the New World, landing on an island in the Bahamas archipelago that he named "San Salvador". Over the course of three more voyages, Columbus visited the Greater and Lesser Antilles, as well as the Caribbean coast of Venezuela and Central America, claiming all of it for the Crown of Castile.
Though Columbus was not the first European explorer to reach the Americas (having been preceded by the Norse expedition led by Leif Ericson in the 11th century[4][5]), his voyages led to the first lasting European contact with the Americas, inaugurating a period of European exploration, conquest, and colonization that lasted for several centuries. These voyages had, therefore, an enormous impact in the historical development of the modern Western world. Columbus spearheaded the transatlantic slave trade and has been accused by several historians of initiating the genocide of the Hispaniola natives. Columbus himself saw his accomplishments primarily in the light of spreading the Christian religion.[6]
Never admitting that he had reached a continent previously unknown to Europeans rather than the East Indies he had set out for, Columbus called the inhabitants of the lands he visited indios (Spanish for "Indians").[7][8][9] Columbus' strained relationship with the Spanish crown and its appointed colonial administrators in America led to his arrest and dismissal as governor of the settlements on the island of Hispaniola in 1500 and later to protracted litigation over the benefits which Columbus and his heirs claimed were owed to them by the crown.

But America is not a pristine wilderness. It is an old continent, inhabited by a hundred million people. They live in complex urban societies that know little of each other. Some of them are expanding, others declining. On the Upper Mississippi River Valley is Cahokia, one of the continent's largest civilisations. From atop the Andes, the Inca rule a kingdom of six million. In the Amazon basin, the Beni people flourish. They have built a vast infrastructure of earthworks, orchards, canals and causeways. These peoples all have sophisticated agricultural techniques. They grow crops and domesticate animals unknown to the rest of the world.
Europe that same year is a very different place. The same numbers of people live here, in one tenth of the space. This continent is busy and crowded. Europe’s forests are cleared for agriculture and shipbuilding. Its rivers are fished empty and polluted. Cities are growing, competition is blossoming, and people are pushing their limits. There is a feeling that frontiers have been reached. Suddenly the crucial trade routes to the Orient fall in the hands of the Turks. The elite fears for its wealth. Their greed for more power, land and money drives European kings and queens. And it makes them reach for the horizon.
In 1492 Christopher Columbus leaves the port of Seville, driven by the vision of sailing west, to find the riches of the East. On October 12, 1492, Columbus lands on what he thinks are the shores of the Orient. But he is wrong. These are the shores of the Americas – the New World. He is about to spark an ecological revolution that will become known as The Columbian Exchange. After Columbus comes an endless wave of explorers, conquistadors and settlers, and African slaves, each of their ships a Noah's Ark, carrying Old World plants, animals - and disease. In the first 150 years of contact, entire civilizations are wiped out by ‘accidental biological warfare’. Imported animals such as pigs, cows, and horses spread throughout the land. European wheat and weeds conquer the continent. And they also take away, cutting down whole forests and depleting the bountiful fish supplies, just as they had done at home. Back in Europe, the introduction of New World plants revolutionizes agriculture and the diets of Old World nations.
