New Mexico (Spanish: Nuevo México [ˈnweβo ˈmexiko]; Navajo: Yootó Hahoodzo [jo:tó haho:dzo]) is a state located in the southwestern region of the United States. It was admitted to the union as the 47th state on January 6, 1912. It is usually considered one of the Mountain States. New Mexico is the fifth-most extensive, the 36th-most populous, and the sixth-least densely populated of the 50 United States.
Inhabited by indigenous peoples of the Americas for many centuries before European exploration, New Mexico was subsequently part of the Imperial Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain. Later, it was part of Mexico before becoming a U.S. territory and eventually a U.S. state. Among U.S. states, New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanics, including descendants of Spanish colonists who have lived in the area for more than 400 years. It also has the second-highest percentage of Native Americans after Alaska, and the fourth-highest total number of Native Americans after California, Oklahoma, and Arizona. The nations in the state consist of mostly Navajo, Pueblo, and Apache peoples. As a result, the demographics and culture of the state are unique for their strong Hispanic and Native American influences, both of which are reflected in the state flag. The scarlet and gold colors of the New Mexico flag are taken from the royal standards of Spain, along with the ancient sun symbol of the Zia, a Pueblo-related tribe.

It is New Mexico's flagship research institution, the largest post-secondary institution in the state in total enrollment across all campuses as of 2012, and one of the state's largest employers.
Founded in 1889, UNM offers bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degree programs in a wide variety of fields. Its Albuquerque campus currently encompasses over 600 acres (2.4 km²), and there are branch campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, Rio Rancho, Taos, and Los Lunas.Coordinates: 35°05′02″N 106°37′07″W / 35.08389°N 106.61861°W / 35.08389; -106.61861 UNM is categorized as an RU/VH Research University (very high research activity) in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, with three Nobel laureates affiliated or associated.
The University of New Mexico was founded on February 28, 1889, with the passage of House Bill No. 186 by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico; stipulating that "Said institution is hereby located at or near the town of Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo within two miles north of railroad avenue in said town, upon a tract of good high and dry land, of not less than twenty acres suitable for the purposes of such institution," and that it would be the state university when New Mexico became a state. Bernard Shandon Rodey, a judge of the territory of New Mexico, pushed for Albuquerque as the location of the University and was one of the authors of the statute that created UNM, earning him the title of "Father of the University." Two years later, Elias S. Stover became the first president of the University and the following year the University's first building, Hodgin Hall, opened.

Bandelier's human history extends back for over 10,000 years when nomadic hunter-gatherers followed migrating wildlife across the mesas and canyons. By 1150 CE Ancestral Pueblo people began to build more permanent settlements. Reminders of these past times are still evident in the park as are the strong ties of the modern Pueblo people. By 1550 the Ancestral Pueblo people had moved from their homes here to pueblos along the Rio Grande (Cochiti, San Felipe, San Ildefonso, Santa Clara, Santo Domingo). In the mid-1700's Spanish settlers with Spanish land grants made their homes in Frijoles Canyon. In 1880 Jose Montoya of Cochiti Pueblo brought Adolph F. A. Bandelier to Frijoles Canyon. Montoya offered to show Bandelier his people's ancestral homelands. In 1916 legislation to create Bandeli...

The Land of Enchantment still echos with voices from its colorful past. These voices speak especially clearly from the ghost towns, mining camps, and little-known places that populate New Mexico's landscape. New Mexico's story is rich with history, from the Ancient Puebloan Indians, to Spanish explorers, pioneers traveling along the Santa Fe Trail, and prospectors in the 19th century. These many folks left their "footprints," not only along the many old trails in the "Land of Enchantment," but also on the many ruins and ghost towns that remain. Cuchillo, established by ranchers and farmers in the 1850s, was named for a nearby creek and a local Apache chief, Cuchillo Negro (Black Knife). Midway between the mines at Chloride and Winston and the railroad at Engle, it flourished as a stag...
After breakfast at the Burrito Company, we visit Bandelier National Monument and admire the well-preserved pueblo cliff dwellings abandoned by the natives centuries ago. Then we drive to Taos and visit the main plaza, enjoy some wine tasting and settle in to the Taos Inn in the heart of town, easy walking distance to the attractions. The ski slopes in Taos offer trails for all levels, including our beginner attempts, which were so much fun we went back a second day.
The Jemez Mountain Trail twists through time and terrain, contrasting vermilion desert cliffs and snowy alpine peaks, 13 th century stone dwellings and the birth of the Atomic Age in nearly the same breath. Travelers may fish canyon waters at dawn, don snowshoes for a woodland trek, explore ancient Pueblo ruins and view elk crossing an immense volcanic caldera all in the same day.

Neddy Vigil, research professor in UNM's Department of Spanish and Portuguese and director of UNM's Language Learning Center, and Garland Bills, UNM professor emeritus of linguistics and of Spanish and Portuguese, discuss their book, "The Spanish Language of New Mexico and Southern Colorado," a linguistic atlas that delves into Spanish as it is spoken by the Hispanic population of New Mexico and southern Colorado. History shows the condition of New Mexican Spanish and what the future holds for its speakers. With two major dialect regions, one in the north and one in the south, detailed maps illustrate the geography of linguistic variation for the Spanish spoken in the region. Peter Conrad, PhD is the Harry Coplin Professor of Social Sciences and Professor of Sociology at Brandeis University. This lecture will consider the origins and consequences of the increased medicalization of society using specific examples. Computer graphics is a standard offering in almost every computer science and engineering program. For at least 30 years, instructors have been in agreement as to the fundamentals of the area. However, changes in hardware and software have led to major changes in how we teach computer graphics. I will discuss the three key changes (1) the use of standardized APIs starting with OpenGL (2) the effect of programmable shaders and (3) the changes we are now going through with the availability of WebGL, which allows us to integrate three-dimensional graphics with other Web technologies available in HTML5. I will show a variety of student work and, as time permits, some of our multi-projector dome projects. Edward Angel is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of New Mexico a...
October 31, 2014 The CSRC was pleased to welcome Felipe Gonzales, professor and associate chair in the department of sociology, University of New Mexico, to present the talk "POLÍTICA: The Forced Annexation and Political Incorporation of the Nuevomexicanos, 1821-1871." The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended a two-year war with Mexico, empowered the United States to annex the Mexican Department of New Mexico. Overnight, the 60-100,000 Spanish-speaking citizens of New Mexico were subordinated to the rule of a foreign nation. As scholars have recently stressed, the Nuevomexicanos were thrown into a condition of colonialism once their homeland was annexed, particularly as New Mexico would remain a federal territory for several decades to come. However, compared to classic inte...
New Mexico down on Central Avenue
Where the old highway goes running through
And all that I can do ,all that I can do
Is think of you
With someone new
I got a job waiting tables in the middle of the night
See the sunrise in my rear view mirror
Wake up to see the last of its light
But I don't mind, no I don't mind
Because that hot desert sun beating down on this side
of town
Well it ain't a pretty sight
A few old men and some young drunks they'll try to make
a pass
But I just have to look them straight in the eye
And I say please don't even ask
'Cause there's no one who, there's no one who
Can make my tired old life
Seem new and unused
I guess there's always gotta be someone out on the
highway
Laying down all that tar
And there's always gotta be someone serving up the
drinks
Down at the bar
But I don't want to be slaving my life away
If it's just to pay for all the things I never knew
quite how to say
Dirty old blackbird landed on my window sill
I didn't want him to leave so I sat there watching him
perfectly still
Until he finally flew, and when he finally flew
I asked him to cut a hole in the morning sky
